I accidentally cleaned Firefox bookmarks!

As a CCleaner user of many years, I’m really upset to find myself having GREAT difficulty using the latest version. It’s taken me a long time to even get the app running on my laptop and now I find I accidentally lost all of my Internet bookmarks in Firefox. I was trying to specify exactly what I wanted to be cleaned, which was very easy in the old format but is opaque in Version 7. Is it possible to get my bookmarks back? It’s scarey to thin what else I accidentally had CCleaner erase. I’d be very grateful if someone can help me with this problem.

Hi NicolaB:

See the Firefox support article Recover Lost or Missing Bookmarks. As noted in that article, Firefox automatically creates a backup of your bookmarks every few days and saves up to 15 of these backups in your Firefox user profile.

If you go to Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks | Import and Backup | Restore this should display a list of recent bookmark backups - see my image below. Select the most recent backup [or in your case, the last (largest) bookmark backup created just before you accidentally deleted your bookmarks with CCleaner 7] to start the restore.

If your list of bookmark backups is empty then that means CCleaner 7 has, unfortunately, also wiped your bookmark backups. If that is the case post back and let us know, since there might be another way to recover at least some of your bookmarks from an older Firefox profile.

Also let us know if you use another browser like Chrome or MS Edge on a regular basis, since you also have the option of importing bookmarks from another browser into Firefox.

HINT: Every week or so I manually back up my Firefox bookmarks (Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks | Import and Backup | Backup) and save the .json file this creates to a removable USB stick. That way if some disaster happens and all the bookmark backups Firefox has automatically saved on my hard drive are lost I can go to Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks | Import & Backup | Restore | Choose File and restore my bookmarks from that removable USB stick.

The same thing happened to me. It wiped out my all bookmarks, all my backups, everything. When I try to restore from backup, not only is there nothing, but the dialog box won’t even let me import bookmarks from another browser!

Hi cbholzhauer:

What browser (e.g., Chrome, MS Edge, etc.) are you trying to import bookmarks from?

If you have a Firefox browser on another computer the process is fairly straightforward. Backup your bookmarks on the “source” computer (Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks | Import and Backup | Backup) and save the .json file on a removable USB stick, and then restore that .json file (Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks | Import and Backup | Restore | Choose File) on your problem “target” computer as instructed in the Mozilla support article Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer.

If you want to import bookmarks from a non-Firefox browser like Chrome or MS Edge and the Import Wizard (Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks | Import and Backup | Import Data from Another Browser …) described in the Mozilla support article Import data from another browser doesn’t work then that support article goes on to say:

If the Import Wizard does not list your other browser, you can still import bookmarks from that browser, but you will need to first export and save the bookmarks as an HTML file (visit the support site for your other browser if you need help with that). You can then import those bookmarks into Firefox from the HTML file.”

NOTE 1: Firefox’s Import Wizard will import all data (i.e., bookmarks, passwords, browsing history and form autofill data) unless you specifically choose to only import bookmarks as instructed in that support article.

NOTE 2: I would personally try to avoid importing bookmarks saved from another browser like Chrome or MS Edge as an HTML file unless you’ve tried all other options. I don’t know if the import process has improved in recent years, but I tried this several years ago by exporting my bookmarks from MS Edge as an HTML file and then importing that HTML file into my Firefox browser (Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks | Import and Backup | Import Bookmarks From HTML) , and it created a bit of a mess in my Firefox bookmarks that took a while to clean up.

If your Firefox browser has more than one Firefox user profile you might also be able to restore at least some of your bookmarks by copying the places.sqlite file (plus places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal, if present) and favicons.sqlite file (plus favicons.sqlite-shm and favicons.sqlite-wal, if present) from the older profile folder located in the hidden folder at C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\oldprofilename\ and pasting those files into your current default Firefox user profile. See the Mozilla support articles Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data and Restore bookmarks, passwords, and data from an old Firefox profile.

The issue wasn’t about not being able to import bookmarks into Firefox (my browser), but that CC Cleaner wiped out my bookmarks and backups. I could not restore the bookmarks from backup since those were gone too.

I finally solved this, after much trial and error, by deleting “places.sqlite” and “favicons.sqlite” files. After doing so and re-starting Firefox, my bookmarks reappeared.

I also recently had this problem. Trying to recover bookmarks from a list of ‘saved’ to restore didn’t work, so searched online & found this to help. It worked. Search for ‘How to restore Firefox bookmarks’ on UTube (Nov. 5, 2025) I can’t post the link. client=firefox-b-d&q=recover+bookmarks+from+firefox&sei=nDlkae7_BNXH0PEP8b6w-Q8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:369ca15c,vid:F68r8H4F3eg,st:0

The part of the link you were trying to put is all tracking data
is this the video

That’s all well and good except CC7 has a checkmark for bookmark backups (at least on Edge, I can’t tell on Firefox as cc7 does not yet support portable or non-default install points (custom location in CC6)) so likely whatever wiped out the bookmarks is maybe tied to that or at least would negate the video’s instructions.

Good advice but you need to tell people how to find these files…they are quite hidden and nested deep.
