I AM NOT computer smart. I did a clean yesterday and now ALL of my bookmarks are gone! Any help would be great
Hi @anniecreel,
Please let me know which browser you are experiencing this issue with, and if you performed a Custom Clean or Health Check?
I am using Firefox. I did not do a Custom Clean.
What is the solution?
@anniecreel I am not able to replicate this issue please could you let me know what versions of Firefox and CCleaner you are using.
Hi Laurence_CCleaner:
See my 10-Jan-2026 post in nihilistic’s Unwanted changes in Firefox behaviour after running CCleaner, which includes a partial list of topics started by users who lost their Firefox bookmarks and/or had other Firefox Profile files (e.g., places.sqlite, favicons.sqlite, etc.) corrupted after upgrading to CCleaner v7.x.
NOTE to users: Suej’s 03-Sep-2025 Lost bookmarks includes a few suggestions for recovering Firefox bookmarks lost or damaged after running CCleaner v7.x.
According to your 21-Jan-2026 post in Pianoman’s CCleaner 7 constantly hanging Avast / Piriform has already identified a bug that can cause Health Check to hang when it attempts to clean Firefox that will hopefully be fixed in the upcoming CCleaner v7.05 release. Is it possible that at least some of these Firefox problems are related to the new Profile Manager that began a gradual rollout with Firefox 144.0.0 (14-Oct-2025 release notes here)? See the 14-Sep-2025 ghacks article Firefox 144.0 is out with new profile management, tab group improvements, and security fixes and the Mozilla support article Manage Firefox Profiles.

How do I find what versions I am using?
@anniecreel Did you notice that warning at the top of your browser window there:
The bookmarks and History system will not be functional because one of Firefox’s files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem.
That error is saying that the bookmarks and history are still there, but that they have been “blocked” by something.
(To get more technical it means that the “places.sqlite” database is locked for some reason).
ie. The bookmarks have not been deleted - but something is stopping Firefox from opening them.
That could be an AV blocking it, or it could be due to a crash or fault with Firefox, or …
So to start with:
What Antivirus or other security software(s) are you running?
If it is an AV/security software causing your issue then this may not cure it, but try opening your Start menu and doing a ‘Restart’ of your computer - (not a ‘Shutdown’ a ‘Restart’).
Hi anniecreel:
In Firefox, click your Menu button (the three-line “hamburger”
icon) in the top-right corner of the main interface, select Help, and then select About Firefox.
If you are using an older CCleaner v6.x product your CCleaner edition and version number (e.g., CCleaner Free v6.39.11548) are displayed in the top-left corner of the main interface.
I have never used a CCleaner v7.x product, but according to the support article Configure Settings in CCleaner 7 if you click the Settings button (“gear” icon) near the bottom-left corner of the main interface and choose the About tab this will display your CCleaner edition and version number (e.g., CCleaner Professional v7.4.1172). From an image I found on the web:
Dell Inspiron 15 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.6809 * Firefox v147.0.2 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.25110.6-1.1.25110.1 * Malwarebytes Standard v5.4.7.229-148.0.5470 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7783 * CCleaner Free Portable v6.39.11548 * HDCleaner Portable 64-Bit v2.095
Firefox 147.0.2.(64bit)

Hi All,
To help us investigate the issue and understand what may be happening, please generate CCleaner log files by following the steps below:
- Download and install the CCleaner Support Tool using the link below:
https://download.ccleaner.com/CCleanerSupportTool.exe - Once installed, run the tool to generate the logs.
- At the end of the process, you’ll receive a 5-digit File ID.
- Please share that File ID with me so I can review the logs and investigate further.
If you run into any problems or have questions, please let me know.
Am I supposed to post the file ID # here or reply to the email you sent to me? I’m just worried about posting that # on a public thread. i don’t know what is in that file.
I am running all your products: Kamo, etc…. Of course, I have tried this, but where is the solution to fix this!!! I need a support team that can help with issues, not a community forum where everybody seems to be having a lot of problems and very few solutions. After 5 years of using CCCleaner, I am DONE with this product.
Sorry! I thought I replied to you earlier. I did have that error. I also restarted my computer.
Hi Kevini7:
What is your Windows operating system, and what solutions suggested in suej’s topic Lost bookmarks did you try? Some of those suggestions include:
- A full restart *** of your computer (e.g., Start | Power icon | Restart).
- The restore of a recent Firefox bookmark backup (created prior to losing your bookmarks) from Bookmarks | Manage Bookmarks | Import & Backup | Restore.
- Creation of new favicons.sqlite and places.sqlite files in your Firefox user profile (also see cbholzhauer’s 18-Dec-2025 post in NicolaB’s I accidentally cleaned Firefox bookmarks!).
I would advise you uninstall CCleaner v7.x first before trying any of these possible solutions and then roll back to CCleaner v6.39 (see nukecad’s 08-Oct-2025 How to Roll Back from v7 to v6.39) while you look for another disk cleaner to permanently replace CCleaner (see the discussion in Hmm888’s 30-Dec-2025 How much longer should we stay with version 6.39).
*** NOTE: If you have a Win 10 or higher OS and haven’t already done so, disable Fast Startup as instructed AdvancedSetup’s Malwarebytes tutorial Disable-Fast-Startup and then restart your computer a few times to ensure the setting change takes effect. The Fast Startup power option (also known as hybrid boot-up / hybrid shutdown) is enabled by default in Win 10 and Win 11 but it can sometimes interfere with the loading and initialization of drivers and services at boot-up and cause all sorts of unexpected glitches and problems with a variety of software programs.
