  1. Its how Vista security works....For too long MS has had poor security models like in XP and 2000. Just deal with it, or ask Mr G to explore a service CCleaner rather than a user mode app

  2. It has everything to do with encoding in mpeg4-asp. 50% real world performance improvement. There is no objective proof if you measure divx against proper objective tests say opsnr / ssm against xvid. All of the comparisons that show xvid to be a better encoder are subjective in nature and prone to bias.

For decoding, I consider libavcodec born ffdshow to be the best mpeg4-asp decoder.

XVID is a legacy open source project where most of the devs have moved onto newer better formats like H.264. It's really only Divx that has continued in the mpeg4-asp space.

  3. MS was one of the first software houses with a proper usability lab. In fact I can perform my usual functions on Vista x64 IE7 in less mouse clicks than gran paradiso.

Actually I think that MS's biggest problem these days is its turned into a company as large as IBM (MS used to be the underdog)- theres too many players on the road to escrow for releases. Is that worse than gran paradiso going to beta with hundreds of bugs? Who's to say I guess.

  4. IMHO Foobar is the best quality music program when setup with the ASIO add on. If you dont have reference monitors though I say that the difference cant be heard.

I use alternative mpeg4-asp directshow decoders other than Divx because their player is bloated. I use ffdshow decoders - being libavcodec derivitaves.

I think with the new sse4 instructions the Divx encoder is better than anyother mpeg4-asp encoder out there but then again, VC-1 or H.264 is a few better encoding standard anyway.

  5. Its extensible in user add on inis. Though the idea that there is one semi official user add on (Twisted Metals) in my view is poor because Vista has different system and application paths to XP and it really requires a Vista user to do their own ini to fully cleanup on that platform.

If Piriform open source it they loose their IP and make it harder to sell it later on if they wished too.

  6. This is more FUD. The test, which is surely to go down in history as a farce, used different builds of office.

The real reason why XP performance is improving is that the tricks learnt under the new secure development lifecycle that MS initiated as part of its trustworthy computing initiative is being re-engineered into the XP kernel. Vista and Windows Server 2008 are the first OS's to go through this in MS's history. In XP though Memory management still lacks superfecth and the 64 bit support on the 64 bit version of XP is poor next to Vista 64 bit.

It is possible to create certain tests to grossly mislead how better Vista is over XP in 64 bit memory intensive tasks but that would be just spreading more fud with claims like "400% better performance in Vista over x64 XP!". Recently a Windows Server 2008 build did over 400% better than 2003 server under MS's "dogfood" testing of infrastructure which is one practical example of how the newer technologies work in certain situations.

Too many people still have the view that service packs are a significant thing. Windows update has changed the face of configuration management. Ive been on connect for sometime with SP1 and the only real thing I am interested in that isnt publicly available is the enhancements to bitlocker on other volumes.

  7. OneCare had problems with detection rates - as a product concept though it's new ground and Norton copied it with their 360 product. I participated in the OneCare beta because I am obligated to - detection rates are now much better and I would point out that the Storm worm was detected by OneCare where I understand only Kaspersky also did before the IDs were added by the AV companies. I do not currently consider OneCare to be as strong as KasperSky and Nod.

MS has an uncanny ability to eventually win the day and I'm convinced in a few years the situation will be different.

  8. I'm running Vista x64 and OneCare Beta. I will probably not continue to use OneCare once it goes gold. Mainly because while it is inevitable that MS will conquer the av market in time they arent together enough to compete with Kasperksy and Nod right not.
