Need advice on Defragging options

Windows XP Pro SP2

I download 1 hour videos, like file dn008.0318.mp4 from democracynow.com using the video player Miro.exe.

 

The 451,294 KB, file typically has 6,300 fragments.

 

Windows defrag couldn't defrag them. Piniform Defraggler showed 3 fragments after Defragging it.

 

But I notice the options for

"defrag freespace" and

"defrag freespace (allow fragmentation)"

 

What are some guidelines for choosing when to use these options?

Hi Stan,

If you want "all" your freespace in one big chunk and spend more time doing it,then use "defrag freespace".

If you want it done quicker and don't mind some fragmentation at the end then select "defrag freespace (allow fragmentation).

I opt for the second choice.

I am going to create more fragmentation as soon as I run something else, anyway.

P.S. The more big chunks of freespace the less chance of tens of thousands of fragments.

You don't have to do this too often unless you constantly update many, many, many things in a relatively short time frame.
