  1. Ahm. Thank you, Caldor, for your encouraging words, especially from the perspective that I (and many, manys others, I presume), for this or that reason cannot afford installing Vista at the moment :-) So, as I've understood you, for those poor devils like myself - the unfortunate and silly XP-users - there is definitely no help available, no way for them to ever enjoy a relatively 'secure' life with their beloved, though XP-polluted, computers, even more - they are condemned to fail in any case, and are, on second (and first) thought, actually not even worth to be spoken of, right? What a sad fate. But thank you anyway, for opening my eyes. "You go, pal!" All the best, Atnes
  2. Thanks, Tarun. Why Firefox? Best, Atnes
  3. Hi, Soulja, how much did you have to pay for all this? ZoneAlarm pro is not free, is it? What about Kaspersky? And why Firefox? I dropped Firefox and am back to IE again. Greetings, Atnes
  4. Thank you, YoKenny! Great links! Atnes
  5. Dear Tarq57, Well, you did not put me off exactly, though you did frighten me a bit, hahaha, but this isn't too bad; a healthy 'stage fright' is much better than thoughtless courage and enthusiasm, I suppose. Thanks for the link, though, a lot of useful conversation, priceless tips etc. It seems to me, however, that compared to me everybody else is an expert in the field - and that I really might produce a perfect AV-tools-jam in my PC.. I still haven't decided what to do. At the moment, I am tersting the ZOne Alarm for free - 12 days trial left - but I am definitely not going to purchase it. It's too expensive. ... Best AV protection seems to be a never-ending dilemma (or trilemma, for that matter, hehehe), right? No wonder... Thanks again, Atnes
  6. Wow! Thanks. 'Bit frightening - smell after a lot of work & computer knowledge. I think a nice all-in-one package my be better for me and my capacity, after all. Atnes
  7. Very interesting and helpful. Layered defence. I think I shall try this one Thanks again. Atnes
  8. A lot, thanks, it helps a lot! But is combining different protection systems really 'safe'? I was told that one shoud be cautious with using different protection tools at the same time ? Best,Atnes
  9. Hello to all, A question: My Sophos Anti-virus etc. expired two days ago, and I decided to install something else instead. I was told that Zone-ALarm was a very reliable tool in all points (ALL-ROUND SECURITY, ANTI-SPY. ANTI-VIRUS, Firewall...), but it seems rather expensive, at least to/for me: 69, 95 Euro. Any suggestions about some other software? Maybe even free - but still good? Your answers will be highly appreciated. Thanks, Atnes

    PICTURE EDITOR

Hi to all, does any of you know of a good picture editor with the 'insert text' function? Thank you. Atnes
  12. Unfortunately, nothing has come up yet. I hate computers too! Best, Atnes
  13. Yes, exactly; Words saves it just asan image and basta. It would be very practical though to have the option of scanning a text (typically it saves as picture)and then converting this 'picture' back into the text again in order to be able to process it furter...(f.i. you have a certain piece of text only on paper / hard copy., like a looooong list of recommended literature, bibliography etc., usually rather meticulously equipped with all possible punctuation marks, diacritcs etc.) and which you need to add / insert at the end of an article or similar and most probably even complete it with your own suggestions. The Abby Fine Reader Program did / does this (converting ), but as much as I know, there is no free version available. Or? Best, Atnes
  14. Hello to All, does anyone know of a reasonably good free software to convert jpg. files to .doc files? Something that would perhaps functionally resemble the Abby Fine Reader? Hope there is something out there ! Thank you for your suggestions! Best, Atnes
  15. Thank you, hazellnut, you're right, of course. And my appologies for being so inconsiderate with 'diacritical signs' Best, Atnes
  16. I used to run Mozilla - FireFox last year - but was not that satisfied - it constantly overrun or overwrote my diacritical signs - which, in turn, made several search actions impossible for me. And there were other things I did not like about FireFox particualrly.... Well, maybe it is just because I am no expert in computer issues and don't know how to apply certain things properly. Anyway, for now, I am back to IE , 7 now - and I feel more secure if I protect my computer through an additional AV thing. But thanks all the same. Regards, Atnes
  17. Freedownload "ThreatFire" at http://www.threatfire.com/?gclid=CKfzveb55o8CFRIUEAodTghCYg Seems to work fine.. Regards, Atnes
  18. Thank you - problem solved. I downloaded the recommended (at the bottom of this page ). Regards, Atnes
  19. Hello everybody, now I am completely without virus protection - ZoneAlarm test has expired - and they want 59 Euro for their Internet security suit. Also, they promised to let me test their product for 3 weeks - but they switched it off only after 2 days! So, please, help me choose a fine antivirus program (other than ZoneLabs ), I need it badly and as soon as yesterday. Oh, and yes, I am running XP. Eagerly waiting for your answers! Best, Atnes
  20. Thanks. ZA firewall and antivirus it is then. Best, Atnes
  21. Hello everybody, I have just gone through rridgely's Malware Prevention Guide (wonderful guide, thank you!), and have now found myself confronted with a dilemma. I had been running Zone Alarm on my old computer and it had been serving me very well, but with the new computer (I acquired it some 10 days ago and have been totally absorbed in it ever since ), a dear colleague of mine, who helped me with the hard- and software, installed Sophos Antivirus on my new machine. After reading rridgey's Guide, I feel strongly inclined to go back to my dear, old Zone Alarm and to uninstall Sophos. What do you think? What are your experiences with these two protections? Is Zone Alarm really that much better, or am I just being guided by some odd sentimental feelings? Please, help me, any concrete advice will be most appreciated - and I really need it ! Thank you! Best, Atnes
  22. Thank you for your reply. The language is Slovenian - and yes, I meant MS Office 2003. So you say that it is safe to download the OpenOffice? Thanks. Atnes
  23. Hello everybody, I have a (presumably very stupid ) question. If I downloaded a Version of OpenOffice software (I already have MS Office 3), would it interfere with my MS Office 3 and make problems, or could I use both, f.i. I would use the OpenOffice spell checker (my MS Office3 doesn't offer one for my language), otherwise I would use the MS Office things? Or should I rather let the OpenOfice download be and try to find a spell checker elsewhere? Thanks! And don't laugh at me, please. Atnes
