    I tried Linux a a while back and liked it but I could never get it to detect my modem. The explanation I was given (if I remember correctly) was that Winmodems were actually controlled by software that was proprietary to Microsoft and M$ was unwilling to share.

     

    Has that been fixed?

     

    What version fo Linux do you recommend? I was using Suse but it was taking me awhile to get the hang of it.

    use Windows's User Manager. That way it's more safer and nothing bad happens to your comp :).

     

    Administrator you cant delete, All Users you should keep(a lot of program installers use All Users/Directory to install a program on all users).

     

     

     

     

    Where can I find that? If it's in Control Panel, it just shows the one user.

    Another Strange Problem

    Hello-

     

    I've been having a lot of problems with my startup and I recently noticed I have a Logoff option in my Start box which I don't think I had before although maybe I just didn't notice it. Anyway, I can Logoff "Dave" and then "Switch User" to "Dave." I can find no difference between the two Logons. I am and always have been the only user of this PC. Is this normal? This is what I have in explore:

    Can I safely delete any of these users? Dave.DAVE-SKZW26X5BR is the one that has the majority of the programs, etc. that I use. There are a few programs I use listed under the other users. Can I cut and paste them into Dave.DAVE-SK___? There is only one user listed in Users in Control Panel and the Guest Account is turned off.

     

    Let me know if additional info is needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Did you notice that on January 1st the images on your monitor suddenly became much more distinct allowing you to see even the tiniest details more easily and clearly than ever before?

    Howdy-

     

    This ? may be for englishmen. Does HostMan have to be running i.e. in the notification tray? Since it's basically just a file, I don't let it run because the 4% CPU it needs sometime bogs down my ancient, decrepit computer. I'm guessing it's there to start faster if you want to modify the file.

     

    Definite question for englishmen- Did you ever get your modem working OK?

     

    Whenever I need a laugh I play that Underground Song although I did need to look up the definition of w**nker :o

    Did that guy just decide " I would like to go to jail today"? It looks intentional to me, but I dont get why they would do that. Maybe they lost control but the one thing I know for sure is that cop is very lucky.

    Hello all-

     

    I read about this the other day and thought it sounded kind of cool but didn't think it was something I needed. It's called the "Gesture Glove."

     

    Then I realized there is one gesture I use once in a while I wish the computer could understand... :unsure:

    Edit: Does anyone know of app i can type in a url and it displays the ip address for that url.

     

    This link is for a site that will do this. The site also offers some other features such as packet route tracing. It includes a link to an app which unfortunately isn't free but the online tool returns quite a bit of info at no charge.

    Hi-

     

    Had a couple more thoughts-

     

    Have you checked for an IRQ conflict? You can check in Device Manager by clicking on View and then Resources By Type.

     

    Is your old modem completely uninstalled? I found out the hard way you have to delete the old modem in both Device Manager AND Phone and Modem Settings in Control Panel.

     

    I read somewhere that if your power supply is marginal it can cause the modem to disconnect when another device powers up. This doesn't seem to apply in your case.

     

    Also saw somewhere that this can be caused by an application or service trying to access the modem, such as e-mail set to send and receive on a fixed achedule.

     

    Did the modem come with an installation CD? Apparently it includes a diagnostic program.

     

    Could your ISP be timing you out? Obviously this probably isn't it since it happens while you're downloading, and didn't happen with the old modem. Netzero sometimes disconnects me even when I'm doing something online, but I'm pretty sure that's a Netzero issue.

     

    Could the modem itself be defective? Unlikely, but not unheard of. I found this out the hard way as well.

     

    Finally, have you tried carefully removing the modem, throwing it against the wall and then jumping up and down on it 10 or 20 times? Won't help the connection issue but may make you feel better, at least for a couple minutes or so.

     

    I realize you've probably considered all these issues and ruled them out, but just in case you haven't I thought I'd mention them.

    I don't know. I havent used the version without the ads yet but it is supposed to be really good. Some think it might even be better. I will have a better judgement of it in a couple of days.  Why not get it now though while its free? It usually costs $20-$30.

    It looks like New Orleans wasn't hit as hard as first feared but still a huge and destructive storm anyway. The news just said a sheriff in Mississippi has confirmed 50 deaths in his county alone (I didn't hear which one). I imagine we won't know all the details for days or even weeks to come.

     

    Hope for the best...
