  1. And you don't have to feel guilty in any way at all. I've always maintained that there isn't any such thing as a daft question because that premise would put a lot of folk off asking for help. Daft answers? Definitely.

On a forum it pays to have a think about what it is exactly you want in way of help, and what information you think people will need to give you the best help they can. You're very new to this forum and maybe forums in general, so you'll learn as you go along.

You also need somewhat of a thick skin on a forum, because our written words don't always come across as we mean them, in which case you usually get some wag jumping on them. All in good fun of course.

Just my two penneth, and if you have any other questions, feel free.

    :)

Yeah...I'm probably new to forums....thought I might ask around here for help because it all started off with me accidentally wiping my HDD by just re-formatting it....then it gradually became....more friendly this place. So I thought I might ask more... :)

Does my answers to all those clear some confusion you all had?

  2. How old are you?

I fail to believe that a college aged person thought you could go into a potential employer and tell them what hours you expected to work. I doubt your going to get a job repairing computers without the proper certifications first. You should start out at a grocery store or something.

If you really want to know how old I am, I'm 18...maybe a bit over but not 19 yet. I'll be 19 in October :) Does the age factor make any difference to this discussion?

..well....of course that was what I was thinking....I haven't got a job yet....so from when I was born to now, I have not even got employed yet....but now that everyone else I know have one, I thought I might as well get one too - besides that could pay off my dream gaming PC...and stop bugging mum /dad to get it for me which of course will be a no anyways....who's gonna pay 4 or so grand for my gaming PC? No one except me of course but I don't have that kind of money yet. ^_^ It looked quite simple...but when when I first heard the process, it now sounds a bit more complicated then just walk in and grab your position and that's it. That's what first thought it was to get a job/career: Step one search up your job, step two go to where you want to work and just sign in and you got a job. As simple as two steps to getting a job or career as I had thought....I guess I'm wrong...

Well....I did talk to the staff counter over there, before I even started this topic...he said I didn't really need any qualifications to get a job at this shop be he did mentioned that if I had any retailing experience or playing around with computers will help. Since I've played around with computers a lot when I'm not gaming, I thought I might be able to get this....or not. but we'll see. I haven't done any retailing so...talking to customers would probably be a bad idea...I'd be best out the back doing the computer hands on practical help or something.

I thought by starting off at a computer shop might enhance my experience with using and maintaining computers at the same time. Grocery stores and the like, well I admit yes you get pad and get experience through that, but not really my preferred way of getting my first job....

I'm happy to carry on with any advice you might need, and your CV looks fine now.

    Oh good. :)

Don't worry about the negative comments (one in particular was a bit unnecessary), as you probably got a bit carried away with all the suggestions coming your way, especially mine as I thought you were looking to find yourself on the first stepping stone of a career, and if that was the case you do need to do things in a professional way.
Yeah...sorry for that if that helps. I admit I got carried away but I had so many questions to ask.... and I thought people here would be inclined to answer.... :(

I also thought that you were applying for an advertised position. Is that not the case?
Well...technically speaking, probably no...coz it's only my first anyway....and I don't have any qualifications yet, heck I just only started uni this year!! Straight from high school last year. I didn't know whether to get a gap year or straight to uni. If I had a gap year - I'd most likely be on my computer playing games, if not, I'd be at uni doing work and study instead. :) I chose to go to uni, coz a gap year would waste a year playing games...which I guess could help if I have not finish any games yet...I also sometimes make guides and edit already made guides to games...so that's my reason.
  3. Oh. Okay...would it make everyone feel better if I said I didn't say that even though I did, but I take it back? (at least have DennisD back to continue helping or anyone else who might...) :( I feel guilty now for saying that....

  4. I also want all my Game CD's done the same way. If they get scratched up or destroyed, 3 min later, new clone!
yeah with the DRM crap on your game CDs especially the ones where it asks you to insert the original disc to play or install, you'd won't be able to make it work like the original.... :):P-_- Well, there ain't a way to pass the DRM on game CDs if you want to back them up into ISO format. -_-
  5. You are being unrealistic if you think you will be able to get hours which suit your lifestyle. You just have to take what you can get if you want to earn money.

