  1. Yes, that's the Webtv I was referring to. I guess we should call it MSNTV since MSN owns it now.

    Thanks for the reply :)

Bizarre as this sounds - get them to check their Java settings ......

At work, we have had occasions when the settings of 'higher' spec graphics cards make the Java settings confuse graphic issues with lower (i.e. small jpegs / apps) images.

Try disabling the Direct3d and / or OpenGL (mainly D3d usually)

I honestly have no idea what or how WebTV works but if it use Java then this may be why.

If it is only your avatar that is missing then I'm afraid your friends may have selective blindness and may not like u

(btw daft as it sounds - it is a suggestion, so try not to slate me pls !!!)

  2. How come so long?? How much stuff you got in My documents folder?

'Bout 150Gb file with a not-so-fast mc, and a rather slowish ex. HD !!

(believe me there is a lotta work crap that I would take great pleasure in 'losing' !)

  3. IF they keep to specific targets its fine, oherwise keep an eye out for "anti-fedware"

As much as the FBI et al can write sophisticated software (just look at minesweeper  ), I would have thought that somehow the principal of key-loggers etc. would still be the same & spyware / AV software should detect 'some' activity ? I may be wrong, but anyway I do agree (in principal) - but only as long it is targeted to specific 'suspects' (just like phone-tapping) then Joe-Public has nothing to worry about - but if it starts getting slipped into a 'Windows Update' (for example) then ....??? (your next tax raise could be just paying for it ...!!)

  4. Yes moving My Docs is easy:

Just create a new folder on the new harddrive to house the document files.

Then right click on the "MY Document" directory (The one on the desktop or start menu should be fine),

Click Properties, Click Move, Browse to the new folder on the new hard drive secect it, click ok.

    Done.

Brilliant - cheers fireryone - that worked a treat. Worked a lot easier that I thought it would be. (just took a nerve-wracking 2 hours to move !)

Just gotta remember to change my backup (& other) settings to point to G: !!!

    Thanks again !

  5. Yeah, it's probably like trying to open Firefox when it just exited from some error and hasn't fully closed. <_<

I'll update later tonight when I try to turn off my computer.

I've had this a couple of times - usually when I try to hibernate .... it winges about having not enough resources (which is rubbish) and a little exclamation mark (if I remember correctly) in the task bar. (I can then only Standby - if I am lucky)

I have nothing else running .... bit bizarre.

  6. Hello all,

I was wondering if it possible to move the 'My Documents' folder (and maybe other Windows folders) to another drive?

I recently bought an external hard-drive, and I just realized (even though I backup onto it) if my computer died it would be easier if it was on an external drive anyhow.

    Any info would be nice.

    Cheers for your advice.

  7. So is that your excuse for doing nothing. It will take centuries to undo, so why bother?

If man kind has even any sort of responsibilty to this planet, it is to leave the planet is somesort of habitable state for both our children and the rest of the animal kingdom - right now we are doing precious little.

God help us we may find out we can do nothing, but lets not sit on our fat, arrogant backsides claiming there is nothing we can do, whilst pumping millions of tons of s**t into the atmosphere... and in the meantime while we debate the subject, the rest of the planet dies around us.

To say we are not destroying the Earth we live in, is sticking your head in the sand and not listening to, or believing most of the scientific world.

Doing nothing because you might have to pay an few extra dollars to run your 4x4 or your air-con is just plain selfish.

There is no excuse for doing nothing.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying we should do nothing (anything we do do will only have an affect hundreds of years from now)

What I was getting at is that suddenly 'we' are to blame and 'we' must sort it out ... 'we' have to pay more tax for using a fuel that was invented 150 years ago. The damage was done then, but it is now in the 'cleaner' age of things that we are being bullied into paying for clean-up.

It is even more futile when you consider that 65% of the worlds' pollution etc. is from countries that do not want to sign-up to the Kyoto Agreement.

We in Britain were told that if we did this & did that we could reduce our carbon footprint by nearly 40% - sounds good until you work out that Britain alone only contributes a total of 2% of the world emissions. 40% of 2% ain't much no matter how you look at it.

Yes, if we all did something we could (eventually) clean-up this planet (but the key is 'all')

What I was getting at was the 'high-and-mighty' governments that like to blame us 'minions' for polluting the planet as if it was our fault that the industrial revolution happened. I wasn't saying that we should do nothing - of course we should, but I don't want to be made as if it is my fault, and my fault alone that there is a hole in the atmosphere.

