  1. Have you checked if the "Only delete temp files older than 48 hours" box is ticked in CCleaners options? If so try unticking it then running the cleaner.

JWirt: I'm a little reluctant to try this. What if a temporary file created by the current operating system session is deleted. Will the current session (i.e., WinXP then crash?

JWirt: See my reply below. Unchecking the 48 hour criterion worked. My question is why?

  2. Hi JWirt,

Are there some files in there that you want to specifically Secure Delete (OVERWRITE)?

(Looked like possibly some Banking records.)

If so you might try CCleaning those specific files, while we wait for

    some more experienced advice.

JWirt: Wasn't aware of the "Include" function. Thanks.

    I'll be here,

    EDIT

Are you running CCleaner when logged on as the Administrator?

    JWirt: Yes.

P.S. I have been doing some research and learning today.

When logged in as the Administrator, what do you find for Temp and TMP user environmental variables?

Start > MY COMPUTER > PROPERTIES > ADVANCED > ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLES > EDIT under user variables.

    JWirt: I find this:

    TEMP = %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp

    TMP = %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp

Is this what you find for the user variable values? For TEMP AND TMP?

    %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp

    JWirt: Yes, see above.

If not then you probably need to edit them?

If that is what you find then more research and

    MORE HELP NEEDED.

    .

  3. Hello JWirt,

There are a wide variety of members on this forum.

The info you have provided will help them sometimes to remember similar situations and the problem resolution. It is also reviewed by the programming team and may help them find and resolve "bugs".

What I meant by "background" programs had to do mainly with anti-malware type programs that sometimes interfere with the proper operation of "valid" programs such as CCleaner.

JWirt: I have ZoneAlarm and NOD32 running. That's all.

Also some Browsers have options that prevent CCleaner from operating as you would expect.

JWirt: I have popups blocked, 3rd party cookies are prompted. I use a 127.0.0.1 loopback hosts file.

By the way,how BIG is that TEMP file ?

    JWirt: 322mb (that's megabytes)

P.S. Some users never reboot unless they must.CCleaner marks index.dat files for deletion at next

    reboot.Have you done a reboot?

JWirt Yes. I rebooted yesterday and again just now in response to your advice.

For your reading enjoyment.Note the link to CCleaner at the bottom.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Index.dat

    A reminder to all users.

P.S. Some times we forget that after deleting some software, adding new software, performing some "online" scans ETC. that we were told to reboot after doing so.

Some "strange" things can occur until we do so.Thats why MS is so insistent about doing a reboot after installing some of their updates. They want you to "DO IT NOW".THEY ARE SERIOUS ABOUT THIS.So are other software developers.

DON'T PUT OFF A REBOOT!!!! That is unless you are willing to put up with the consequences.

  4. I have,

    OS: Windows XP

Browsers: IE 7.0 and Firefox 2.0.0.11

I'm not sure what you mean by "background programs." Here are the main processes that show up in the Windows Task Manager:

    HFNetChkProService -- a patch manager

    ZoneAlarm

    Nod32 antivirus

    a bank id number generator

    Google Toolbar Notifier

Then there are lots of services and so. I have killed most of the startup programs that applications like Acrobat, iTunes, etc. put in one's Startup folder.

  5. I have WinXP. Tried to defrag a drive with Thunderbird on it tonight. Defragged the files on the drive rapidly. Then Defragger tried to defrag the "freespace." Took forever (like 25 minutes until I killed the process). Defragging the files took just a few minutes.

Why is this? What can be fragmented about free space?

The drive in question is a SCSI, RAID-1'd drive.

  6. For example, CCleaner leaves these files among _many_ other files in my C:\documents and settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp directory:

...and so on. The list of files goes on.

CCleaner doesn't take these files out. I even Restarted to see if they would be taken out in a delayed action.

  7. If CCleaner is set to remove FireFox cookies, does it remove all website login cookies, too, or what?

Tracking cookies can go but I would rather not lose the login cookies. Cummulatively, it would take me hours and hours to replace them. This is not how I would like to spend my time.
