Recova Overwriting Recovered Photos

First off, Recova is probably the easiest to use recovery software that I have ever seen. I applaud you for that.

 

The one thing I don't like is the fact that it bypasses any overwrites when recovering. This is just bad practice.

 

This is especially bad for me, as when my Olympus camera deletes something it renames it to Olympus Digital Camera.jpg then deletes it. This means when I recover it with Recova I either have to do them one at a time and rename them to prevent overwrites (a pain in the butt let me tell you) or it just overwrites the previously recovered file over and over as it recovers, leaving you with only your last image and your flash card several hundred read/writes older.

 

PLEASE fix this soon. This is a serious design flaw and though this program is designed to preserve files, it's programmers didn't do a very good job making sure the user is level with what is happening.

Aha! I'm not crazy. I couldn't figure out why the program didn't work, except on one file at a time (jpg file). I'm delighted you are going to fix this in the next release. I can't wait.

It is an excellent program and much appreciated.

I use an HP camera and the files go onto a SD card and once deleted, they all come out as "hp photosmart 720.jpg" If when I recover them and opt for them to go to a specific drive/folder I also had the option for the program to simply add a # to the file, if the name alread exists, I could take care of it from there myself. Eg could end up with "hp photosmart 720.jpg" "hp photosmart 720 01.jpg" "hp photosmart 720 02.jpg" "hp photosmart 720 03.jpg" etc.

It's just surprising that Piriform would surpress overwrite warnings by default anyway! I mean, they are making software for RECOVERING DATA, not destroying it!

 

If you are in need of an immediate fix, try PhotoRec. (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec) The program is fast, lightweight, and compatible with everything under the sun. Plus it's open source, as well as free.

 

The only thing that might throw some people is the fact it uses the command line. Don't be afraid of it- all you have to do is use your arrow keys and the enter key instead of a mouse. It's not a big deal. Try it before you deny it.