Part time jobs are often in the evening, or early morning and Saturdays and Sundays.

It's just a fact of working life.

Oh <_< - so they make the time and I either I have to accept it or not, right?:wacko: ....which includes full-time work too? :D I thought you could choose when...
  6. So, it's all good if I just walked up to the shop, flash out my CV to one of the shop clerk which is usually one behind the counter and say:

Me: "Hey...uhhhh....I got my CV with me, care to call out your store manager or your boss?"

    Staff: "sure."

Boss: "Hello there, I see another prospective liking my shop." [staff just stands there waiting for another customer to walk in]

    Me: "Yeah...."

Boss: "Well, got your CV with ya?"

Me: "Yeah, I do." [hands the CV to the boss]

Boss: "Hmmm....alright, go home and I'll give you a ring sometime for an interview."

Me: "Okay...." [i slowly walk backwards towards the exit]

Boss: "Cheers - have a nice day."

Me: "Yeah, you too" [Walks out in a happy mood, hoping the boss will call for that interview...]

Do you think above is how it's gonna play out? Or is there more to this? That's just only a simuation of what I think will happen when the next I walk in with my CV in my hand....

Okay, how's my CV this time: CV-2.png

ooo...font's different this time.... will it look like this version when it's printed out or the other?

    Alan_B

Yeah, of course I will be doing part time! for now till June....but after that, I wouldn't mind working the entire 5 day week (Monday to Friday) waking up at maybe 9 or 10am and come home at about 5PM or something....Thus leaving me free time during the non-working hours and the Saturday and Sunday too. Of course this will eventually go back to part time(if they allow it) because I will be back at uni next year....full year this time for three or so years.... ^_^ Probably won't have time for work then....

Hopefully by that time, I'd earn enough money to build my dream gaming PC.... ^_^ If not...I'll continue until I do....hopefully not after the end of 2014....

Do I really need covering letter too?:wacko:

  7. I no longer bother using the forum for pictures and instead use a free image hosting site. The main reason being non-members will never see the pictures hosted by the forum, and regular members have to be logged in to see them.

Yeah that happens....I guess I'll have to not worry about it for now. :)
  8. I see. <_< So once that's all used up, I cannot upload anymore files from this forum and must use an external file up loader to upload like photobucket?

...could at least make our uploads unlimited - would be much easier and quicker too so I don't have to go to photobucket to grab the direct link just to show you a picture or two... -_-

  9. Well, Super Fast, you're looking forward into the future! :) Maybe even better - if you could do those things yourself!!:D ...speeds up the availability! I actually like the idea of yours; virtual gaming...I'd love to own my own.. yeah. But I'd probably be in my 60s or after I die before any of that will happen... :( and I'll probably be too old for games then...:(

I don't believe there's GDDR or GDDR 2, it only starts at GDDR 3 and up...unless I'm mistaken...I've never seen a graphics card that gives off GDDR 1 or GDDR 2 memory before... Only DDR or DDR2 or even SDRAM as far as I know.

And those password protection security might actually work...but if there's a keylogger(that was silently installed on your system) - then no, it won't last long though....but if you're computer don't have keyloggers, then great - it will work 100%!

  10. Oh, I almost forgot:

    - Is the CV really all I need to hand in directly to the staff or do I need to hand in something else as well?

    - Do I need also inform that I'm currently studying at uni in my CV or not, or do I give that info out when during the interview if they ask pr not if they don't?

    Thanks :)

  11. Kiddin' of course. Somebody told me that years ago as a variation on a masonic hand shake (which it isn't), and I always imagined the look it would create on an interviewers face.

You'd be remembered for sure, but I somehow think the job wouldn't follow.

    Right.....

