  1. Hi,

Today after I analyzed adnd defragged files on completion I got a message saying not all files were defragged.

When I highlighted those 3 files that could not be defragged I attempted to defrag them again and still no luck.

The 3 files that can't be defragged are:

    1. avgcfg.log

    2. avgcore.log

    3. avgns.log

Since these files are part of AVG 8.0 I tried disabling the antivirus and see if I could defrag the 3 files than but still not defraggin them.

This is with the latest version of Defraggler.

Any idea why thanks in advance.

  2. Just delete the entries in the .ini file ;)

    Keith

Thanks Keith, I thought it was that simple after looking inside the file winapp2 but since I never did this before I thought I would get a confirmation.

    Better safe than sorry.

  3. Today I installed the winapp2 zip file.

After opening CCleaner and checking the application list for the * programs available I noticed 3 items in the list that I already had with program instalation.

    The 3 programs are:

    1. MS Office Picture Manager and * MS Office Picture Manager.

    2. Imgburn and * Imgburn.

    3. Adobe Flash Player and * Adobe Flash Player.

Since all 3 programs with * already come wiht CCleaner instalation is there a way to modify the winapp2 file to remove the extra * programs from shoing on CCleaner when opened.

  4. Hello The Don,

Is this the error code that you get by any chance? and does it happen at startup before you click anything?

    error Signature

    Appname : defraggler.exe AppVer : 1.6.2.118 ModName : defraggler.exe

    ModVer : 1.6.0.118 Offset : 0009c1b1

If so, I think this could be the same issue that some others of us are having and it could be helpful in pinpointing the problem.

    Thank you,

    Bassmanadam

    Hi Bassmanadam,

I think you miss read my reply. I was stating that I did install the Net Framework 3.5 too but that Defraggler 1.06 still works normal for me.

I also wanted to let you know that it works on my system being a XP SP3 and just was asking if your system was maybe a Vista.

Sorry if my comment was not well explained for you.

  5. Hi ! After windows upadting/installing Netframework 3.5 and corresponding Hotfix defraggler 1.06.118 stops working. Any advice to make a workaround instead of having a system restore or unstalling the updates? Thanks.

I installed the Net Framework 3.5 too and Defraggler 1.06 still works.

I have Windows XP SP3. Do you have Vista perhaps?

Is anyone else having this problem after installing Net Framework 3.5?

  6. Yes, I do understand that. Under Vista though it just doesn't seem to ever speed up as it does under XP. XP is pretty fast to defrag on anything that isn't underpowered, but on Vista, even on powerful machines the defrag runs slowly. This does not really seem to be impacted (At least in my experience) on running Defraggler multiple times. My computer has an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5 Ghz processor with 4 GB's of RAM and if I set Defraggler to run before I go to bed and wake up in the morning it is still not done. In fact, it is usually somewhere in the 30% area. Additionally, the (very well documented) Restore Point issue under Vista I think also adds to the lengthy scan times. With larger hard drives the amount of space allocated to Restore Points can be quite large, so the more Defraggler runs, the more Restore Point data it has to move around and manipulate (Though it can't defrag these files).

I realize that the Restore Point issue is a Windows Vista thing, but I have noticed that Windows Vista "flags" Defraggler as being a potential issue, but does not flag CCleaner. This perplexes me a bit. To Windows they should just be two .exe's... What is handled differently in the install for Defraggler that CCleaner's installer doesn't do, or does differently? This is why I think that there must be a way around this issue with Windows Vista. Because the Vista Defragmentation Tool (Though horrid) doesn't create these Restore Points, so there must be some sort of approach / call that bypasses the excessive Restore Point creation.

I'm not sure what can be done for speed... The Windows Vista Defragmentation Tool isn't fast either, but it is faster than Defraggler (At least in my experience). Of course, having run the Windows Vista Defragmentation Tool I'm not convinced that it actually does anything... LOL That sets Defraggler apart from the built in tools...

