Hi, Yes, the new Beta version. I just ran all of the CCleaner. The browser is Firefox and I am using Microsoft Office 365. Thanks so much for responding. AM a little lost.
Also, what it actually says where the bookmarks shortcuts should be:
The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Firefoxâs files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem.
And yes, this was after a new installation of CCCleaner.
the betaâs for testing, and you should be judicious about using anything beta. âi just ran allâ worries me, i havenât seen it yet but i would assume that thereâs a health check and a custom clean and maybe even a registry module (though naybe not as such thing can be dangerous in the wrong hands and if 7 is anything i guess itâs more user friendly. maybe iâll try it this week, but ask yourself if youâre what a beta tester should be. or if Iâm wrong prove it by expanding on âi ran it allâ
Hi, So, I ran Health Check, Custom Clean, Performance Optimiser, Driver and Software Updater. This is the version I installed after paying for a premium subscription.
See the Firefox support article Fix âThe bookmarks and history system will not be functionalâ error message. Closing Firefox and restarting your computer (which hopefully forces CCleaner BETA 7 to release the lock on your Firefox files) will often solve this error. If your bookmarks donât reappear after your computer is restarted the instructions in that article might help you create new favicons.sqlite and places.sqlite files in your Firefox user profile and recover your bookmarks .
If that doesnât work see the Firefox support article Recover Lost or Missing Bookmarks. As noted in that article, Firefox automatically creates a backup of your bookmarks every few days and saves up to 15 of these backups in your Firefox user profile.
If you go to Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks | Import & Backup | Restore this should display a list of recent bookmark backups (see my image below). Select the most recent backup to start the restore.
If your list of bookmark backups is empty then that means CCleaner BETA 7 has, unfortunately, also wiped your bookmark backups. If that is the case post back and let us know, since there might be another way to recover at least some of your bookmarks from an older Firefox profile.
Also let us know if you use another browser like Chrome or MS Edge on a regular basis, since you also have the option of importing bookmarks from another browsers into Firefox.
I see that lmacri is helping you with Firefox itself so Iâll not jump in on that.
What I will say though is that the v7 Beta version of CCleaner is probably not the one that you want to be using at the moment.
As Nergal says it is a test version and, can/will have some oddities and bugs until it has been finished and released as the Official version not a Beta.
Itâs your choice of course, but Iâd suggest that you may be happier using the Officially released v6.## until v7 is fully finished and officially replaces it.
You can download an installer for the latest Official version, v6.39.11584, from here: Download CCleaner builds | CCleaner Portable, Slim, and more
Once it has downloaded simply double click the downleded installer to install CCleaner v6.39.
Then open it (it looks different to the v7 beta) and go to âOptionsâ > âLicense Keyâ to enter your key and activate it as Pro.
PS. You can leave v7 Beta on your machine if you like, or you could uninstall it.
If you keep both versions then youâll still be able to use both versions as you like, but Iâd suggest that youâd be happier sticking to using only v6.## - until the v7 is fully released and is no longer a testing version.
HINT: Every week or so I manually back up my Firefox bookmarks (Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks | Import & Backup | Backup) and save the .json file this creates to a removable USB stick. That way if some disaster happens and all the bookmark backups Firefox has automatically saved on my hard drive are lost I can go to Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks | Import & Backup | Restore | Choose File and restore my bookmarks from that removable USB stick.
I strongly agree with Nergal and nukecadâs suggestion to uninstall the CCleaner BETA 7 and use the stable CCleaner v6.x instead - at least until CCleaner v7.x goes into wide release. CCleaner BETA 7 is not only in Phase 1 of its release and is missing many features present in stable CCleaner v6.x editions (see the comparison chart <here>), itâs also buggy and a disaster just waiting to happen, as you recently discovered.
If you want to continue beta-testing the CCleaner BETA 7 Iâd suggest you install disk imaging software and use it to create regular full disk images of your entire hard drive [as well as emergency recovery media (e.g., a bootable USB stick)] so you can perform an emergency recovery if your system files are ever damaged and your system becomes unstable or wonât boot up. I use Macrium Reflect Free v 8.x (out of support since Jan 2024 but fully functional) but other good choices are reviewed in the September 2024 Tech Republic article Top 5 Free & Reliable Hard Disk Drive Cloning Software. As an extra precaution Iâve also enabled Windows System Restore (see instructions <here> on the Windows Central site) since this built-in Windows feature is normally disabled by default on both Win 10 and Win 11.
If you switch to the stable CCleaner v6.x I would still be very cautious about using any feature other than Custom Clean. Advanced features like Health Check, Performance Optimizer and Software Updater can produce unexpected results, and the CCleaner Driver Updater board is full of posts from users who did serious damage to their system after allowing Driver Updater to update a hardware driver. The CCleaner support article <here> also warns users that the registry cleaner tool (not available in CCleaner BETA 7 Phase 1) should be used with caution since it can produce âpotentially harmful resultsâ.
If you cannot add new bookmarks itâs also possible one or both of your bookmarks files (i.e., places.sqlite and/or favicons.sqlite) are locked. See the section titled âFix the bookmarks fileâ in the Mozilla Firefox support article Canât add, change or save bookmarks - How to fix and ensure neither of these files had their attribute set to âRead Onlyâ.
If that doesnât help the section titled âCreate a new bookmarks fileâ in that same support article explains how to force Firefox to a create a new places.sqlite file by deleting (or renaming) the existing file (WARNING: This will also clear your entire browsing history). According to cbholzhauerâs 18-Dec-2025 post <here> in NicolaBâs topic they had to delete / rename both places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite in order to recover their bookmarks.