I like your curriculum vitae by the way, looks just right for your situation, and probably better than a lot of people would put together.
Thankyou, sir! :) . Is it because of the borders I put? something else or just how it's layout?

Don't be daft (and I mean that in a nice way). I've seen peoples applications go into the bin simply because their letter of application or CV contained spelling mistakes. And people who should know better turning up for interviews looking like they'd just rolled out of bed.

Just try and give yourself an edge by getting the basics right, and I'm sure you've got skills and strong points.

 Yeah, had a uni class mate who tried to get a job at some pet store...hasn't got a call yet even though he handed his resume directly to the store manager and he also had a friend that would always remind her to call him which she hasn't yet...that's the kind of feeling I have right now if after I hand in my CV(once I finish it with all the details) directly to the store manager or staff who will and then wait for a call for an interview to realize they either forgotten or didn't like my CV... :(<_<

Okay. do they make the interview time (if I get to that stage) or am I allowed to define an appropriate interview time? Could mean the difference between me being very tired/sleepy and me being very active/energetic.

Being punctual and reliable are strong points. Being a good communicator is a skill. So make sure you mention simple things like that because not everyone thinks to. Depending upon the job, it isn't always about qualifications.
Okay, gotta be formal, no immature act... ^_^ or at least act like some kid...

And don't tickle the interviewers hand by the way. :)

Hahaha... ^_^ I sure will. Wait - there's more than one person doing the interview? I thought I was (if I get here) to only interview one guy and that's it...
  12. New Guy, sorry if none of the suggestions I gave you yet worked.

That's alright, at least you tried and that's what makes me happy here at Piriform's official forum. :) (probably why I like official forums... :) )

I don't have an older PC that will support Windows ME at the moment, but I do know what you are talking about concerning DOS games. I have a race driver game with steering wheel & gas & brake pedal that will not run under XP or higher, even under emulation mode. But it works great under 98/ME.

They never released an updated version that runs in higher OS, but I intend to get me a box that will work with it one day, just for old times sake.

Yeah, I also meant some windows games and programs too. It's best to just let it run on what it was officially supported on. I don't have any hardware that only works on older OSs...I just only got programs and games.... ;)

So far as KernelEX, I won't go so far as to say they are worthless. I have read about some of the research & problems they have been working on fixing, & to tell you the truth, I was amazed at some of the things they are able to do. I would have said it was impossible, but some of the things they accomplished inspired me.
Well, I didn't mean it was that much worthless, but personally from the descriptions as it was stated, it didn't say that it will work for anything. But then again it doesn't say it won't work for anything so that just leaves me saying - I take back what I said. :) However, of course from personal experience with this, I can say that it probably won't work for some programs and will sometimes work for others. ;)

Yeah, I also would have said it's impossible...maybe some programs/games run on this, but others don't and are missing some core files from windows 2000 and newer OSs that makes the program/game run...No emulator is perfect in it's area of intentions.... :(

If I ever run across an old box that supports ME, I may do a little testing myself & see what I can do. I tried ME under various virtual machines, but I had a few problems that did not arise in using just Win ME by itself.

So sorry if I have not been of help to you, but I hope in the future to have a solution of sorts.

Yep, and that's why you don't throw away your old computer! ^_^:P I guess I would've stopped my mum throwing out my windows 95 computer but it was too late... :( But I guess, because of my ignorance of computers, and was my first time ever too, I screwed it up - hardware side...I guess it was right for mum to throw it out; it didn't even work anymore....But I could've used the case for another computer! :D
  13. @The New Guy.

