Cannot install new version CCleaner

Recommended Posts

Hi there~

A couple wks. ago when closing down for the night, as I was running CCleaner, it asked if I wanted to download the new version. I didn't have time and clicked "no". A few days later when I tried to download it, it wouldn't put the icon on my desktop.

I've since tried to get it several times with the same results. It goes through the motion of scaning for virus', etc. but there's no where I can find the icon.

Tonight I tried again and have spent the whole evening over this. I found the forum and finally, a post stating all the things to do if the install wouldn't work. I've done all the hints, including unstalling the old version, closing down and rebooting, but still have been unable to get my CCleaner back. :(

I'm late for bed now, but hope someone has a suggestion that might help and will check back tomorrow.

Thanks,

Click start -> All programs -> CCleaner -> and again CCleaner -> right click -> send to -> Desktop (shortcut)

This should give you a new shortcut.

And by the way: CCleaner is not scanning for viruses. CCleaner is cleaning other things but not viruses. You'll need an anti-malware program for that such as the free Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Or the free SUPERAntiSpyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion. However, since I had uninstalled CCleaner from my computer, it's not showing there as it's no longer in my computer.

I realize it's not for scanning viruses and such, but when anything starts to download on my computer, a box comes up with lines going across which states at the bottom, "Scanning for viruses." That's so nothing is picked up from whatever is about to download and won't PLACE a virus on my machine. Hope I'm saying this correctly, as I'm not real knowledgeable in techie terms. I call up CCleaner when I close down to clean out cookies, etc.

I hope someone is able to help me get it back. My husband did Paypal a good donation a few months ago and I feel comfortable knowing CCleaner is a good product to use so don't like being without it.

I wonder if CCleaner is going to a different location than you intend for some reason. Have you checked any other areas after the virus check is finished?

Maybe "My Documents".

Have you recently downloaded anything else to a location of your choosing other than the desktop? The CCleaner installer may have gone to that location, depending upon how you have your download options set.

Another thought. After downloading, and completion of the virus check, have you tried a search for the CCleaner installer?

The file you would be looking for with the latest version is "ccsetup224.exe" (without quotes).

What anti-malware program do you use? What is it's name? It could be a solution to turn off the program and quickly download and install CCleaner. And them re-enable the anti-malware program.

CCleaner is available from several download sites, so another suggestion could be to find another site. Try this link and download the last one on the page: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds

At times malware can sneak into the PC even if the anti-malware program is fully updated. Perhaps you should visit a couple of online scanners or run extra scans with a program such as the free Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware? Link: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

If it wont install, you just rename it. Call it something.com for example. Then update it and go for a full scan.

I have a feeling that the download process has been misunderstood in this case. It sounds to me like you are using Firefox and are seeing the "Downloads" box and the "scanning for viruses" when it is done downloading. If so open Firefox, go to "Tools" at the top of the window and then click on "Downloads". Once the "Downloads" window is open RIGHT click on the CCleaner download and choose "Open Containing Folder". Even if that folder is the desktop you should see your download for CCleaner there. If it is, just run the installer. Whatever folder that is you might want to make note of it and if that is not the folder you intend your downloads to go to then you can change it by going to Tools > Options > Main > Downloads in Firefox and change it to the folder you like, or change it to ask each time you download a file. Also for future reference, you do not have to uninstall CCleaner before installing the updated version, unless the program is truly corrupted.

Please let us know if this is the case for you.

First of all, thanks to all who have responded with such helpful suggestions. Second, please accept my apology for the delay in being able to return. It's canning/freezing season here and I've hardly had a minute to do anything else.

Vic, thank you. I do have Firefox and yes, the box said "scanning for viruses". I just tried your suggestion with calling up Tools, Downloads, etc. and it did show a symbol for what looked like CCleaner, along with a box saying it could contain corrupted files (or something similar) and did I want to continue. I clicked 'no', intending to come back to ask what I should do, and then when I opened it again to see what it said so I could tell you, clicked 'ok' by mistake. A page came up with 15 icons! I know I tried to get it many times over the past couple wks. I clicked on one with the number 224 (some had 223) and finally, I got the page for installing CCleaner again. Whew~!

DennisD, I was about to try your suggestion when I noticed Vic's post and thought I'd try it first.

ePost, thank you too. I have AVG, ZoneAlarm, AdAware, Spybot, and SpywareBlaster. I don't know about malware, but as soon as I can find a few minutes, will try your suggestion for Malwarebytes. My machine has been running very slow, but I have so many things in Favorites and many notepads, so contribute that to the problem. Also, thanks for the help with downloading the CCleaner, as it's sometimes confusing. It generally comes up with the one for Paypal, and since we've contributed twice, can't do it every time a new update is available, so I have to figure out which link to click.

Sorry to be so long, but one more thing: This forum is great, but I had trouble finding out where I posted later when I came back. There are so many different topics and pages. When I found it, I left it at the bottom in the tray. Is there an easy way to find the different topics or does it require staying here until you learn it all? Yikes ! I would enjoy having a little time to research some further information about CCleaner, so I can learn about the different settings.

Best Regards,

PS: I never did uninstall CCleaner before to do the updates, but this time, when I couldn't get the new update to work, found the forum and took the advice where someone had mentioned doing that.

I'm happy you sorted it, and to follow a particular topic you started, or are involved in, go to "My Controls" at the top of the page, select it and then select "Options\Email Settings" on the left.

You will see this section on the page.

I have this setting to give me a daily email with a text copy of all the threads I'm involved in, including a direct link to each one.

Hope that helps.
