  1. I believe that those are trojans. Try a scan with ewido to see if it finds them as well. http://www.ewido.net/en/

Wait to see what Tarun or DjLizard say but I personally would remove those. If ewido finds them than I would deffinately remove them. Also remember to update ewido before you scan with it.

    Did that, nothing found

    Upload them to here:  http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Did it again for the 2nd time , nothing found.

I scanned again with a squared this evening. Guess...this time nothing found. I'm truly puzzled. The only thing I did last nite was to run my regular Tarun's anti-malware package, that's it, nothing else.

Now, nothing found with a squared.

I'm delighted but also very puzzled, how "backdoor" can just disappear ?

    Anybody has any clue ?

    Steve

  2. Did my regular scanning with online trend micro virus scan, then with avast. Nothing surfaced, all OK.

Then scanned with a squared. Got 2 items as malware.

    Filename:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\AS-Exp2.ocx

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\AS-IFce1.ocx

    Diagnosis:

    Backdoor.MSWord.Nutshell

    Backdoor.MSWord.Nutshell

    This time I didn't delete anything [ if you remember,I had a bad experience b4, http://forum.CCleaner.com/index.php?showtopic=1426&hl= ]

Wondering if those are false positives.

    Cheers

  3. I wanted to install Thunderbird, since it is highly recommended in this forum.

However, when I did a search in this forum, I noted some have problem running Thunderbird properly.

Currently I'm using Outlook Express, my plan is to install T/Bird & remove OE for good.

    Instructions appreciated.

  4. I installed Norton AntiVirus 2002 and it kicks ass!  B)

I used that b4. It didn't do a good job. Switched to AVG 2 years ago, AVG was OK,

but now I find Avast is better.

As agumon asked you "why?". I'm curious as well, because in this forum almost everyone dislike norton( except norton corporate edition )

  5. 38, I feel old now, I am the oldest at the moment. :(

Hey Capman don't feel bad. I'm 38 too.

It's important too feel & think young. ;)

We 've got a lot things to enjoy in life.

I'm happy to be part of this wonderful forum.

Thank you guys & gals ( are there any gals? )

  6. DJ, while you were away ( maybe asleep ), Twisted Metal, sent me a copy of "explorer.exe" thru e-mail & guided me what to do.

Everything seems to be ok now. Thanks Twisted Metal & DJ, you guys are great. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have gone this far, without you guys.

    I have several questions tho:-

    1) I have Avast, how can this "bagle" get into my pc. I suspect it is from an e-mail. Am I right?

    2) How to be really sure everything is really back to normal, I saw some settings were changed in my pc...is there anything to be concerned about?

    3) How can I prevent this from happening again to my pc. For your note, I have Tarun's malware package in my pc, besides that I have MSAS.

    4) Is it safe to run CCleaner for issues....scanning shows many items to delete.

Thank you very much once again to both of you.

Steve :) (my smile is back)

P/S - Now I know why Eldmannen gets banged every now & then in this forum.

  7. * Control+shift+escape (or control+alt+delete) - may bring up task manager.  If it does, click File>New Task (Run...), and type 'explorer.exe' in the box, and hit OK.  If everything comes back, then you possibly need to reset Windows' "shell=" parameter.  I think Hijack This! might notice it and let you fix it -- not sure.  If you can get explorer.exe running again, we'll investigate further.

Hi, I did the above ( I took time off to go back for awhile). Bad news it says windows cannot find"explorer.exe" etc etc.

I searched for my XP CD, I think I lost it when I shifted house recently.

What can I do now?? BTW, mine is not a branded pc

Just curious , can't I do anything with restore point I have in my pc

and with last Erunt back up I have? Are they only for registry back up ?

Boy oh boy, what a day!.........

Another thought, maybe I can download from the net on a different pc & install in my pc......or someone can send it to me by e-mail..... looks like I'm getting desperate, sorry guys

    Steve

  8. There's nothing wrong with a-squared (I use their hijack-free product all the time)... it's actually what bagle did that caused the damage.

When your system boots to the no-desktop situation, try the following:

    * Control+shift+escape (or control+alt+delete) - may bring up task manager.  If it does, click File>New Task (Run...), and type 'explorer.exe' in the box, and hit OK.  If everything comes back, then you possibly need to reset Windows' "shell=" parameter.  I think Hijack This! might notice it and let you fix it -- not sure.  If you can get explorer.exe running again, we'll investigate further.

If the above didn't work, you'll have to reinstall Windows on top of itself (no harm will be done, you won't lose anything -- but you have to have your XP CD and your product key handy.  If you are using a name-brand computer (HP, Compaq, Dell, etc) and don't have an XP CD, let me know and we'll go from there).

DJ, thanks for the fast reply. I'm at office now. I will go back home this evening & do as you say.

    Keeping my fingers crossed.

    Thanks,

    Steve :)

  9. Hi,

I scanned with a2 trojan scanner, noted 9 malware...some worm called bagle something, so I deleted all of them.

Then, all is gone except my desktop image, no icons, no toolbar, nothing just my desktop image.

I have restore set before with XP and another with ERUNT.

What can I do to save my computer???

    Please help :(

    Steve

P/S - I will never use a2 again. Others reading, please be careful when using a2 trojan scanner.

  10. Sorry for the late reply & thanks for the input.

I restored my computer before the cleaning. Now it is back to as it was.

Removed TuneUp Utilities 2004, RegscrubXP. Will be removing RM soon as it is only a trial version.

Still keeping Regcleaner 4.3....wondering I will ever use it.

I'm a little irritated, becos I don't know which registry cleaner I shud use. The reason being when I first started using my computer several years back. I used to install & removed a lot of softwares......later after learning more about computers here & elsewhere, I decided to clean up what is left behind, but the cleaners I mentioned earlier are not recommended by experienced ppl from here.

So, how do I actually remove those items???

    Steve B)

  11. I've always been a little apprehensive in cleaning the registry.

This time I set a restore point with Erunt & TuneUp Utilities 2004

    and did the following:-

Cleaned invalid entries using Regcleaner 4.3 about 69 items. After reboot, everything still fine, working as usual,no error message. ( there was backup kept as well)

Then accidentally cleaned with TuneUp 2004 ...about 493 invalid registry items. I freaked out.!!! Thank heavens nothing happen. After reboot, computer working fine as usual, no error message.

Then I became a little more adventurous, downloaded regscrubXP....scanned & found 47 items BUT I didn't remove it. Registry Mechanic showing about 60 over items invalid, nothing removed.

My questions is after cleaning with Regcleaner 4.3 & TuneUp Utilities 2004, why there are still more items to be cleaned when scanned with RegscrubXP, RM...this is crazy, looks like I can keep on going & going cleaning items with this scanners!!!

I wonder what Regseeker will give me IF I scanned my PC ???

Can someone please explain this to me. I really don't understand why I keep getting items to delete with different softwares. Can't I just use 1 registry cleaner to do the job?? If not any suggestions please?

  12. Plus it was already stated that the HOSTS problem was solved.

I didn't realise this thread was opened again. Yes the hosts problem is solved.

    Esceha, thanks anyway.

You can do so under the Administrative Tools in Control Panel.

    Will try that tonite