Anyway, I eat cardboard - that's bound to help

  8. The bad thing about floppies though is their ability to get bad sectors very easily, even without using them. I was all for Iomega ZIP drives back in like 1998 until mine got the click of death. Now looking back I was spending way too much on ZIP disks compared to what flash-based USB backup devices costs nowadays.

Actually, Andavari you have just reminded me of the days when you specified the bad sectors of a disc. Nowadays, everybody thinks the bad sectors are no more (not quite) - these are programmed into the drives nowadays.

Anyway, not so much a worst thing that happened - just a 'worst-thing' was when if I knew I needed to use the computer, I had to start booting it 3 hours before I could use it !!

  9. whoa it seems a ton of people also had this problem. i thought i was the only person who cared about it LOL. Thanks to you guys for replying to me and helping me. here is what i found so far from other people:

There are ways around this problem. The directories are being created (and held open) by WINLOGON.EXE. - Boot into safe mode. - Remove the offending directories. - Create a text file with the same name as the directory (make sure it no longer has the .txt extension). - From the command prompt, set the system and hidden attributes. (attrib +s +h "msn gaming zone") Because the files have the same name as the annoying directories, WINLOGON can't create or open directories with that name. If Windows has been set to hide protected operating system files (see Folder Options, view tab), you won't see the text files anymore. There must be a way to hack WINLOGON to prevent it from creating this worthless crud, but I haven't found it yet.

I owe this solution to 'twister', who lives/posts here:

    http://www.asendtechnologies.com/vb/showthread.php?t=6868

This will give you added power over your Xtremely Pesky operating system. I did the

following and have had NO problems

Do a find on 'sfcfiles'. You need to do the advanced search option, and check 'Search

system folders', 'Search hidden files', and 'Search sub folders'.

Results will be sfcfiles.dll, in one or more places. Change all their names (highlight

the file and hit F2) to sfcfilesold.dll.

XP may tell you that you are being very very BAD, so tell XP to go piss up a rope...lol........

Restart, and voila, you can delete nwwia, xerox etc.

Windows 2000 and XP include a feature called Windows File Protection (WFP), part of the System File Checker, which is intended to avoid some of the common DLL consistency issues. This feature may also block valid attempts to change system files and it can therefore be disabled using this tweak.

Open your registry and find the key below.

Change the value of "SFCDisable" to equal "ffffff9d" to disable WFS or "0" to enable it. The other valid hexadecimal values are:

    # 1 - disabled, prompt at boot to re-enable

    # 2 - disabled at next boot only, no prompt to re-enable

    # 4 - enabled, with popups disabled

    # ffffff9d - for completely disabled

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

Additional Steps for Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 and Windows XP

This setting is disabled in Windows 2000 SP2 and Windows XP, and needs to re-enabled using a hex editor and changing SFC.DLL (or SFC_OS.DLL for Windows XP) following these instructions:

After a reboot, you are then able to remove the folders as you normally would. Be aware that this does, however, also remove the protection of critical system files, which depending on your level of expertise, could be either good or bad. The tweak itself is harmless.

I managed to safely remove "Program files\MSN Gaming Zone" and "Program Files\xerox" and keep them removed.

    Here's how:

1 - Boot in Safe Mode and delete the folders

2 - While in Safe Mode, start Notepad (or Wordpad, etc).

3 - I enter this text in the file: "This file is to prevent Winos from re-creating a directory with the same file name."

4 - Save the file as "MSN Gaming Zone" (if an extension got stuck on, remove it).

5 - Change the permissions on "MSN Gaming Zone" to "Read Only." (It can be tricky to get at the "OK" button in Safe Mode!)

    6 - Reboot normally.

Now you'll have a regular read-only file named "MSN Gaming Zone," which isn't perfect, but it's better than having the silly directory.

I used the same method to remove "NetMeeting," "Frontpage," "Outlook Express," "Windows Media Player" and some other garbage.

If you ever have any problems, just delete the file you created. All this works in Win2000 and XP.

    Good Luck

I've managed to get rid of a bunch of these annoying things with some real heavy artillery... I mount my windows xp drive in linux with the experimental ntfs read/write driver and delete them from there. Windows File Protection can't save you now! hahaha! Anyone who wants to do neat things like this could just get one of the "live-on-cd" linux distributions (www.knoppix.com). You don't even need to install linux permenantly.

Just curious ... why bother? These files belong to Windows ( I kjnow they are applications, as such - but they do belong to windows)

I have bee trying to delete them for years, with no (permanent) luck. If you aren't using 'MSN Gaming Zone' etc., why bother delete them (especially as they are zero bytes)?

  10. The site is back up again,

The click fight must have overloaded the servers, because I couldn't get back since I posted the link here.