Here is a suggestion for Vista users for a more efficient and speedy defragging with Defraggler:

First I would only suggest this to users of Defraggler who backup there registry with ERUNT or have a stable running computer so that they can disable and re-enable system restore since this will help.

    1. If you are sure your computer has been running ok for several days disable system restore.

    2. Defrag empty space (allow fragments)

    3. Than analyze your drive and defrag the files that need to be defragged since defragging empty space (allow fragments) will creat some files to be fragmented.

    4. Now go back and re-enable system restore and make a new restore point.

Note: This may still take some time but since system restore is disabled it will not shrink your free space and will not take as long.

But keep in mind this will still take some time for the first time but since you don't need to defrag your full drive all the times you can just defrag files after analyzing your drive like in step 3. This will be fast since only files that are needed to be defragged will be defragged and will also keep your system performance in shape.

  7. I just wanted to say first that I love Defraggler just as much as you do! I think this issue was discussed in another thread if I am not mistaken. But it seems as though defragging the free space, at least in XP creates some fragmentation and the best option would be to defrag the files (not the entire drive) after you defrag the free space. Can anyone back me up on this one?

I usually defrag only files daily to keep my drive performance good. At times only when my drive has alot of free space in between blue blocks I defrag free space (allow fragments) and than just defrag the files that need to be defragged. I don't defrag the whole drive again. It is not needed.

  8. When using the "Move large files to end of drive" Defraggler is going 100% cpu.

The defrag process pretty much halts.

Until Defraggler finds a big file it wants to move it operates OK.

However, the minute it gets to a nice, big ISO file or some such thing, the cpu goes 100% and the defrag process grinds to a hault.

This is on XP SP3 with Defraggler 1.6.0.118

I too find Defraggler 1.6.0.118 with Windows XP SP3 uses more CPU resources.

  9. Yeah I have, If I click the one that says "allow fragmentation" it compacts but leaves alot of RED (fragments). If I choose the other It becomes like the picture.

I think it would be worth trying this: ... After you defrag free space allowing defragmentation you should analyze drive and than go to View Files and check them all and than right click and defrag all checked files. It should fix the problem.

  10. OK, great.

BTW, by just looking at DeFraggler's Analysis,

can one know which particular file or files need defragging?

I ask this because there are PCs that I need to manage

but I don't use, so I am not familiar with all the files the user uses.

    Than you.

    Hi DeeDee2

Yes you can find out which files need defragging. After you analyze drive click on View Files and it will show you a list of files that need defragging.

Than either tick all of them or just highlight them all and than defrag all ticked or all highlighted. You can also click on the blocks once analyzed to learn more about what's going on with your drive.

  11. C2D 2.9G here.

Analyze is ok, but defrag does a significant slow down!!

    Choose "background" priority.

I want to clearify my statement - The defraggler analyzing works fine same as usual but while in interactive mode where I can click a block to get more info on is where the computer does not seem stable (jitterey)

I have tried the option in settings to background in Priority and it seems a little better however when I close defraggler and than reopen the option background is set back to normal priority. It does not stay to the option I choose.

  12. Hi Davey,

    The file that changed was:

    C:\\Windows\System32\Config\Software

This occurred after installing Window Updates and it was the only time I found fragments with Sysinternals.

    Hey Davey,

I thought you might be interested in knowing that today after installing a windows update (Microsoft Outlook 2007 junk filter) I noticed the pageDefrag had 3 items with 2 fragments.

The 3 items with 2 fragments were:

    1. C\Windows\System 32\Config\Default

    2. C\Windows\System 32\Config\Software

    3. C\Windows\System 32\Config\System

So I guess Dfefraggler is able to defrag page files.or at least soemtimes.

  13. wow thx for that, ive set CCleaner to run auto and forget about it.

I like the new documentation however I noticed some info missing for Defraggler. There is no description on Defrag freespace and Defrag Freespace (allow defragment) in the Advanced menu via the the General tab.

  14. Today for the first time I decided to use defraggler for optimazation by putting all large files larger than 50 MB at end of disk since I have alot of movie files.

