  1. Holy s**t. I totally can image my brother installing it... would mean some reformatting for me.

Why do people do these kind of programs? I'm sick of all this spyware and viruses. Haven't got one for a long time, but because of them, I constantly have to think what to do and whatnot =/.

  2. Nah, if you must, leave either one on. I recommend leaving the resident shield off though, as it takes resources for no good reason.

Just think more about where they can come and don't let them in at the first place. It's already too late if they've invaded your computer.

  3. You may try it, just be careful. Drivers are never easy ones when it comes to reinstalling.

I haven't familiarized myself with how this optimizer works, as it just gave good results with a few clicks and "Exit". But if I remember right, it writes changes to the that part of a registry which controls Windows Networking in general. So reinstalling drivers maybe isn't the complete solution. Anyway, I'd go for them for now.

  4. Damn, topic's name let me expect red flags and armed civilians storming spammer strongholds. Well, I guess you can't always get what you want =(

But seriously. This seems a very good idea and I will make a good use of it in case I get these crappy advertising mails.

  5. Have you tried... Fixing your connection trough Network Connections (or whatever it is in english)? Also, check your connection devices like ADSL-modem with ADSL-connection and so on. I'd go for basics first because I have tried this optimizer and whereas it didn't do anything magical, it neither did anything bad to my system.

  6. Only if you're behind NAT and DHCP. If you are in direct connection with your ISP, it returns the real IP. Almost every if not every router which has two or more ports is behind NAT and uses DHCP. Single-ported routers usually give the real IP right away.

  7. Have you installed .NET Framework 1.1 lately?

If so, might as well as go and get rid of that .NET ASP profile which is hidden on startup screen but visible in user control. I never had any use for it, and if I had understood right, it's only needed for .NET developers. (Actually some times ago there was a update that got rid of it by itself. Doesn't seem to be here anymore though.)

  8. I really don't consider blocking ads stealing. Nothing which improves my computer's usability or security can be stealing. Really, a ad banner or two in nice places, outside of the main area of view, without any flashing texts or sound is ok. But a site full of flashing and ringing banners coupled with javascript windows telling that your computer is at risk clearly isn't ok.

Really, when I surf the web, I don't look for advertisements. And what I don't look for, I don't want to see.

  9. It's possible yes, but I have always shutted down my 7 year old computer at nights, and it has seen more than enough reboots at days too. Drive's still completely healthly. 7 years is a lot, in that time I have buyed 2 more computers. So my conclusion is that you propably shouldn't worry about it unless you plan on spending like ten years with same computer.

  10. I'd also recommend thinking whether to start using Vista on this computer or not. I bought pretty powerful computer recently, with Core Duo 2 6600 @ 3.2 mHz (overclocked on site), 2 Gb DDR2, 500 Gb Samsung Spinpoint, etc. but instead of Vista, I took trusty old XP instead. Mainly because of Vista's compatibility problems with many software and hardware, but also because it really takes a lot of RAM. That shop even recommended XP instead for this set.

    Of course, it's your choice.

  11. You will be replacing the hard drive more often that way. All that shutting down and starting up will wear it out sooner. Stand by mode is practically off without all the rebooting..

I don't really get it, as in both cases the hard drives are shut down and brought back up. Sooo... What's the point? =)

My computer gets a little rest too when I go to sleep - no need to keep it running unless there was some downloads, defragging, or something else time consuming. Can't understand some of my friends who leave the computer on overnight just for the sake of it.

  12. Yep, these guides have served my purposes nicely. They contain very useable information, though some may not agree with spesific recommendations in guides. It's better check the main section of the site too, since TweakGuides Tweaking Companions are just two of the many useful guides here.

  13. Can you use the Live CD to backup these important documents? If so, I'd recommend doing this as things can go more wrong later.

My guess would be that boot section is somewhat corrupted. You could try Windows CD, which provides basic installation repair tools. Boot up with that and see if there is anything to do. And wait for somebody who can help you more =)

  14. For example, CCleaner detects one F-Secure Internet Security 2006-2007 component as a bad entry and will give option to remove it. But after removing it and rebooting, it usually comes back because FSIS creates it again. Removing this entry at start isn't recommended tough, and your entries may be something like this. It's best to keep these few untouched, because after all, they can't do anything bad here either. Leave them alone?

  15. My last infection was MSBlaster, if I remember right. That bastard didn't want to leave me alone, and came back even after reformating :P

Later my surfing habits and all kinds of computer security increased and well... Haven't seen anything since.
