kimsland
Hi I run CCleaner often, and find it invaluable for all computers I use. But when I also run TFC by OldTimer, straight after running CCleaner, I am informed via log: User's FireFox cache emptied: (this being around 30Meg but can be more at times) Why doesn't CCleaner remove Firefox cache? Note: "Internet Cache" is already checked under Applications > Firefox/Mozilla I've never understood why this simple step cannot be cleaned correctly by CCleaner (old and newest revisions) I have also updated Firefox, when the updates were available, and I'm currently running the latest version on XP Pro SP3 Have I missed something here? Does CCleaner remove FireFox cache or not? And if so, why then does TFC find and remove another 30Meg ? Please try TFC yourself, straight after running CCleaner (if you have also previously used Firefox of course) Can someone let me know what's going on with this? kimsland Edited March 7, 2010 by kimsland
Thrak
Interesting - I'm not even sure how you can tell, seeing as TFC scrolls immediately all the way to the bottom of its log, and doesn't let you look at it, by demanding a reboot even when it is cleaning 0 bytes. Have you actually looked in the FF cache to see if there is anything there after running CC? edit: Note, if you run CC with FF running, it won't dump the cache (or all of the cache, at least). ident
also note by re opening ff then typing about:config there will also be a minimal cache from loading No fate but what we make
kimsland
Thanks Thrak and ident, for your replies. @Thrak: TFC does show the entire log, you just move the side bar up Plus, it will not "demand a reboot" if the files are not in use. Yes I have since confirmed Firefox cache and what CCleaner removes: After running CCleaner (Note: all browsers closed) CCleaner Firefox Log: Actual Files Removed/Not Removed: cookies.sqlite Not Removed (Note: CCleaner support required to confirm) downloads.sqlite Removed formhistory.sqlite Removed places.sqlite Not Removed (Note: CCleaner support required to confirm) places.sqlite-journal Removed @ident Thanks ident, from the hint on about:config and also Thrak asking me to have a look at Firefox removed entries, I did ------- What I have found I first must apologize, I have read the "bytes" amount removed, incorrectly from running TFC. It was only 3Meg (not 30) EDIT Since having contact with bugzilla.mozilla.org I have confirmed that it is 30 Meg (I thought it was originally ) Firstly I checked Firefox: "about:cache?device=memory" and further default entries All seemed ok. I have found that TFC also removes folder: %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profilename> This folder contains: XPC.mfl FastLoad cache file for user interface components data. XUL.mfl FastLoad cache file for user interface extensions data. urlclassifier3.sqlite Phishing protection data. So, the question is: Should CCleaner remove this as well? Looking into XPC.mfl and XUL.mfl (and I note that they are cache files!) they could be removed, but its inconsequential as they are just re-created on next Firefox restart. Further looking into file: urlclassifier3.sqlite This file should not be removed. As its "Phishing protection data" that increases in size as more sites are found (through User browsing) thus protecting the User. Mind you it is also automatically re-created on next Firefox restart. But back to its default first installed state! My conclusion CCleaner does remove all temp files (Although I would like confirmation to 2 files I noted above (cookies.sqlite and places.sqlite) TFC seems to remove further (up to 30 + Meg) of files, that may actually be required (further support required to confirm this) ------- So thanks for your general support guys. I hope that the request (from both of you) for me to provide more information has helped Please also answer, specifically, my concerns above for more support info required. kimsland
This issue was further discussed HERE with the developer of TFC.exe > OldTimer and myself > kimsland. I believe this information link is valid to post here as it may conclude this issue (although I'm still not exactly convinced either way!) I may stick with CCleaner only on User's computers, until I feel that a 30Meg download is justified.
kimsland
What is the new CCleaner exactly doing with: urlclassifier3.sqlite ? When I check the file urlclassifier3.sqlite I think (not sure) that it reduced in size by 5Meg? Oh its "Compacting" It certainly slows down the cleaning process, I ran CCleaner 3 times in a row, and it still slowed at that point (of compacting urlclassifier3.sqlite) EDIT Oh, I see there is an option to deselect "Compact Databases" under Applications. I'm happy with this addition
