Connecting XP to Vista

Hi, I want to connect an XP-Pro SP2 PC to a Vista laptop. No firewalls are on during this connection. I am using only a crossover cable, no router or other hardware. I can connect to the public folders on the Vista laptop now. I would like to connect to a different folder that is password protected. I have tried several attempts at "Properties" settings on the Vista folder with no luck, the XP PC only sees the public folders. My network icon in the Tray Notification area shows limited on both PC's. The user accounts on both PC's have administrative authority. This connection is used rarely and only offline for backup purposes. Any advice is appreciated.
