  1. I really like Malwarebites MBAM and I have a paid subscription for $32.00CAD:

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

I tried a-squared ages ago but it had too many false positives and I do not use Spybot S&D anymore as it only found tracking cookies and its scan takes unbearably too log to run.

I do use Microsoft's Windows Defender manually updated daily because of its monitoring of the HOSTS file and other key operating system files but I wish that its update function would work more reliably.

I also like WinPatrol and I purchased its PLUS update for $29.95US:

I like the comfort of its mascot Scotty's woof alerting me when things are changed on my systems.

    [political rant]

Unfortunately, being on the Internet today has become such a target for the criminal element for their own nefarious purposes.

It is all in the name of gathering the almighty $$$ as it is easy to steal as there is a very long time for them to be brought to justice or even to be caught. [/political rant]

I know many of you have had issues with the Windows 7 Beta site over the last 24 hours. As you may have noticed the download site has been up and running smoothly since this morning. That said, we apologize for the inconvenience that it caused some of you.

Due to an enormous surge in demand, the download experience was not ideal so we listened and took the necessary steps to ensure a good experience. We have clearly heard that many of you want to check out the Windows 7 Beta and, as a result, we have decided remove the initial 2.5 million limit on the public beta for the next two weeks (thru January 24th). During that time you will have access to the beta even if the download number exceeds the 2.5 million unit limit.

I won't help as I don't have the hardware to run it.

  3. The Five Most Dangerous Security Myths

Note: This is the first of five parts. For the next part, click on the link at the bottom.

Still think that today's computer viruses and other malware come from some maladjusted teen out to vandalize your PC to make a name for himself? Think again. The persistent myth is a holdover from days long gone, and it's important to dispel it if you want to know what you're up against - and how to protect yourself.

    Myth #2

Sure, the Web is today's Wild West, with digital guns blazing and no sheriff in sight. But as long as you use a good antivirus program, you're completely safe, right?

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/156375/the_...ths_myth_2.html
    Myth #3

When the Web was young and blink tags abounded, it wasn't hard to avoid the bad stuff online. You could generally tell by looking at a site if it was unsavory or even dangerous, and if you were careful with your surfing and your e-mail, you could generally have gone without antivirus.

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/156376/the_...ths_myth_3.html
    Myth #4

It's a beloved phrase, used by the wise and the lazy alike in response to everything from potential construction to technical work: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/156471/the_...ths_myth_4.html
    Myth #5

You've cleared away most of the web of myth. You know that today's evil viruses and other malware exist to make money, that antivirus alone is no guarantee of safety, and that neither is your own good sense (as important as that is). And you know that some of the best protection comes from keeping your software and your operating system up-to-date.

  4. You should block that URL you went to in everything you have including IE, HOSTS and even input it into Avast's Web Shield as a blocked site.

By the way hpHosts and MVPS HOSTS files have been recently updated.

I'm finally getting around to Ripping my old CDs to my recently rebuilt XP Pro system.

The Best of the Moody Blues, Magic Bus and Who's Next The Who, The best of Eric Clapton and The Seeger Sessions Bruce Springsteen

  5. What I use:

Browser: IE7 with IE7Pro and McAfee SiteAdvisor Plus

email: OE-Quotefix addition to OE with OE Spell

Audio Player: WMP 11 and my Creative Media Sauce on XP Home

    PDF Reader: Foxit

Pictures: Built in pic viewer and Facebook

Cleaning/Tweaking: CCleaner, Dial-a-Fix, Event Log Explorer, JavaRa, PureRa, RegSeeker and TweakNow WinSecret

Security: avast anti virus, HijackThis, hpHosts and MVPS HOSTS files, Malwarebytes MBAM, SpywareBlaster, Windows Defender and WinPatrol PLUS

Misc: Belarc Advisor, System Explorer, ClicKey, CurrPorts and SpeedFan

  6. That's really first class. We just need some Piriform t-shirts for the mods now. :)

I have a WinPatrol golf shirt and a McAfee SiteAdvisor t-shirt so a Pirform t-shirt would be great.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get Y'All to hold a conference here.

  7. Toolkit to Disable Automatic Delivery of Internet Explorer 8

    Brief Description

The Internet Explorer 8 Blocker Toolkit enables IT Administrators to disable automatic delivery of Internet Explorer 8 as a high-priority update via Automatic Updates and the Windows Update and Microsoft Update sites.

Its working quite well on the old PIII though B)

  8. I like SpeedFan:

    What is SpeedFan

SpeedFan allows you to have a deeper view of the status of your computer. Almost every computer includes support for hardware monitoring. Accessing digital temperature sensors is really useful. If you are trying to figure out why your pc hangs when under heavy load or after some hours of usage, SpeedFan might help you to find the real cause. Very often it is a poor power supply, or an improperly installed heatsink that lead to behaviours that we tend to associate with errors from the operating system, but that are not. SpeedFan automatically searches your computer for interesting chips: the hardware monitor chips. SpeedFan can expose voltages, fan speeds and temperatures. On rare occasions, the BIOS doesn't activate such features. SpeedFan tries to enable them as long as this is a safe thing to do. Not only the motherboard is searched, but also some video cards and almost every recent hard disk. SpeedFan can access status info from EIDE, SATA and even SCSI drives, showing, in a consistent way, internal data that can be used to diagnose current and future hard disk failures. This is known as S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology). At the lowest level, SpeedFan is a hardware monitor software that can access digital temperature sensors, but its main feature is that it can control fan speeds according to the temperatures inside your pc, thus reducing noise.

  9. Andavari please don't mention HP printer/scanner uninstalls before I have had a least two coffees.

You need nerves of steel for that

I just had my first morning coffee and posting with my recovered XP Pro system and I would like to give an honorable mention to Norton ( Symantec) even after running their un-install application

  10. :o that's a HUGE inmprovement in piriform labs... congrats for this... now all the softwares must be updated to have a link to join this easily... and for the future translate this info in all the languages that pirform's softwares have... ;)

Note: actually a new tab in the new site for Docs will be very usefull... :P

I think that a new tab is a great idea plus opening a Help dialog when F1 (Help) key is depressed would help as well. ;)

  11. The new modem arrived yesterday and it is working great.

I am now installing the 4 Recovery CDs on the XP Pro system.

It is a miserable day here today with snow and then a nice icing of freezing rain is forecast.

What a wonderful day to spend indoors toasty warm and lots of things to do and places to go on the Internet gathering my favourite goodies.

From what I remember I will have to remove Norton first then SP3 next.

  12. hpHOSTS - UPDATED January 5th, 2009

  13. I have gone through many Microsoft inflicted upgrades and now my poor antiquated hardware is not capable of running Vista so when I get left over money after paying for rent and food I will purchase a new Vista or whatever is the next best thing from Microsoft as I do not want an Apple.

I just want to use the Internet and not be a slave to it and not be another victim of Moore's Law:

I have a 6 year old TV that has great reception and I don't need a HD Wide Screen LCD TV to see the Discovery channel in all its glory for about $500.00

    Mostly cloudy and -5C here.