So doing so the large files successfully were put at end of disk though after the job was finished I had alot of free space in between blocks so I than had to defrag all free space and than defrag files after analyzing drive. Is this normal to have to do all these steps.

  15. Today I installed the new version of Defraggler and it looks great but after trying it by analyzing drive and during I was looking at the map drive the computer is jittery like it is taking more cpu. Never noticed this before with older versions.

Any idea or does the new version take more cpu process.

I have 2 GB of RAM with duo 2 core and 2.3 GHZ process.

  16. Yes, of course you can but all the files released by CCleaner were still fragmented when they were released.

By Defraggling first, then larger free spaces become available after running CCleaner.

More larger free spaces available means less chance of creating more and more fragmented files.

    :) davey

    Hi Davey,

Your suggestion about using defraggler prior to CCleaner makes sense to me. The reason I say this because I have always known that defragmenting is good to do before installing large softwares so that things cann run smoother and than it is also a good idea to do it after all instalations. So I usually do defrag only files before CCleaner and after if I have deleted a large amount of data.

I also do a full defragment once in a while or sometimes just defrag free space when I have done alot of deleting and installing.

My only question though is if I defrag all files why would I need to defrag only folders? Isn't files from folders too?

  17.

Hi I am new, so forgive any mistakes

I had AVG anti spyware which they are dumping, and got so used to the shredder feature

When CC Cleaner deletes files in the recycle bin, are they just deleted or shredded?

A very Happy and Healthy New Year to all

    katie

    Hi Katie,

Welcome to the forums, when sending files to recycle bin with CCleaner they are just being deleted not shredded.

  18. Hi Davey

Thank you for reply,of course it did not even cross my mind to work with two different defraggers at the same time, my question was based on the fact that different defraggers use different algorithms

and therefore a possible conflict. I also do not use any auto start programs except security programs.

    Regards

    Eli

Hey Davey you say that you use Defraggler, Windows Disk Defragmenter and JkDefrag is there a purpose for each one you use.

I know that you use Defraggler like I do by analyzing disk and than just defragging files that need it by right clicking. However I heard alot of good things about JKDefrag but according to you is there a reason why you use this too for any other purpose other than Defraggler. In other words are you using these 3 programs for different purposes. i hope I made myself clear.

  19. I always read where if you have too many Startup programs running at the same time, it can slow down your performance. I am just afraid I will take out the wrong one. Would somebody be able to review what is on mine and make a recommendation of what I could disable without taking out something I need.

    Hi Les

From looking at your startup I can see alot of programs that are not needed at startup because they are not needed at all time and if you do need it just go to the program and launch it. However you should keep always on startup programs such as Windows Defender, Antivirus, Antispyware, and Firewalls. As for the rest of the programs I can not give you a simple answer since it would be up to you if you wish to have the program started when computer boots. However I understand you by when you say you don't know what some of these programs mean so the best way to make a decision is to go to a site like http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php and do a search and make your own decision whether to keep on startup or not If you can't find some on that web site there is many others just google it and get answers.

I also leave auto updating programs disabled except for Antiviruuses, Antispywares, and Firewall and most important I disable Windows Autoupdate I set the option to warn me if I want to install updates.

Remember whenever you disable a program from startup you can always go and enable it back.

  20. Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knows if it is good to check the option in the settings of the latest version of Defraggler to move large files to end of disk.

Also if I were to choose this option will this only take affect when defragging the whole drive.

    Thanks in advance.

Well I guess until we don't have the help documents and fully understand how Defraggler works I will be using it only for defragging files and folders with a right mouse click after analyzing drive. This for me is safe, quick, and know that works fine.

  22. Hello,

Not as far as I know.

PageDefrag does many system files that are not available when Windows is running.

Your report is interesting. I hope the Devs respond.

Which file was the file that changed after running Defraggler ?

    When did this occur ?

    :) davey

    Hi Davey,

    The file that changed was:

    C:\\Windows\System32\Config\Software
