as far as i know, "ccleaner" (avast) is still honoring lifetime licenses.

if you are getting a message saying "cannot connect," see if your HOSTS file is causing the problem. you can disable your HOSTS file temporarily by renaming it to "nohosts." you can change it back to "hosts" after you have finished troubleshooting.

do you use the "spybot s&d" antimalware program? it has been known to cause problems with HOSTS files, in the past, and it is the only program that i know of that generates a HOSTS file and so that is why i suspect that it is the source of the problem that some people have been having with not being able to activate their ccleaner licenses, due to "cannot connect."

again, try disabling your HOSTS file to see if it is causing the "cannot connect" problem.

the HOSTS file is located at "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc"

They deactivated mine after I posted this.

I am a long time user of CCleaner Pro.  While I am told not to worry about the amount of cookies and garbage the quickly accumulates in my computer, even while it sits there inactively, I am not willing to ignore the immediate build up of perhaps 4000MB of trash.  When I run CCleaner it will in the first instance find some of this trash.  I delete ("Make it Better") and start over and it will continue to find more--much more, which I continue to delete.  Usually, I must run CCleaner up to about 6 times before it no longer finds trackers, trash, etc.  This is true even though I now run only Firefox and DuckDuckGo in an effort to solve this problem.  I have deleted Google from the computer in hopes of stopping this load of unwanted trash.

I have always thought that CCleaner was a good product and I have paid for the Pro service thinking it would do the best job.  Can anyone tell me based on their own experience of some other "cleaner" and/or "barrier" that will actually do the job?  I would be most appreciative.  Thanks.  Ed

    Hey Ed,

They won't tell you this but if you are using a lifetime key they essentially put you back to a free version, I.e it's not in your head, you paid for a pro lifetime and you're being given a "free" version of the service. They'll stop you from using any other feathures as well like the driver updater with a shady trick that tells you that your wi-fi isn't working. They are basicially giving you the middle finger and trying to get you to re-buy their newer subscription plans.

You're being given the shaft, Ed. Sorry.

  3. Hi,

I've been a long-time user of this app and software for both phone and windows. I bought it for both.

I know businesses/companies like Piriform don't care much if one person goes, but I thought I'd say anyway because of how let down I have felt by the software and the way supporting members have been treated for a while now.

I bought a lifetime license, and that should mean it works for a lifetime, most the features no longer work with my license, even the basic cleaning isn't actually a pro version. It seems CCleaner has forced the loyal members into a corner and given them the shaft after they supported them for years, kicked them out and invalidated their lifetime keys.

I am also having constant issues trying to get the features to work, the shady way they block people that have a lifetime license with a fake error claiming the internet is not connected is completely wrong and is just another big middle finger to us.

I will be switching to IOBit Software for registry cleaning and driver updates etc as they have continued to support their members and have not blocked old ones out.

I am sad to see what has come to what was once an amazing company and software.

I suggest anyone else that feels this way say how they feel or they'll probably continue to take advantage of you.

I'll attach my license just so you know I did make the purchase and mean what I say. I have not edited anything other than to remove the personal details. I'll probably give away my key here later as it's next to useless now.

The only other thing I can think of is you could also look for any blocks in the Windows HOSTS file for following URLs (and anything that appears before them such as healthcheck.ccleaner.com) which are all related to CCleaner and should not be blocked since blocking "may cause issues" for your purchased features:

    avast.com
    avcdn.net
    ccleaner.com
    piriform.com

Thank you - that was a good suggestion but no nothing related to ccleaner in the hosts file either.

When something lets (part of) CCleaner run only once, and then not again unless you reinstall CCleaner, then it's usually an AntiVirus/Firewall doing the blocking.

Which AntiVirus are you using and what version is it at? (Version number please, not just 'up to date').

It also helps if we know your Windows version/build and CCleaner version.

Having said that, if this happens when you are trying to actually update a driver then it could simply be that the particular server that CCleaner is trying to fetch the update from is not available (at that time).
That would show the same 'not connected' error message.
But in that case a reinstall shouldn't work either.

    Thanks for the reply,

I only have windows firewall/defender running and it's all up to date.

I have malwarebytes pro aswell but that does not run unless I ask it to.

The version I am on is v5.91.9537 (64-bit)

  6. There was a time when I half expected John McAfee to be the founder behind bitcoin. Decided it probably wasn't likely to be him after some research though. He led an interesting life.
