  1. Alright, alright, I know most of you are past college, but some of us are still learnin' :o. What's everyone taking this semester and where are you attending?

I'm taking a few programming classes (CIS 310/350), Linear Algebra (MATH 227), a technical writing class (COMP 270) and an intro to philosophy class (PHIL 130). Hope the school year brings joy :o. Edit: I'm taking my classes at the University of Michigan.

  2. AJ please, you've got me in pain here.

When I said you should be able to do that standing on your head, I meant having late nights and then bouncing back again the next morning.

I think we have a slight case of "lost in translation". 1%20(51).gif

    Cheers everyone.

  3. I personally don't use either, actively. If you're going to scan regularly anyway (which you should!), then active protection is really not a high priority. Active protection really should be for people who have kids that they can't keep their eyes on....

  4. Passive = not active or operating, just like what SpywareBlaster does to block stuff.

Active = producing or involving action or movement, just like an anti-virus resident shield.

The end result is that you don't consume memory with passive protection :).

So no one has any other ways? Blah :P.

Totally different Tom, a HOSTS file redirects 100's of the ads that normally adorn most sites you visit to I think, a dead end. All you get is a blank space in its place.

Actually, what you would get is a message in place of every ad saying something like "cannot find server", which is why you use that little trick in Firefox to prevent that. Don't know about IE, never use it.

There's a really good and clear explanation of the HOSTS file here, which is well worth reading in conjunction with Jago's post.

If you download the MVPS HOSTS file, open it with notepad, and see the list of what it blocks.

Why don't you give the HOSTS a try Tom, and if you've any more queries, ask.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the Firefox toggle! And a little info... the HOSTS file redirects the ads to the local machine that sent them (127.0.0.1)! So aside from protecting your computer, you waste their bandwidth, .

  5. I'm not really familiar with these. Can anyone give me a simple explanation as to how a "MVPS.org HOSTS File" works, what it really does and how easy (or difficult) it is to install. Once installed, is it fairly "automatic" -- or is it something that needs to be managed manually?

Wikipedia -- "The hosts file is a computer file used to store information on where to find a node on a computer network. This file maps hostnames to IP addresses. The hosts file is used as a supplement to (or instead of) the domain name system on networks of varying sizes. This file is (unlike DNS) under the control of the user who is using the computer."

What I take that as, the hosts file blocks unwanted network connections by misdirecting them.

  6. Whew! As soon as I read this, I got worried that I had actually deleted it, cos I remember I was about to. I'm glad that i didnt go through with it lol  . I got all 3 .NET frameworks going, so its all good.

You have .NET 1.1 and 2.0 and 3.0?

I'm just curious, why did you install 3.0?

  7. Hello,

New user, thank you for the support/product (CCleaner), I think its great!! I make my 15/13 Y/O daughter and son respectively run it on both computers (all accounts) weekly, and I can see a noticable difference afterward!! The thing is, since I first started using the 4600 it has always been slow to respond/download/upload/ with just about any application. Also, since I first used it, the screen flickers. Now I read in another mag. recently that the 4600's were crap and I can believe that statement!! Actually it was a Xmas gift for my son and when I helped him set it up on Xmas day and we wound up having to return it because of the power!! Had I known then what I know now...... Anyway, do the symptoms point in any direction, and if it is power could buying and installing a new power system help? Thank you for reading/responding.

Hi chiliwarrior, and welcome back to the forums :). Your problems don't sound at all like a faulty power supply (which is what the magazine article was referencing). If the power supply (PSU) were failing or was simply inadequate, you'd have a much more serious problem on your hands. Though OEMs (such as Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony, and the like) do use cheaper parts to save costs, a power supply will 'let you know' when something has gone awry.

If you want to see a performance increase out of your computer you have several options....

Firstly, how many programs are running? Open up the task manager (right click on the start bar and select task manager) and look in the bottom-left corner. How many processes does it say are running? These things eat up memory, which your computer uses to carry out its tasks. Active antivirus/antispyware programs also take up memory.

Secondly, have you posted a HijackThis! log here recently? Malware can slow down a computer considerably.

Third, what are the specifications of your computer? If you don't know, you can use PC Wizard 2007 to find out: http://www.cpuid.org/download/pcw2007_v173.exe

Let me know and I'll see what we can do to help.

  8. Alright guys, I'm a big fan of 'low-resource' applications, and I can't stand the thought of running any programs in the background, so I often rely on passive protection from a modified HOSTS file, Filterset.G, Spybot S&D's Immunize feature, and SpywareBlaster.

What are some other methods that I'm missing?

  9. I'd throw that review into the gutter. PC World is biased and this review is completely unfounded. Something odd I've always noticed is that more 'mainstream' media often praises Spyware Doctor, but never seems to legitimate their claims. AVG AS, Webroot Spysweeper, and Spybot S&D are all better products. There's a reason why our community embraces the programs we do :).

  10. What's the point of this? Somehow I'm a one star, and it just seems like it's given someone an opportunity to antagonize me when I haven't been mean to anybody. I don't want to visit here if I don't feel, uh, welcome.

    Just wondering.

  11. Not sure how this turned into a test-drive of Linux, but let me give you the 101: It's an Operating System, and does require installation. It's not like Windows in a lot of senses, and can be a little odd to get used to (though windows managers like XFCE, GNOME, and KDE are very user-friendly).

  12. Well stay with windows XP until Vista has sp1 out

Why? Vista is a crippled operating system, SP1 or not. It's defective by design. Vista users seeking all the incompatibility and sluggishness should go download an alpha release of a Linux distro and put KDE on it (though to be honest KDE is getting faster).
