Could be a faulty power supply, though good luck dealing with any components in a laptop, they're really the consumer nightmare .
Did it just *happen*, with no precursor incident? No reason at all for occurring? I doubt the motherboard is at fault in this case.
-
I'm pretty sure this only occurs under load at higher temperatures, so I think it's a result of expansion of *something*.
Anyway, I have been having this problem with my side panel rattling as a result of some fan vibrating irregularly. I haven't cleaned it off with compressed air yet, but I'm going to try that first. I'm pretty sure it's my CPU fan that's causing the vibrations.
If my CPU fan is causing the vibrations, I think instead of replacing just the fan, I'll go 100% aftermarket (XP-90).
There's a question in here somewhere, I just don't know what.

Your system specs seem o.k. to me with one exception the processor at 1.66 Ghz but that's just me and I would have went with at least a 2.8 Ghz w/Multi-Threading if using an Intel P4. And also Windows XP Pro.

Since when was clock speed a measure of performance? The Conroes, which he has if I'm not mistaken, have low clock speeds and outperform AMD's cream of the crop in every corner.

Prop it up on Legos.

Oftentimes I find that when I check for errors, I get some registry value that looks suspect (with an ActiveX/COM thing in it, etc). Half the time, if I scan with AVG Antispyware (ewido), it picks up the registry value too.

I don't believe you can change file systems and keep data intact.

I started using OpenDNS in early October because my ISP's DNS were completely rediculous - redirecting me to this "Earthlink-help" page. I didn't even have Earthlink!
Anyway, it works pretty well.

Has anyone heard about these? How do they affect performance?
I was considering buying a 36Gb one with the 16MB cache, and then getting a ~300GB slave drive, just to see the difference in performance .

That will work if you don't accidently visit any dodgy sites and keep Windows updated and if you're the only user of your system. However running without active antivirus isn't something for all systems especially multi-user systems as there's no way of knowing what other people do on a system, or what websites they visit - and remember evil sites like myspace.com which infected people via an ad banner (if I'm remembering correctly).
Well I don't browse/use MySpace (or any other social networking site), I stick to private bittorrent networks (which accounts for porn as well), and I use Firefox.
I do occasionally use online scanners, but only when something suspect happens (like that Earthlink baloney I posted in Spyware Hell - HJT).
I suppose I'm my greatest antivirus .

Right now it's probably Augury - Beatus, only because I really like the song...
All senses out to the debauchery,
He will come secreting Eucharist again
Black robe, the veiled ogre, prayed his way to the fresh meat
For the shepherd also dines on lamb and he bends for the frail and tender.
Nightly taught in vice, housebroken with virtue, tamed, humiliated,
To God the souls, but the flesh he'll takes care of...
Magister, Magister, dolorae inferis
Magister, Magister, in caudae venenum est
Magister, Magister, caro mea vere est cibus.
Torrente voluptatis, tuae potabis eos
(He stalks the corridors, question which room he'll sneak in
Shivering puppies' cringe, praying their turn has not come)
Et clamor meus ad Te veniat
Pulling sheets overhead in hopes to be spared
Exaudi meam, miserere nobis
Whence the evening came, he brands his cattle for life
After eons it is time to go
All of them empty shells walking, overused toys
To nowhere they march, martyrs of lust
In the making, more martyrs of lust
Until guns blow or creaking ropes swing
Beatified carrions in betrayed faith

Other really awesome stuff for lyrics are Portal, Andrew W Bordoni, Ryan Formato, Porcupine Tree, Agalloch, etc.

I use a hardware firewall and only online scanners. No active antivirus, because I can't think of a time when I've ever caught anything (tried eTrust, Nod32, and Kaspersky).

Has Netgear actually started to make decent routers? I have an older Netgear and it has always been crap.

I use Windows for Guild Wars, once I get it working in Cedega then I'll be in Dapper heaven.

DeadAIM, Aimutation are also better than AIM - though I use Trillian.

Yup. For me though it's mostly the Final Fantasy soundtracks which in reality could fit right inside a huge budget movie.
Like I said it's difficult for me not to like it being I've always had a gaming console since the first Atari I had (it's been so long I don't even remember the name of that Atari console) however I do remember when I got a Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1985 and played the hell of Namco's Pacman (em ghosts are tasty). Too bad Ms Pacman was fat, which could explain why Pacman had a thing for eating ghosts.
Hehe, I went to the Dear Friends concert, which was the Detroit Symphony Orchestra performing the music of Final Fantasy. God it was so awesome. People were hyperventilating with excitement, lol.

Probably the afformentioned.

It is to my knowledge that when you delete something (not send it to the Recycle Bin), it's not actually removed from your hard drive, but rather marked for overwrite, so it's seen as free space. I've heard there are programs that can actually delete files from your PC, and it would be cool if CCleaner noted these files that were considered free space and actually deleted them.

Hey rridgely, dont' dig on the genre =[.
I'm all about progressive / speed / symphonic / melodic / conceptual metal.
Ayreon, The Butterfly Effect, Concerto Moon, Devin Townsend, Dragonforce, Dream Theater, Falconer, Lacuna Coil, Redemption, Symphony X, (I appreciate whoever mentioned Savatage earlier, $).
Anything that has K. James Labrie in it - Frameshift, Fates Warning - the man is a god.
Mainstream stuff: Anti-flag, Atomic Numbers, Bush, Black Sabbath, Cream, DOors, Godsmack, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Megadeth, NIN, Ozzy, A Perfect Circle, Pink Floyd, Rober Plant & The Strange Sensation, Rush.
I'm also down with Alan Parsons, because he's a genius.

Wow, didn't mean to spark a debate =]

I'm treating myself to 400$ worth of hardware at the end of February (or earlier, but as it stands now...), and I want to buy a new motherboard, processor, and video card.
Now, I'm currently running a socket 478 motherboard, intel celeron d (2.53ghz), 2x512mb ram (pc3200), nvidia fx5500. I don't feel the need to get any more memory at the moment, but I do want a third or fourth slot so if I wish, I can add more in the future. I also want to rid myself of a socket that processors won't come out for, so no more socket 478. If I'm making the same mistake with Socket 939, do tell.
I don't like the temperatures that the Prescotts run at, so I looked into AMD. Here's what I came up with (just around my budget).
Vid Card: Sapphire Radeon X800 PRO
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+
MOBO: Biostar Geforce 6100 Socket 939, PCI-ex16, PC 3200 (4 slots)
Any suggestions / better deals? I'm open to the whole, "If you're going to get this, get this instead."

Could we at least, in the settings, be able to choose, "Hide Windows Hotfixes and Security Updates"?
Case vibrating...

Here's a clip of the vibrations. Cleaning it didn't help.
Any ideas?