As you can see I have removed the links to spam which you seemed to think was amusing to copy and paste here from another forum.

oooops, yeah - sorry about that, Hazelnut. :D I guess that's probably why they deleted it on that forum. :) Now my reply on that forum makes no sense now... and I can't delete it or edit it to something else either... I guess I'll just leave it there... I was only pointing out what was said in the reply, that's all - just to let everyone know how my question's going in that forum. :)
  14. This is offtopic but I've to ask why are you using Win98 (or older)? :D

-_- I'm sure the moderator(s)/Admin(s) will delete you post ahahaha!:P

But since you asked(and I'm nice enough to reply to this "off topic" reply of yours :)^_^ ), and before the moderator(s)/Admin(s) decide to take action before you see this; the answer's simple - Because I still got old ass, and I mean olllldd ass computers that cannot run on newer OS without error/performance hit. That and the fact that I prefer to play old games and run old applications on old OSs, because some of them won't run on newer OSs or will run but with errors and some other crap. I also grew up with a windows 95 computer, believe it or not! And since then I grew quite attached to old OSs...

Besides...old computers can do just almost the things I would do on my laptop: type up word docs, play games go on the internet etc. They are backup in case my other computers crapped out on me or I can't be bother booting them and using my good old Windows 98 SE computer. ^_^

And top of that, yes - I do know of the compatibility tab on 2000 and newer OSs, but they always don't work...they might start good, but eventually end up as without using compatibility settings. -_- So it's better off to start programs/games on what OS(s) they were officially supported on. Haha, you might be lucky to run something on Windows ME, even though it doesn't say on the box or readme file that it supports ME...But that's just luck - gotta try it some time.

And one more thing, I don't know if this is true or not, but if it is, then there's no OS emulator that works 100% without error of some kind. Thus, I've experienced KernelEx, which is one example why, they are useless and I don't even bother to search them and/or try downloading them. :)

  15. Sorry, I am wrong and you are right.

If you drop it 1 mtr onto a sleeping cat then you will hear a noise :o

...yeah, that's if I idiotically decide to drop it on some cat...

Then you should wait for year 2013. Nobody knows what will be the best componentes then and with what price. Also you'd know your budjet better so you/we/I wouldn't have to guess if you (ever) get eg. 6000$ or even 3000$ and your opinions might change during this time. You might not need such overpriced PC anymore. :P

    ...that's if we survive doomsday(if that's even real)... :P

...mmmm, don't think my opinions of having a custom built, by me, top of the line gaming PC would change... :P I've never had a top of the line gaming PC before nor have I've seen one, yet(the per-built ones at shops I've seen are not even close, let alone to my preferences - despite their prices...)...so, now I want to build my own...so I can feel it. ;) The epic power, unleashed by XP F.E! ^_^ That's motivation....and maybe be the first, unless someone else beaten me to it, the top-of-the-line gaming PC 2012/2013 running on a dual boot of Windows XP Professional x86 Edition and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition! ^_^

  16. First impressions again.

Big job or little job, if you want it my friend, you've got to make yourself a more attractive proposition to that company than the other guys.

...I feel....now worthless....if there are others' doing the same thing and probably doing this with the help of their own degree....or better abilities....

And make sure you learn something from an interview. If you fail, learn from it, and take that knowledge to your next interview. If you're a young man, you may have quite a few interviews ahead of you.

Anyways, that's just some thoughts based upon experience.

Okay, I'll learn next time, from my mistakes, if I make any...or know what I did wrong, otherwise, I'd be more prone to do it again...

Then shake his foot! :P Older men seem like they're trying to break fingers though when shaking hands for some odd reason.

If it's for a computer job it would help to mention what Microsoft Office applications you're familiar with and know how to use, i.e; Word, Excel, etc.

...oooo.... better not let them break my fingers, that'll hurt! Maybe two can play at that game!^_^:D Hehehe...or am I not allowed to do that?

    Okay...applications...hmm....I'll improvise...hehehe...or try to remember...

Many universities have services to help their students with job seeking. They call'em Student Placement Offices, Human Resource Programs, Guidance Counselors, and so on. If you have someone assigned to you as your advisor, aka Academic Advisor, he or she would be a big help. Sometimes the university itself has jobs that they more or less reserve for students.

