I unchecked the 48 hour criterion, ran CCleaner, and rebooted. All the files in the use Temp directory disappeared! I don't understand why unchecking the criterion makes a difference. 98 precent of the files in the directory were over 48 hours old. Anyway, thanks for your help. John

I have, OS: Windows XP Browsers: IE 7.0 and Firefox 2.0.0.11 I'm not sure what you mean by "background programs." Here are the main processes that show up in the Windows Task Manager: HFNetChkProService -- a patch manager ZoneAlarm Nod32 antivirus a bank id number generator Google Toolbar Notifier Then there are lots of services and so. I have killed most of the startup programs that applications like Acrobat, iTunes, etc. put in one's Startup folder.

I have WinXP. Tried to defrag a drive with Thunderbird on it tonight. Defragged the files on the drive rapidly. Then Defragger tried to defrag the "freespace." Took forever (like 25 minutes until I killed the process). Defragging the files took just a few minutes. Why is this? What can be fragmented about free space? The drive in question is a SCSI, RAID-1'd drive. john Wirt

CCleaner doesn't clean out this temp directory on my machine: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp How come? Can I safely delete it manually? JW

If CCleaner is set to remove FireFox cookies, does it remove all website login cookies, too, or what? Tracking cookies can go but I would rather not lose the login cookies. Cummulatively, it would take me hours and hours to replace them. This is not how I would like to spend my time. John
