However adobe reader speed up makes adobe reader pretty nice.(gets rid of features I dont need and makes it lightning quick)
Which Adobe Reader are you currently using? I recently found Adobe 8.1 Lite -- seems to be adequate for most things, but doesn't have a lot of extra features.

I have a Dell computer that came with Jasc Animation Shop 3, Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album and Jasc Paint Shop Pro 8 pre-installed. I never use these apps -- nor do I ever plan to. I assume they can be uninstalled -- or does Dell somehow use or integrate these into other essential graphics components? Once again, I'm assuming that these are some of Dell's "value added" apps. However, because they collectively represent almost 250MB and I would like to get rid of them if I can safely do that.

I just noticed the following Java components installed on my computer. Can I uninstall the older of each of these two updates (Updates 1 and 4) -- or do they need to be retained because they build on each other and are not complete apps in and of themselves?
J2SE RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT 5.0 UPDATE 1
J2SE RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT 5.0 UPDATE 6
JAVA 6 UPDATE 4
JAVA 6 UPDATE 5

I also use SUPERAntiSpyware and AVG-AS.

From all my reading, Comodo appears to be the best free Firewall. However, I'm not really sure how intrusive it is because I've never used it. I was concerned about the same issues for my daughter that you are with your parents, so I ending up installing SUNBELT KERIO PERSONAL FIREWALL on her computer. When you download it, it's full-featured for 30 days -- at which time some of the features are disabled and it runs strictly in "free" mode thereafter. I'm not sure how good it is, but it's probably better than nothing.

I'm not sure how effective it is, but if you need to do a real quick & dirty scan, you can always try the online scan, NanoScan from Panda. Does its thing in less than a minute. I sure wouldn't rely on this thing exclusively, but might be good for in between "touchups."

I prefer to do a backup of my data files to CD in full form so that I can easily access them from any machine.
Just curious, what program do you use for these data backups -- Acronis?

Full disk imaging is somewhat new to me. I gather from both of your comments (Dennis and JD) that you don't really have a lot of experience with it either. From what I've read, disk imaging sounds like it could be something quite worthwhile, but I'm not sure how you go about it.
I've looked at the Paragon link, but haven't downloaded it yet. I wasn't sure I totally understood what I reading, but it sounds like partitioning is a big part of that app's function. As I'm not really interested in partitioning, are you quite sure it also does full disk image backups as well?
-
Thanks, Dennis, I'll check it out.

I'm looking for some disk imaging software (preferably freeware) similar to Acronis's True Image or Norton Ghost. It needs to be compatible with Windows XP and be able to create an image replica of the an entire hard drive.
Would like any suggestions if you've found and used something like this.

Thanks, Dennis. What I was really wondering is whether or not it's possible to add chapters to a video (movie) that currently has no chapters?
-
May be some help at the link below?
Thank you for this.

Is it possible to add chapters to a DVD backup of a movie using any of the reauthoring software so frequently mentioned on this forum?

I agree with Andavari about the free burning apps. However, I noticed that the Home Edition was now available and remembered a number of people discussing the Free version here on the forum.
A note to AnthonyA . . . I accidently wrote that the Free version now included gapless (DAO) burning. However, I don't believe that's the case. It's the Home Edition with that feature. Sorry about the mis-post -- I have corrected it.

Thanks to everyone for the input and suggestions. I'll start working my way through all of this.

GloryLogic has launched its "Home Edition" of BurnAware CD/DVD burning software. A number of new features have been added to its Home version, including audio CD DAO.

Have a look at this thread
Will the FEBE add-on accomplish this same thing>

The simplest way is to make regular back ups of your profile.
How do you do this?
-
Other than that I don't really know what it is, perhaps a messed up Firefox user profile or prefs.js file.
If one of these were the problem, is there a way to correct either one?

Firefox has been giving me lots of headaches when I'm trying to download files. The download begins -- then just stops after downloading a small portion of the file (sometimes it doesn't even start at all) -- and eventually times out. For instance, if I were downloading a 3MB file, it may download 750k then stop (no exact pattern as to how much gets downloaded before it quits). I've looked at just about every setting I can find, but I don't see anything obvious.
This is terribly frustrating and driving me crazy.

I tried that a while back and it caused problems with Firefox so dumped it (plus it was far more bloated than what I needed it for)
I also had a problem with Firefox when I attempted to use the last free version of RoboForm. However, I downloaded the current commercial version, and so far, everything is running smooth as silk -- behaving just as it should.

Since you don't want to deal with stuff another company may have on its site in the form of ad's, etc., you should probably host the files yourself.
I thought about that. What's the best and most secure way to do that?
-
Actually, I've been reviewing RoboForm -- it looks pretty good (and fairly secure, I think??).

I usually use Burrrn myself for audio CDs, but the price was right on this one today -- so why not? .
