We've made some noticeable changes to how Defraggler operates - some fun, some important.

Large Files and Free Space Defrag

First, if you use Defraggler to defragment your free space, you can now tell it to leave large files alone while doing that.

Why? When Defraggler defrags the free space on your drive, it does so to optimize the free space -- and it may end up moving large files around in the process. If you've used Defraggler previously to optimize the drive by setting it to move large files to the end of it, your optimizations may be undone.

The solution is to let Defraggler know you don't want it to move large files during free space defragmentation. Here's how:

    1. In Defraggler, click Settings, and then click Options.

    2. On the Options dialog box, click the Defrag tab.

    3. Be sure the Move large files to the end of drive during whole drive defrag is selected.

    4. Select Do not move 'Large Files' during Defrag Freespace.

    5. Click OK.

    Download Defraggler now!

Custom colors - for the Picasso in you

If you'd like to change the colors Defraggler uses in its drive map, we've added a feature that makes it possible. You can now set custom colors for each type of sector (small box) displayed in the Drive Map.

To set custom colors for the Drive Map:

    1. In Defraggler, click Settings, and then click Options.

    2. On the General tab, select Use custom drive map colors, and then click Edit.

    3. To change a color, click the color box next to the item and select a new color. To reset the color to its default setting, click the color box, and then click Default.

    4. Click Save.

    Download Defraggler now!

Here's the full list of changes:

    • Added custom drive map colors (Options > General > Interface).
    • Fixed schedules for multiple drives.
    • Fragmented info is now displayed in df.exe.
    • 'Large files' can now be excluded from freespace defrag (Options > Defrag > Advanced).
    • Improvements to the way crash data is collected.
    • Various minor UI tweaks.
    • Several minor bugs fixed.

CCleaner, as with all of our products, is designed to be easy-to-use. You've probably used software that's hard to work with, provides unclear options, or doesn't work consistently from one screen to the next. We have, and we don't like it.

Frequently we'll make some changes to the CCleaner user interface to make it easier to use. Those changes form the bulk of this release.

    More right-click and CTRL-click action:

You can now right-click an item in the Registry Integrity list (for example, MUI Cache) to have CCleaner scan just those types of Registry items.

    cap1.png

In the main Cleaner section, you can click an item heading (for example, Internet Explorer) and select all sub-items, clear all sub-items, or restore the default.

    cap2.png

You can now select multiple items in the Include, Exclude, and System Restore sections. To select multiple items, hold down the Control key and click each one.

    cap3.png

We've made even more improvements which are listed below in the full change log:

    CCleaner v2.20.920

    • Added support for Google Chrome recently closed tabs.
    • Disabled removal of most recent System restore point.
    • Fixed bug with Internet Explorer 8 Compatibility View settings.
    • Improved uninstaller support for Windows 7.
    • Enhanced right-click menu options for Cleaner screen tree.
    • Added extra information under title for Options and Tools screens.
    • Added right-click menu to Registry screen tree.
    • Added support to multi-select items in Include, Exclude and System Restore screens.
    • Added language support for Estonian and Farsi.
    • Internal 64-bit improvements.
    • Minor bug fixes.

We've included the ability to exclude files or groups of files from being defragmented. Defraggler has always been a small, fast program, but we understand that sometimes you're in a hurry - or you just don't need to defragment certain files.

Every time we turn around, it seems, we fix a bug, include a new feature, or otherwise improve how Recuva works. Unlike many other software companies, we prefer to release updates often*, so that you can get the newest features and error fixes right away. It also helps us because we can get your feedback at our Forum for future planning.

Our Recuva spring cleaning includes the following changes:

    • When you run a regular or Deep Scan, Recuva will display the amount of time remaining until completion. Get yourself a cup of tea or coffee if it's going to be a while.
    • For serious photographers, we've added support for Canon RAW (.CRW) files to the Deep Scan.
    • In previous versions, securely deleting certain FAT32 files didn't work. We've fixed that.
    • Recuva now handles errors more gracefully.
    • As always, we've made various tiny UI tweaks to make Recuva easier to use.

You can download version 1.26 of Recuva at www.recuva.com

    * P.S. Worried that you might miss an update for Piriform software? There are several ways to get them:

    1. Every time you run Defraggler, CCleaner, or Recuva, click the Check for updates... link at the bottom corner of the main window.

We're continuing to add features and clean things up as we develop Defraggler and our other Windows tools.

The main new feature in this release is the search tool. You'll find it in the main window just to the right of the File list tab. You can use the search tool to find files with a certain name or file, files larger than a given size, or files smaller than a given size. Once Defraggler returns a list of files matching your criteria, you can defragment them right away.

Why use this? You may, for example, want to defragment all your movies, which tend to be very large files. Or you may want to look for all of the files in your temporary folder, or any file ending in .EXE. Defraggler gives you the flexibility to find the files you want to defrag, fast!

    Download it now!

Here's the full list of improvements we've made in this release:

    • New search feature.
    • Various tweaks to the drive list.
    • Improvements to freespace calculation when moving large files.
    • Improved handling of of sparse files.
    • Lots of minor UI tweaks.

  13. Hi,

The forum will be moving servers tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon. Around 1pm London time.

It seems like we just updated Recuva - in fact, version 1.24 was released on February 26, less than a month ago. We're always looking for ways to add new features, fix bugs, and generally spiff things up, so we're happy to release v1.25.

The big news here is the ongoing improvements in iPod support. Recuva v1.25 will now restore the names of files it recovers from your iPod, so you'll know at a glance which music tracks and photographs are which.

We've also improved Recuva's stability when you work with very large files. And for those of you still using Windows 98 or 2000, we've improved the way Recuva handles floppy disks (amazing how important those were just a few years ago).

The full change log is below:

    • iPod track names are now restored.
    • Improved UI stability when working with very large files.
    • Improved handling of floppies on early Windows OSs.
    • Various tweaks to UI for non-English languages.
    • Scan optimizations.
    • Various minor tweaks.