Please don't misunderstand, I'm not trying to shuffle you off to someone else. And all the advice above is really good, imho. I'm just suggesting that face to face conversation with someone who knows the environment makes things easier.

edit: And I agree w/ Andavari, be prepared for the Gorilla Gripper. . .never have known why they do that. . .theories abound, mostly junk psychology. Probably some sort of dominance ploy. :)

...hm, I'll try to get my Learning Advisor in this, hehehe...^_^ She might help me out with this kind of thing...hopefully...:)

eeeeep. So what am I suppose to do if I feel that this guy's trying to break my fingers? Do I squeeze back even harder? Make a handshake squeeze war? heheh, probably not inappropriate but still...actually best not to do that at all, I have minimal squeezing power in my hand....so I would probably lose the war...

  17. The google links should have helped you, for example, in maybe finding the best "template" for a resume, or CV as we call them over here.

If you've never done a CV before, and you don't have a history of different jobs to fill one with, then either design your own, or look for a template suitable to your situation, which appears to be fresh out of university. You don't need a CV which has spaces for your work history and the reasons for leaving different jobs etc..

A little reading, and you might find just what you want without designing your own, or leaving out essential information.

The suggestions were really aimed at someone looking for a career, who may be applying for jobs with moderate sized or large companies, and required to provide as professional looking a CV as they can.

Is this good enough, I made this myself - by the way, I also included some of my interests, hobbies abilities etc. in it. :)^_^ :CV.png

    CV1.png

How is this? Is this any good? What else do I need to do?

Regardless, if you want to have some kind of advantage over the other people applying for a job, you have to do some preparation. Even if it's a one man operated computer shop, I'm sure he would be flattered if you told him his shop has a great reputation in the area for quality service, and you're sure you could learn a lot from him, as well as adding your own skills to his.

Have you any skills to offer him? What are your strong points?

Hmmm, I that's actually a hard question to answer....if this guy owns a computer shop, surely he'd know everything about computers making me feel like it's probably best not to even bother with my luck...:(

Don't walk into any interview with absolutely nothing in your head, and if he shakes hands first, great, but don't offer a limp wrist in return.
Hehehe....so, I'll just let it be if he/she which in this case is a he offers first.

And don't assume that anyone interviewing you actually knows the first thing about interviewing someone for a job. You will be surprised at how many "interviewers" don't have a clue about the process, and it wouldn't cross their minds to actually shake hands with you. They'll be as nervous as you, and a confident but not cocky attitude will help put them at ease.
    ...
  18. Hm, looks like BartPE is just making a live bootable CD/DVD windows disc....might help, but I want to do this natively under windows ME or 98se...

    :)

What I mean is, in C:\Windows\System32 of Windows 7, there is defrag.exe

Since you installed KernelEX & Defraggler doesn't seem to work, would Windows 7 defrag.exe work if you copied it over to Windows ME?

If not, what about the defrag util with Vista or XP?

Do not confuse the .exe with dfrgui in the C:\Windows\System32, as this is not the actual defrag program. Of course, you could copy both of them over, to be sure, and try clicking both of them. Copy dfrgui & also defrag.exe to C:\Windows\System32 & see if it works.

Tried both, dfgui.exe and defrag.exe from windows 7, my XP didn't have dfgui.exe only found defrag.exe though - still didn't work...The XP one showed the same error, the windows 7 one showed, something different:( -_-, upload failed....but got another way :) I can't do VISTA's as I don't have VISTA OS computer at home... :P9.png

Also, KernelEx doesn't show up on the file properties... :wacko:Where is it??Where's the tab??? 8.png

I asked about .Net, because even if Defraggler doesn't use it, there is a Vista version of Yahoo that they released a while back with matrix mode IM (See up to 9 IM in a tic tac toe design all at once) as well as other cool features before they discontinued it. It did not normally work in XP, but if you installed .net 3.5, then it did work in XP. So, since you have the emulator installed, thought it would be cool to test if it did work with that or not.
Well, this is the result, regardless what OS I'm emulating to run the installer, both from exe and another from extracted version:c82895e4.png

