Thanks for taking the time to make these suggestions even though no one bothered to answer you the first time. I like that very much.
I'm sure Defraggler's team will look into this and correct the glitches...

I hope it will work out soon for all of you. Avira really is worth waiting for. It's an excellent program and we get it for free...

A new version of Sandboxie came out 2 days ago, by the way. Remember to update: http://www.sandboxie.com/
-
Haha!
Yes, indeed. Copy/paste certainly has it limits! Quite a discovery you made there!
-
I think you will need to run most of it again. And then some. This is what I would have done. I assume you run XP Home:
1. Run CCleaner and reboot. The last download link on this page: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds
2. Run the free Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware quick scan. Link: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
3. Run chkdsk again. Copy and paste this into "Run": CHKDSK C: /f/r
4. Run scannow. Copy and paste this into "Run": sfc /scannow. Reboot when the little progress bar disappears.
5. Run the free Windows Live OneCare online scanner. Full scan. (Note that there's a special link for Vista users.) Link: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm?mkt=en-us. Reboot.
6. Visit Microsoft Update. Make sure to click the Custom button. NOT Express. Install whatever updates recommended
7. Install and run Secunia PSI - remember to activate Advanced. Install recommended updates. Reboot. Link: http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/
8. Open Defraggler -> Help -> About. Check that you have the latest version 1.14.159. Update Defraggler if not. Link: http://www.piriform.com/defraggler
9. Defrag freespace. Open Defraggler -> Action -> Advanced -> Defrag Freespace
10. Run Defraggler's analyze and post back here. Tell us the result.
I know this is a lot. But all systems need a "spring cleaning" at least twice a year anyway.
-
Then just keep clicking the "Start update" link inside Avira's GUI - the link is sitting on Avira's front page. Do it every 10 minutes. It will update eventually. And take it easy...
-
When I used Avira I usually managed to get the update through by just keep clicking the "Start update" link in Avira's GUI. I had Avira open - waiting in the Taskbar. Up and down, up and down, trying and trying. Always came through after a while. As I said: it only once a year or so.
Try again. Europe and the US is sleeping. Less run on the servers now. Click "Start update" - give it a go...
-
No, you can't say that an issue that only occurs once a year is normal for Avira. Be reasonable.
You could also update it yourself. You do not have to sit and wait for Avira to do it for you. Here's how: http://www.avira.com/en/support/kbdetails.php?id=95
-
No, Avira's folks are not playing tricks on you. The freeware is given to us under the condition that we understand that the paying customers have first priority. Once or twice a year this happens. It always occurs when Avira is rolling out major updates to the premium subscribers. It's not a sales tactic. And the phenomenon is actually widely accepted. After all - it is freeware.

Have patience - it almost over. Things will be fine soon.
From Avira TechBlog:
Another huge Update leading to delaysSeptember 30, 2009, 7:51 am We are currently delivering another huge update to our clients. This leads to the situation that users of the free Avira AntiVir Personal have some issues getting their updates fast. The situation should get better today or tomorrow. We hope that we have our improved, faster system up and running for the next big update so that this situation won?t come up again! Please be patient ? the update will be over soon! By the way, as usual, users of Avira AntiVir Premium, Avira Premium Security Suite and the Professional products are not affected ? they have dedicated download servers and reserved bandwidth available.Dirk KnopTechnical EditorSource: http://techblog.avira.com/en/

No. Sounds strange. Please run CCleaner or some other cleaner and then a quick defrag with Defraggler. Should be a matter of minutes. Still same result?
CCleaner - the last download link on this page: http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds

You should upgrade to IE8. It's better security-wise. Really. Did Dell say that IE8 would not run on your PC?
Look here what Google made: Internet Explorer 8 optimized for Google. Link: http://www.google.com/toolbar/ie8/
-
The fastest browser ever on my XP Home was Safari for Windows. I don't have it at the moment but it impressed. However some security issues developed at the time and Safari was warned against. So I uninstalled it. Haven't tested it lately. I run IE8 now. But it hangs a bit...
-
Me too. And PC Magazine. And Neowin: http://www.neowin.net/
-
Thanks! I did know Raymond but the other one is new to me.
-
In general:
Yes, i is amazing that the system requirements are so well hidden on some sites. And if they are there, they don't mention if 64-bit is supported. I sometimes write them an email. And I did manage to get improvements on a couple of occasions. They put the information up om their sites.
In CCleaners case I just couldn't find it and with no serch function there....
-
I find those 2 freewares from Microsoft almost a wonder.
-
I try to follow the news about security, freeware, tricks, Windows, updates and things like that. I read blogs, magazines and other websites. But I would like to expand my collection of bookmarks and links. What are the best sites? Which sites do you read? Recommendations, please!
Edit: Here's a summery of the posts below - and then some:
OBS: The internet is under malware attack constantly. These sites were clean when they were added. But this can change. So as always: be careful, use a firewall and updated anti-malware programs. Use a link scanner such as WOT, AVG Link Scanner, Finjan SecureBrowsing or SiteAdvisor.

Yes. Those folk are really a resource. Microsoft themselves refer to that forum from their official pages.

Yep. They all roll out new versions these days. And more ahead. It's Windows 7 that's spooking around behind the scenes. The all try to be prepared for the 22th of October.
