  1. Once you've used the setup cartridges they're no longer recognised as setup cartridges.

So when you exchanged for a new printer they should have given you new setup cartridges.

    Richard S.

Thank you, Richard. And they DID, that's the point. THAT'S WHY i DON''T UNDERSTAND IT. And I even installed the software that came with the new product CD once again - although it was the same software for the same type of product - and still ... Then I went back to my seller and asked him to give me the used cartridges back - just to see if maybe the printer would rather recognise the used ones - NOTHING. The same message: "Please use SETUP cartridges." What should I do? What could be the cause for my printer's strange behaviour?

    Thanks anyway  .

  2. My brand new device HP Photosmart All-in-One B010 printer demands me to use SETUP cartridges, which I DO, of course - they came with the product anyway. I bought the thing last Sunday, only to discover that the TouchSmart screen was not working, so I could neither scan nor copy my documents. I could perform standard printing jobs quite satisfactorily, though - without, a I say, scanning and copying possibilities. Following the advice of our HP Customer Support Service, I exchanged the printer for a new one earlier today, installed it and set it up according to the recommended procedure, Now, the printer doesn't even start to print, not even then test page, because it wants me "to use the SETUP cartridges", which is pure nonsense, because I am using them anyway - they typically come with the product.. Why is this happening (to me)? Nobody seems to understand - my printer doesn't work because it cannot recognize the cartridges for what they are; SETUP cartridges. Another thing is that the HP Solution Center also doesn't seem to recognize my new printer; it keeps telling me that my old one, HP F 300 series, - is disconnected - and does not notice the presence of the new one, although I have already set it as my default printer. I bought this printer on Sunday because my F 380 series went suddenly out of order, and I thought didn't have the time to get it fixed because of my working deadlines: I NEEDED THE PRINTER - - and now I am wasting my time have been for the past TWO days!! with this new monster. Any suggestions about how to persuade the printer that the cartridges ARE the correct ones?

    Thank you in advance!

  3. try to (while connected to the internet)

    1) right click the item(s) with a exclamation point choose properties

    2) tell us what it says under "device status"

if it states the driver needs to be reinstalled you can skip to

    3) go to the driver tab and click upgrade driver

    Hi Nergal,

Thank you so much for your answer. It would seem as if I have "lost" it completely : WHERE DO I FIND THOSE ITEMS WITH A POSSIBLE EXCLAMATION MARK? Sorry for my ignorance

    Thanks,

Hi Andavan, THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR INFORMATIVE INSTRUCTIONS AND HELP.

Never heard of a PC manufacturer voiding a warranty for opening the case before, that's super odd if you want to upgrade components or replace broken components like a CD/DVD drive, etc!

Anyways if it's integrated sound on the motherboard you could use an external I suppose, or void the warranty and put in an internal one.

If it's not a hardware failure and instead some software glitch:

    1. First thing to check though is in Windows Services (Start > Run > Type in: services.msc), then scroll all the way to to bottom and make sure Windows Audio is set to Automatic, and is Started.

It is set to 'automatic' and is 'started'.

This is a quick easy fix sometimes. See if it works, if not:

    2. If you still have issues get the the manufacturer sound drivers installation file/disc and reinstall them.

    Can't find it ;):-(

See if it works, if not:

    3. Open Device Manager, find the sound card, right click it and select Properties. In Properties make sure you do not see any errors in the log window, then make sure the device is enabled it will read under Device Usage: Use this device (enable). Restart Windows if you had to manually enable it. See if it works, if not one last thing to try:

NO sound card in the Device Manager list. Strange - it has worked wonderfully for the last 2,5 years. ever since I bought this computer.

    4. Open Device Manager, find the sound card, right click it and select Uninstall. Restart Windows. On startup Windows will then re-detect the sound card.

    same as above

    Thanks again.

Atnes, lost in the sound-card enigma.

  5. What version of Windows are you running??

If you look at device manager do you see any yellow markers hovering over your sounds devices??

If you run "eventvwr.exe" (event viewer) do you see any errors relating to audio or audio devices??

    Richard S.

Thank yoiu, Richard, I am sorry for my delayed answer,, - I've been away,. I am running XP Professional.

I found many error message in the Applications list for OVI Suite.... and some in the System list for Service Control Manager...and none, obviously, directly relating to audio or audio devices (my knowledge in computing is less than poor , though:rolleyes: ... Hmmmmm

    Thanks anyway!

  6. What version of Windows are you running??

I AM RUNNING WINDOWS XP PREOFESSIONAL.

If you look at device manager do you see any yellow markers hovering over your sounds devices??

YES, I DO, NEXT TO THE PCI Mark.

If you run "eventvwr.exe" (event viewer) do you see any errors relating to audio or audio devices??

Haven't tried it yet- will do it!

Richard, thanks a lot for your answer!!!

  7. Still the same question - is perhaps anyone familiar with this beast:

    Speed-Link UltraPortable Audio Card USB

    by J?llenbeck GmbH

The customers' reviews say, f.i. things like : " My sound stopped working with no obvious cause, I ordered a new sound card and this USB device as well (better safe than sorry...).

This one arrived first and does the job perfectly, sound is back to how it was. Can't comment on the mic function though because I'm not using it, but I can only assume it works as well as the sound.

The PC instantly recognised it as the new default sound device, didn't cause any problems at all. ".. Do you think this really replaces an in-built sound card?

    Thanks!

