AVG suggestion

I use AVG 9 Free anti-virus protection. AVG is one of the applications CCleaner cleans. Unfortunately, AVG includes the scan and event logs in its cleaning. This may be deliberate or it may be a bug. As an AVG user I want to keep these logs. They show that AVG is working correctly. Also, the scan log can be expanded to provide further information in the event that a suspicious object is found. I suggest these logs be excluded from cleaning.

I never used avg, but i assume it's listed in applications right? if thats the case you have the ability to enable or disable it. whats the problem?

 

also logs dont show a program is working properly. a decent program shows it's working properly by it's UI.

 

But then again iv never read one log any AV or malware utility has made.

Simply, as ident says, that is your choice. Amongst other things CCleaner deletes logs and temporary files created by various applications. For AVG the logs are the things that CCleaner removes, so you can check the box to delete these logs, or uncheck the box to leave them alone.

Ident, marmite, thank you for your replies. I will continue to exclude AVG from cleaning and am happy to withdraw this suggestion or see the topic closed.

That isn't the case with all programs that may have hidden problems where only a log will reveal such information, for example the Event Viewer in Windows which is often the only clue to a program having issues if a program doesn't produce a stack dump log on their own. Antivirus is the same and can log errors that may be minor but not critical enough to alert the user.

 

Although I think CCleaner should possibly be pre-configured with some stuff already unticked like antivirus logs, etc., or put them under the Advanced section.

I like Andavari's suggestion. If AVG cleaning were unticked by default it would have been better for me.

 

When I wrote that AVG's logs show the program is working correctly I was being careless. It's impossible to know for sure that any program is working correctly. But the presence of logs gives me some comfort (and their absence when formerly they were produced daily was alarming.) The event log shows me that AVG has updated its knowledge of viruses within the last 24 hours. The scan log shows me the results of daily scanning, including actions taken against viruses and (as Andivari said) suspicious objects which I might attend to or ignore.
