  1. 1. I believe they use Windows Installer, therefore you'll probably have to use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility by Microsoft.

    2. Good luck with this process because then you're probably going to have to manually delete the program folder, followed by manually removing the registry program data in HKEY_CURRENT_USERS and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Maybe then it will let you upgrade.

Do note that newer versions of PlexTools which are freeware are really buggy (at least it was when I tested it, it made coaster after coaster of ruined discs). Compared to the older tried and true paid versions and those versions that shipped with purchased Plextor drives the new free version isn't worth the trouble in my opinion which is why I won't ever use PlexTools again - that and they don't really make their own drives anymore.

Thanks for all the tips, Andavari. I have tried to uninstall (or upgrade) version 3.13 for at least a couple of months, but with no success. However, I just downloaded Revo Uninstaller 1.40, and what do you know -- it's now uninstalled -- gone. I don't know what's different about this particular uninstaller app, but what I do know is that PlexTools is gone. Thanks again for the help.

  2. I have an older version of PlexTools Pro XL burning software on my computer which I'd like to get rid of. However, I don't know what ever happened to the installer or the uninstaller. As a result, it won't let me upgrade to a newer version -- and it won't let me uninstall it either. It's just there and I can't do a thing with it (and it doesn't work properly, either)

What can I do? Would I run into serious trouble if I simply deleted the folder in which it's installed-- and then used a registry cleaner to try to clean and tidy things up a little?

  3. It's in the 7-Zip help file how to use it via a batch file, etc., to automatically backup a certain filetype, folder, etc.

    Example:

    "%ProgramFiles%\7-Zip\7z.exe" a "D:\My Backups.7z" "D:\My Backups"

    Thanks, I'll check it out.

  4. Also it's command line program is relatively easy for usage inside of batch files to backup all files in a specific backup folder I've created which makes life super simple and super easy when wanting to burn one backup archive that contains all backups onto a CD-RW.

Andavari . . . I may be asking too much (or maybe I misunderstood what you said), but can you explain the procedure for backing up using 7-ZIP. Is there an Explorer feature, or how do you go about backing up and archiving multiple files? I'd like to backup a bunch of stuff on my hard drive to my external drive -- same stuff on a regular basis.

  5. You can't install it...You just double click kompozer.exe

That's what I assumed, but every time I try, I get an error message which that reads:

    UNABLE TO LOCATE COMPONENT

The application has failed to start because js3250.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

  6. Couple of questions guys.

First, has anyone tried out the new Netveda Firewall? I used to use it a long time ago, but cant remember why i switched. Any good?

Second, is Outpost a good firewall, compared to the others, and is anyone using it?

Third, can you have two firewalls installed, as long as only one is running?

Fourth, if I set everything to BLOCK ALL, can i just allow items that i use on a regular basis, and keep other items from "phoning home" per se and still be able to use the programs?

    Thanks guys!

I use Outpost Pro 2008 (commercial) -- it GREAT!

  7. True.

Same here and i ended up to disable it completely. I got 1536Mb of RAM. I haven't noticed any problems with that.

Basicly disabling pagefile should gain performance, since Windows doesn't have to read and write to hard disk all the time. (I got that info from quite reliable source). But disable pagefile only in case that you got plenty of RAM (1Gig or more).

I have 2GB of RAM. Is there really any performance increase or advantage to disabling PageFile (virtual memory)?

  8. Periodically (at least once a day) I get an Error Message in my Event Manager (System). It's Event ID 7000 (Service Control Manager). It reads: "the ASPI32 service failed to start due to the follow error: The system cannot find the file specified.

That statement is probably correct in that I'm quite sure I don't have an ASPI file/driver installed, and I'm not sure what's even trying to access it. I've always been under the impression the Windows XP did not use the ASPI File layer.

    Any suggestions?

  9. I'm interested in hearing the pros and cons of Eset Smart Security, Outpost Pro 8, and Kaspersky Internet Security 7 - how they compare in terms of protection, resource use, ease of use, etc.

Have used Outpost Firewall Pro for quite a while -- now using the most recent 2008 release. Absolutely love it. Easy to use, fairly easy on resources and GREAT protection. You might want to check out this site Matousec's Firewall Leak Tests to make some comparisons of your own.

  10. The free way:
    • Windows Media Player 10 or newer (includes FhG Pro ACM encoder)

    • BonkEnc (includes the LAME encoder)

    • Exact Audio Copy

    • CDex (includes the LAME encoder)

      ...etc.

Andavari, have you found any of these free rippers have the ability to retain the track marks when ripping an entire CD as a wave file -- or do you have to input them manually -- or use a cue sheet?

  11. Hi all and Happy Thanksgiving to those that live the USA.

I have a question. First there is something wrong with my cd drive at home so I'm not able to play cd's currently. I wanted to download some cd's so I did it at work. Saved them and sent an email to myself with attachements.

At home on my pc I can't even play them, but at work I'm able to open them and play them.

The files are cda files. I want to download the cd's to my iPod. For some reason I can't. Is it possilbe I need to convert the cda's to another format so I can download them to iTunes and then to my iPod?

    Need some help.

    Marc

A "cda" file is not really a file type at all -- it's simply a designation (pointer) that Windows uses to identity audio tracks on CDs. It cannot be copied to a harddrive or emailed -- it must be read and subsequently ripped (in some other format) directly from the CD-ROM.

  12. This is probably an unreasonable request, but I'll ask anyway. I'm having some issues with my Windows XP (Home) machine which necessitates very frequent re-boots. I was wondering if someone with a pretty smooth running XP computer could share their "Services" settings. I'd like to know which are set on Automatic, which are Manual and which are Disabled.

As I said . . . probably a lot to ask (and I know there are variables from machine to machine), but this list of settings might be very helpful. Thanks in advance to anyone who has the time to wade into this.

A lot of good info. Thanks to everyone.

  13. I have an occasional problem with MS helpsvc.exe running for a long period of time and consuming lots of resources. Is this normal? If not, what's the best fix for it? I know it can be set to "manual" or "disable" in Services (services.msc), but is this wise -- or will that just cause other problems?