No progress yet on my question asked on Source Forge's forums, but some spammer... -_-<_< which is now deleted... :P:lol:

  19. Pretty basic build, there's some parts I wouldn't choose and the guide is a bit out-dated.
The extreme build guide is pretty good I must say...for $4000.... ^_^ - and that's without those nice visuals....But yes, it's a bit outdatedd...maybe one for 2013 sometime coz that'll mostly likely be when I'll build my dream gaming rig...but I guess I could do it sometime towards the end of the year...if I get that kind of money... ^_^ What else do you think is missing or what should be altered in that guide?

Hmmm, didn't know you needed a dedicated sound card to your extreme gaming rig....I thought onboard sound was good enough...they already support EAX 5 or/and some other audio capabilities...But if you do, maybe onboard sound is "crap", I'd want one that has a digital optic outlet as I might hook the audio to a my home theater surround sound system, maybe 5.1 or 7.1....Make it the best audio gaming experience ever for me! :D^_^

  20. Why would you want to drop your SSD from 1m height? :D

Because you said they're not easily broken! Hahahahahah!!

SSDs usually are "2.5 and they are silent as USB-stick. :D

Hm, I'll believe that statement when I get mine! :P
Yes, Ivy Bridge is newer than Sandy Bridge, also better.
    Okay. :)
I wouldn't suggest SLI, at least not tri- or quad-SLI.
Why wouldn't you recommend SLI? It doubles game's fps in SLI, should triple fps in Tri mode and quadrible that(not from Tri mode but in normal mode) in Quad-SLI. -_-
Nah, wouldn't recommend a CRT monitor anymore.
    ...
Yeah, there's more to it to LCD monitors.. ;)
    Oh boy....
  21. SSDs are overall faster than HDDs and they are constantly getting better and faster.

    Other SSD pros:

    - No moving parts = no sound

    - No moving parts = doesn't get broken as easily

    - Better (lower) power consumption

    - Smaller size (easier to install etc.)

Hm...never seen an SSD before....I know some things good about it, but haven't seen one though....how small are they? are they like 2 and half inch? same as standard 3.5 insh HDDs? How quite are they? Are they "really" that quite that you can't even hear the, working, even if you're pushing it? So if I got an SSD, I can just drop it from a height of about 1 metres and it won't break? Power consumption is good, less than that of a HDD...

Are there any negatives to SSDs? Besides what Super Fast said, if that's even true....?

Depends on your use, but if you play games you probably should get new:

    - SSD (for Windows / Software / Games)

    - Motherboard

    - RAM

    - depends on use but ~8GB DDR3 is usually enough

    - CPU

    - Ivy Bridge i7 or i5 (quad / 4-core)

    - GPU

    - best single-card GPU AMD 7990 or NVIDIA GTX690 (both dual-core GPUs) or cheaper single-core eg. AMD 7970/7950 or NVIDIA GTX680

    - Not mandatory but maybe some good SATA3 HDD for storage etc

    - I'd recommend a new monitor, too. Size from 20"-26" depends on the space and how close you sit. IPS-panel monitors are better, but TN-panels are cheaper.

All of this depends on how much you could spend on your new PC.

Yeah...something along those lines, if I can't get my preferred parts....Ivy Bridge is newer than Sandy right? and better too? I might SLI or Tri-SLI or even Quad-SLI my graphics cards if I can....if the motherboard I pick supports it, of course...You don't recommend any CRT monitors? I see... <_< I know, I know they're out dated and no shops sells them anymore....but thought I could use an existing one at home...just need to find a 19 inch or bigger CRT monitor....I like 5:4 aspect ratio, or maybe 4:5....so I'm a square man. Wide-screen, are for watching movies....Oh great - there's more to it to LCD monitors!? Wow....IPS and TN....hmm.....there's actually another - VA....wow....so much research just to get your parts.... :o
