Found the problem: In Control Panel, Audio Properties, the Device volume slider was all the way to the left. Still... since I didn't mess with anything, it's a mystery. I have seen this happen on Win98 a long time ago but as I use Steve Gibson's ClicKey utility I would notice the absence of sound right away when I'm typing.