  8. Hi to all,

I have a problem with my sound performance on my PC - actually, I have no sound performance at all. After trying all possible tricks and tests, I finally discovered that my sound card (which had been happily installed on my PC until recently) is not installed anymore - my computer keeps telling me that there is no audio device installed on my PC, no sound card available etc. What should I do? I don't want to open my computer case all by myself, since the warranty rules do not allow it anyway, therefore I am playing with the thought to buy one of those external sound devices, like for instance the below one or something similar. Would such a device perform like an in-built sound card that I used to have and is now gone missing for mysterious reasons? Does any of you have perhaps another solution to offer ? I would be very grateful - am rather lost without the sound o my computer, you know :(;)

  9. Your sound card drivers are not working hence no sound and problems accessing the mixer.

Open Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) look out for yellow markers and find the error codes.

When was the last time you had sound working??

Did you install/uninstall any software or applied any windows updates??

Have you tried a System Restore yet??

    Richard S.

Thank you, Richard. It was just a few days ago that I could listen to the music - everything was working just fine. And yes, I did uninstall some software - but I do not recall what exactlycool.gif it was - I uninstalled several things I beleived unneccessary or superfluous. And yes, I've already tried the System Restore thing, but the task could not get completed, and I don't know why; the xomputer youst sent an error message of not having completed the restore. Where do I find the Dwevice Manager you are suggesting I should open?

    Thanks a lot!

  10. Have you tried doing start>run and then typing sevices.msc in the runbox and pressing OK

Then scroll down to Windows Audio in the list. Right click on it and choose properties. Make the the service is started under 'startup type' and that the 'service status' is set to automatic.

I followed your instruction, but the computer sent me a message saying"Windows cannot find 'sevices.msc '...." I'm quite at a loss .... but thanks anyway :-))

  11. Hi,

Can anyone advise me on where to find & download free mixer devices for my XP Professional, SP3? Something must have happened to my audio system on my PC, because the speakers do not work at all, the volume icon on my desktop disappeared, and my computer keeps telling me that "there are no active mixer devices available". In other words: my computer is completely mute. sad.gif

Thanks in advance for any suggestion!

  12. Yes, I did buy the Pro version. Because of the amount of e-mail I receive on a daily basis, it was worth the investment to me.

Regarding "previewing" the e-mail, I do that only occasionally anymore -- only if I'm absolutely not sure. MailWasher color codes the incoming mail, but I'm to a point where I can usually confirm the type of e-mail (spam or legit) just by quickly looking at the Subject line and/or the e-mail address of the sender. This approach is not fool-proof either, but it works for me. Like anything else, MailWasher is just a tool -- and I'm sure everyone comes up with a way of using the "tool" a little differently.

Thanks again, TOM AZ! I'm going to get myself the Pro-version, too, as I too receive a considerable amount of e-mails daily :-)

    Regards, Atnes

  13. I've used MailWasher Pro for several years -- wouldn't be without it!

I get tons of e-mail -- much of it legitimate -- but this helps me sort through the pile very quickly. It does have a "training" component to it, so you need to give it a little time to learn what's good and what's not. Like everything, it's not 100% accurate, but it's amazing how well it does.

Thank you, Tom AZ. Ihave downloaded it - the free version - but it does not allow you to preview the messages...? Only if I decide to buy the Pro vesrion. Did you have to buy the Pro version, too? Other wise I don't see the point in using the MailWasher - if one cannot SEE the messages that should or should not be removed...

  14. i had the exact issue.

my 2 cents says if you HAVE to have outlook express, use mailwasher. it does work once it has been properly trained. it is a great program from a great company.

you might consider trying mozilla thunderbird as an alternative to oe.

better yet, just consider using a gmail account. that's what i ended up doing (after all the above). it works great for me.

with gmail's internal filtering, i maybe get 1 or 2 spams every week or so. what i especially like is that being an online account, i don't have to risk my computer by downloading any of the email. i just store it at gmail.

Thank you very much! I'll follow your instructions!

  16. Hello to All,

The ubi-present spam is driving me CRAZY!!!

Hundreds of messages, all offering / giving me billions of US dollars, Euros, UK POunds etc; crazy notifications of lottery winnings, invitations to accept and verify inheritance goods etc., etc, offerings of dubious joint-ventures and businesses, money-transfer-manipulations, and the list doesn't end here, not even remotely...The catch is that all these "senders" change their sender addresses almost every minute, so that it is sheer impossible even to block them on my Outlook Express...

What can I do? I'm looking for an effective software that would help me keep my inbox clean...but there are too many products dealing on offer... Has anyone of you any experiences with, say, MAILWASHER FREE?

Any suggestions, pleeeeeeease! Thank you very much in advance,

    Atnes, The crazy-driven Spam Victim

  17. Openoffice is compatible with vista.

It includes alternatives to word, powerpoint, excell and a few other programs as well.

    http://why.openoffice.org/why_great.html

I still use openoffice a lot when I use linux, I really think its the best ms alternative around.

However if you got the cash for office, I really think you should consider buying it, office 07 is just in another league then anything else right now.(even my mac user friends acknowledge that its better than anything on that platform. )

Yeah, you are right. Monesy is the world's ruler sometimes. I'll show your suggestion to my brother - I personally am using MS Office - an older version, 2003. Thanks

    anyway :-)

  18. I removed it in mere minutes of having it installed. It brought every program on my system to a complete crawl, and many others have reported that issue too. It's still puzzling why it doesn't effect some systems with slowdowns though.

    Thanks. Done.

  19. My brother has purchased a new laptop, VISTA included. He asked me to help him find a free word processor: Would OpenOffice 3.1 be O.K.? Is it compatible with VISTA? Does OpenOffice also include a program like/similar to PowerPoint? I sincerely apologize for these - in the eyes of manyof you, I'm sure :) - stupid questions, but I reeeeeally couldn't find any useful peace of information dealing with these issues on the whole wide world net  .

    Thank you for your answers!

    All the best, Atnes

  21. But I can tell you that IE8 is known for slowing down other applications.

Did anyone of you, who had installed IE8, return to IE7? I've been playing with the idea to re-install IE7....