Here are the results of game 4 (Ended 6-Jun-07)

    http://www.clickclickclick.com/results.asp?g=4

    1. Hungary 1,652,494,431

    2. Japan 1,602,394,824

    3. Chile 5,507,657

Total Clicks in Game 4: 3,316,464,000

That is a lot of clicking!

I wonder how many mice they went through...

It's broke again at the minute.

Is there a point to sites like this I wonder ?

    Prob. not.

  11. Is it your first time to see that? You should play with the Accessibility Options

I unticked the "Use shortcut" in the Sticky Keys settings... and the other boxes too :D

fraid whether you un-tick these options, hitting shift key 5+ times in a row will bring up this option.

Quite ironic really as I spilt a beer over my keyboard last week, and I really do have a 'sticky' keyboard....!!!

  12. na, I mean an app that can prevent selected processes from writing themselves to the page file instead of staying in the RAM. There are some apps that I always have running that get written to the page file, which causes the process to have to be rewritten back to the ram when it is called again. this causes a severe slowdown since my hard disk is not very fast.

If your hard-drive is that slow that you notice the paging, would it not be more beneficial to buy a new HD ?

I don't know your circumstances, but rather than trying to override the default behaviour of Windows apps etc.

    IMHO

  13. Hi Hazelnut

Sorry to here about all the flooding, and loss of life is never good.

Here in Australia we are still struggling with drought conditions.

However in south east Victoria "Gippsland" they are also having heaps of rain and bad flooding today.

The worlds weather patterns have gone a bit crazy, must be global warming.

Up in some parts of the high country "north east victoria" we had 20cm "8 inches" snow fall over the last 24hours, then again it is winter here.

It's always upsetting with the loss of life, but it always makes me smirk when everybody jumps on the 'global warming' band-wagon when a weather disaster occurs.

Yes, I will admit that some 'issues' may be down to how we have destroyed our own protection (primarily from last century), but a lot has to do with natural evolution.

Since time began (or at least since the earth we know evolved) the planet has been in an 'eb-and-tide' of (global) seasons. We (our ancestors) have went through heatwaves / droughts / floods / ice-cap recession / ice-cap growth (remember ice-age) over the ages, and 'that' is what we need to remember.

Don't let your governments blame you & make you pay for something that you (in reality) cannot do anything about - ever, full-stop.

(you know if we all stop every polluting activity today it will still take at least 200 years to make an 'adequate' impact ...!

Recorded history is very short - relatively speaking - and we have not much previous experience of radical weather. After all the Earth is x million years old - and we have records for, say, 200 years ...?

Hmmm, just realised I went off on a bit of a rant and a bit off subject ... sorry about that. It's still kinda relevant (I think)

  14. well im in a chat room, users can view other ppls cams and mics. but it only works if you have a cam.

is there anything that imitates a cam that i could use?

If you don't want ppl to view you cam, then why not just face it against a wall? They will still be able to hear everything (as the mic is free), but they can't see anything.

    Or am I missing something?

  15. I don't really need more space, but I do wanna be the first (in the office at least) to have a terabyte of HD space  in a personal computer

(i'll just try not to think about defragging !)

  16. I've just spent the day looking on eBay for a phone I really want.

I haven't bought anything yet (I have been eBaying for other low-value items for some time though without problems), but this particualr phone seems to sell on average for around ?250-?300 (retail is around ?350-?400) - anyway, I did notice quite a few ridiculously high offers like ?1,000+ !! for the same phone. Most of these users had the sense to check out the bidders history & cancel the bids if at all suspicious.

It does make me think twice about selling high-value items on eBay (at least to international un-confirmed bidders)

The other downside is that PayPal is all to easy to allow you claim back money (that's how these scammers steal stuff) by claiming it was not received.

Best advice I can give is send only to a confirmed address if selling. If this is not possible, insure & track the item - this way you can proove to paypal that it was delivered.

If buying, make sure you read the sellers feedback ratings. If a user has been on eBay for example 4 to 5 years, but has a very low rating (i.e zero or one) I would be slightly wary.

Send them an email, if they are genuine they'll quite happily talk about the item.

I'm not sure if this helps you make your mind up, but in my own mind I'm reluctant to give anyone ?200+ whether it's a high-street or otherwise ;)

The thing is, unless your gonna get an absolute bargain, it is probably not worth the headache for the sake of saving say ?30.

  17. Thanks for that - very useful for my home PC (not so much for work as they use XP :-)

    You can also put you computer in Hibernate mode by folloing the same mthod but enter the following;

    %windir%\system32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState
