Paint is imho very cool bit of software.
The early versions, clunky by today's standards, showed us that we could create art on our computer.
Got kids interested when nothing else did.

I'd just love to be a fly hidden on the wall in both the Piriform offices and Avast offices because other than their blog posts I don't see much more information being sent our way to the Piriform community.
It's been a good run on here since 2004, however hopefully some other privately owned and maintained cleaning software will blossom without a huge corporation behind it.
Yep, been a good run. Probably not over yet. I think and hope this forum will continue to thrive, and all the Piriform softwares also. This is probably not the end of "Like as we know it, Jim". The careful approach taken by the Piri team, and the fast performance of the softwares, hopefully guarantees that the whole community will be OK.
OK, shameless plug over. But I really believe that stuff.

out of curiosity, if VLC plays all known formats, why bother with other players?

Good question.
It's an old habit, started back in the days when you could be pretty sure that sooner or later some new version would crash or some great software would just disappear. The objective is to have alternatives on hand.
It has sort of become a hobby (not an obsession, I hope ), trying new softwares or new versions.
Also, I want to keep xp going as long as possible, so must maintain my own softwares and maintenance files.
Edit: Then too, some softwares are just cuter than others.

Hazelnut's post caused a minor flurry of software experimenting here.
I also tried a player called MPC-BE, or Media Player Classic - BE, it worked very well.
MPC-BE and MPC-HC seem very similar but I didn't try them very extensively. .
Both play all the popular file formats.
Both are available in a .zip or .7z file which you can just extract & run.
Also, there is a new version of VLC player, v-2.2.6, for x86 and x64, as well as a portable version at the portable apps site.
The 2.2.6 portable version seemed slower, but I didn't give it much of a trial.

There are new-ish portable versions of PDF-XChange Editor and PDF-XChange Viewer available.
I've used PDF-XChange for years on an as needed basis, but never have permanently installed it.
I tried the latest free portable editor, worked well and fast here on xp. Did not try the viewer.
The portable version has some good editing features, and of course some are available only in the paid for pro version.
Be careful, the installer from the author's site wants to install a toolbar, bur you can uncheck it.
The portables don't do that. Just unzip them to their own folder & run them.

Yep, there are some malwares that rename themselves, that was my first thought too.
There are also some "good guy" malware removers that do it also, but you would probably know if you're running one of those. .
So, +1 to mta's suggestion to get help from one of the malware removal sites listed in rule #10.
That's sort of a long & tedious process sometimes, but it will give you peace of mind to find out nothings wrong, or if it is, fix it.
Post back what you find out, if you can. Just for for information.

Not much action on your question.
I tried a search for the dll file names you listed and didn't find anything either.
Also searched for the CLSID, found nothing that looked promising.
One thing you might try is this. When CCleaner finds such an entry in the registry, right click on it and select Open in Regedit. This will open the registry editor to the key that CCleaner found. That might provide a clue about the software involved.
Good luck, post back what you find out if you can.

There is a some benefit to cleaning out window's leftover junk.
Ccleaner is a good cleaner software, but like any other it must be used carefully.
Read about how it works, take your time, and use it in little bits.
Make backups, etc, whenever prompted.

The porcine wrigglings of the tardigrade cannot compare to the elegant, gliding perambulation of the planaria.
As to toughness:
if you cut a tardigrade in half, he's done for. If you cut a flatworm in half, he becomes two flatworms.
And anyway, who wants to survive riding on the outside of a of rocket ship?

I suggest we start a poll to decide which is the superior animal.

Is it possible that the files really are just 80MB?
Were they part of an original larger file or package of files?
Then after something happened to require a recovery software, those 80MB files might have been all that was left.
Btw what did happen to those drives to mess them up? Knowing might help recover the files.

@uuu the problem isn't that ccleaner's registry is dangerous, now as opposed to past, it's that you're using it wrong. Please take time to read my signature, in it is golden advice for registry cleaning, in ccleaner or any other reg cleaner. This advice has kept me bug free windows xp and all windows through windows 10

Any registry editor can wreck your computer, not just recent ones and not just recent operating systems.
The easiest way I know to think of it is this: If you don't know exactly what a change will do, don't make the change.

Antivirus advice needed

Fwiw, I believe Avast is quite good.
I use an older version on xp, and don't let the one on win 7 update the program (new versions have some extra stuff I don't want) but I have always found Avast to be a good AV.
But I doubt the time will come when members are constrained from making their best recommendation. Sure hope not.
edit 18 August 17: Ahhh, well, I must have awakened the jinx. Avast update mechanism has gummed up completely. Been a while, no fix in sight yet.
