  1. "Marked for deletion" means the files in question are in use by the operating system at the time and so cannot be deleted "immediately"

instead, Windows has a special registry setting where files can be set to be deleted on the next boot - that's what happens to these index.dat files - they only get deleted when you next boot the PC (but rest assured, they do get deleted!) - Internet Explorer will subsequently recreate new versions of these files when you start using it again.

but this should mean that the index.dat files aren't erased beyond recovery, which is what the OP seems (partly) concerned about. My guess is the file is just marked as deleted (not securely deleted) and is lying in free space, meaning it can be recovered.
  2. I've looked around the forums as I remember this question being asked not too long ago, and as usual, I can't find the thread!

The answer was something along the lines that Windows XP Add/Delete feature hides certain things that CCleaner lists, and these are things that shouldn't be uninstalled, but beyond that I can't remember the answer, sorry.

The thread is here somewhere, and from the past 2 or 3 weeks...

    EDIT:

    found it!

  3. Hi...I have the program poser and I am wondering how do I add this to ccleaner?...At the moment I am using ccleaner but because it doesn't clean my poser I also use cleanup as it recognises poser...I have ccleaner set to save things I want so would prefer just to use the one...But for the life of me I have no idea how to add poser?

    Can anyone help me?

It may help point you in the right direction. It seems a bit confusing at first but eventually I worked out how to do it, to add cleaning the MRU registry entries for Excel Viewer.

  4. Hello, and welcome to the CC forum!

You should find all applications that are being cleaned under the Applications tab. Just uncheck those that you don't want to be touched.

You can also go to Options, Custom - where you can add any folder or file to be excluded from cleaning.

as far as I can see, the Options -> Custom feature is to add any file or folder to be cleaned, not excluded from cleaning.

    Perhaps I'm missing something?

  5. What do you use? Firefox? Opera? And why? I'm trying to decide whether to switch from IE to Firefox but can't seem to make my mind up.

I switched to FF about 2 years ago, and have never regretted it. Firefox is by far a better browser, more user friendly and safer, as most exploits appear aimed at IE, since it is part of Windows. It has tabbed browsing, meaning you can view more than one website within the browser. It also doesn't have index.dat files in the way IE has. This means they are easily deleted, unlike the index.dat files within IE which take some removing.

There are also some cool Themes that can be downloaded, to change the appearance (skin) of FF and the user interface can be personalised in a much better way than IE.

It's no coincidence that IE7 looks more like FF, while IE6 looks clunky and old fashioned.

  6. You definitely wouldn't want it for 98/Me anyway. It can only serve to make things worse.

Would you have any idea when IE7 is coming out of beta? It was supposed to be last autumn / fall but is yet to be fully released...
  7. It's what displays icons as either 'Always Show', 'Always Hide', or 'Hide when inactive' in the Systray next to the clock in WinXP based upon your preferences.

    To see what's in yours:

    1. Right click the Task Bar then click Properties.

    2. Click Customize at the bottom right.

That's what CCleaner can cleanup if you use the Tray Notifications Cache, however you must restart Windows after using that feature.

    3. After Windows starts and you use a few programs that use the Systray then open up the Customize Notifications via the instructions in #1 and #2 to customize how icons will display next to the clock.

ah, cheers! I like all my (running program) icons to show, so I'll leave it unchecked!
  8. Well with MRU-Blaster it could be related to having SP2, because when SP2 was released it could no longer clean the Custom Notifications icons (called Tray Notifications Cache in CCleaner) any longer.

Just tested CCleaner and it doesn't clean my Run box either, however for me it doesn't really matter because I had MS Tweak UI config Windows to do it all on it's own when I log off or restart.

out of interest, what is the Tray Notifications Cache (TNC)? I've always had this unchecked. But the entries in Run do clear after a restart, which I do anyway, for the index.dat files wipes.

I don't think the entries in Run clear after a restart if I don't run CC so it's not an automatic MRU purge by the system, and I haven't got the feature in Tweak enabled. Though getting the Recent Programs feature in Start to clear takes clicking "Start" a few times. Is this controlled by the TNC too? What else does this feature clear?

  9. Well... the run mru box isnt working in this version.(at least on my pcs)

Although the recent documents was cleaned.

Guess its time to tell mr.g. -_-

on my computer, the Start -> Run (MRU) box only clears after a restart, and it's not just with CCleaner that this happens: it does it with other cleaning programs that clear MRU lists, such as MRU-Blaster too. I just assumed it was a quirk of the computer. In fact, I'm sure it happened with my previous computer too.

I'm sure it's not a problem to be worried about?

  10. IE7 - ??

Using IE6 here.. but on Windows ME and 98 Second edition on my computers..

Is IE7 for XP only or something .. or for ME / 98 as well?

    Thanks in advance...

I've never checked back for a while, but one of the Windows newsgroups on usenet said that IE7 will only be available for WXP, and perhaps only for SP2 too.

I may be wrong, but I'm sure new Windows software like IE7 are only to be made available for WXP operating systems.

  11. I have just installed CCleaner, and so far it seems to work very well.

I have one small problem. I went to Options / Cookies, and chose to keep about 12 of my cookies and delete the rest. This worked fine for Internet Explorer. But all the cookies are still visible in Firefox.

I have Firefox listed under Applications on the Cleaner page, and I carefully ticked the relevant Cookies box. When I ran Analyze, it correctly showed me which cookies it was going to delete. When I clicked Run Cleaner, it said it had deleted them. But I can still see them in Firefox.

I have CCleaner ver. 1.27.260, Firefox 1.5.0.1 and Windows XP Home. I am the only user account.

    Thanks in advance.

    Mike

I just tried a quick test and CCleaner cleared all my Firefox cookies - I double checked by checking the Cookies file in FF.

However, I have a more up-to-date version of CCleaner, ver 1.28.177. That said, there was an issue regarding the cleaning of FF Cookies, but this was meant to be addressed by the version you have:

    v1.27.260 - [14th February 2006]

    - Added secure file deletion.

    - Added Windows HotFix Uninstaller cleaning.

    - Added optional IE toolbar.

    - Updated application icon.

    - Fixed large file size issue.

    - Fixed Firefox cookie error.

Unless you want to update your version of CCleaner, you could just add the FF Cookies file to the Custom Files / Folders option.

Other than the CCleaner version and a slightly different FF version (I have 1.5.0.2) our computers have the same set up, WXP Home, single user account. I can only suggest therefore you either upgrade CCleaner or use the Custom option to resolve the problem...

My mistake here: I overlooked the part where you said you chose to keep some cookies, and deleted the others.

I just retested by visiting a number of sites in my bookmarks, then selectively choosing to keep a number of cookies. CC deleted all the others, and I confirmed this by checking in the FF Cookies file. I then removed a few more cookies, ran CC again and again it worked fine. I then finally chose to delete all cookies and all were gone.

Obviously, as you want to keep some cookes, the custom option is probably not an option.

  12. Google Desktop makes indexes of files, and those indexes remain after the files have gone. You'd have to flush Google Desktop's entire database and re-start it if you want sensitive information to be flushed from G.D.

which of course begs the question: why install Google Desktop in the first place if you want to flush sensitive information....
