Pow
I'd like to suggest the adding of the following to CCleaner: Removal of MSN connection logs These are turned on by default by MSN and even if you turn it off via the option, it seems that the option is just re-enabled (From what I've seen, anyway). The logs are located in: "C:\Documents and Settings\%User%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger" My current folder size is just on around 20MB and it was manually cleaned a week ago. There seems to be an option in the MSN option that cleans these, but it didn't work for me. Side Affects: I did notice after deleting the logs that MSN took a little longer to sign in - and it did take a few seconds longer than usual to fetch the contact list - but I do not think that warrants leaving hundreds of megabytes of unused logs sitting dormant. Removal of contact list back ups of back ups Yup, that's right. I'm sure its' common knowledge by now that your contacts are stored on your computer by MSN Live. I do not know why, however, that Microsoft decided it'd be a great idea to create backups of already made backups of your contact list. They are located in "C:\Documents and Settings\%User%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts". At the present moment in time, I have 4 'Stringed' folders that contain the backups, and two of my own email. I think that having TWO backups on different dates is stupid, and that the oldest one be removed. The logs in this folder are also HUGE, but I don't know what they are for. Side Affects: Removing the oldest back ups seemed to bare nothing in the way of adverse affects. The logs, I did not remove because I do not know what they do. If this idea is stupid, please just disregard my post. -Pow
Moderators DennisD Posted November 15, 2009 Moderators Share Posted November 15, 2009 Hi Pow, and welcome to Piriform. Nothing stupid about your post Pow. My daughter uses Messenger a lot, but we don't have a folder of connection logs for whatever reason. There are a couple of other Messenger cleaning routines in the winapp2.ini file available here: http://forum.piriform.com/index.php?showtopic=1110 The download is at the end of the first loooong post. Unzip the file into CCleaners Program Files folder, and see if it gets rid of any extra stuff. You can post back with your findings of course. Hope that helps. Disk4mat
Good info, thanks! This is what I have so far for Live Essentials... Pow
You can post back with your findings of course. After adding my own additions to Winapp2.ini, it automatically removed just over 150MB of space of excess logs and backups. That being said though, no two peoples strings contained in those folders are the same, so it's not globally doable without some sort of extended detection. Like maybe allowing adding parameters during scans, even though that would be annoying Sorry for wasting your time. -Pow
Moderators DennisD Posted November 15, 2009 Moderators Share Posted November 15, 2009 No time wasted at all Pow. I've just been digging into "Live Contacts", and have found 12 locations containing over 200mb of log files which may or may not be totally useless. For info, this is one of the locations: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\{<unique number>\DBStore\LogFiles Definitely a very useful thread, so thanks from me for posting your findings. Pow
[*Windows Live Messenger]LangSecRef=3022DetectFile=%ProgramFiles%\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exeDefault=TrueFileKey1=%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger|*.*|RECURSEFilekey2=%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger|*.txtFilekey3=%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\{YOUR UNIQUE STRING}\DBStore\LogFiles|*.*Filekey4=%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts\{YOUR UNIQUE STRING}\DBStore\Backup\new(2)|*.*|REMOVESELF Continue this with as many folders as you deem necessary. Please substitute {YOUR UNIQUE STRING} with your own Unique string. Sorry I couldn't be of further assistance or if this isn't allowed to be posted XD -Pow
