  1. Thanks - this makes a little more sense now and it's always good to know what these options can do. I will definitely do some more research on this on the internet. P.S. I think DBAN wipes the whole HDD from boot only and cannot do a free space only wipe.
  2. Just trying to understand how this works. My system has been formatted to NTFS. What's the difference in wiping free space with the various options and does it affect system performance? In terms of visited web pages, once they are deleted, I guess they are moved to free space on the C drive, so the only way to be sure of removing complete trace of them is to do a 3,7 or 35 pass wipe? Are there any other settings that I should select in CCleaner just to make sure? Obviously reinstalling the OS and fully wiping the drive is an option but very tedious...
  3. OK - many thanks. This is a really big RAM saver.
  4. What would I do without CCleaner? This is really one of the best software products I have seen. If I'm looking at speeding up a pc, I go into startup and disable as many programs as possible. If I disable them all is there a chance that the pc won't boot at all, or is there a mechanism to prevent this from happening? I can get startup info on what to enable/disable from SysInfo
  5. What about this? Will this work at this stage? : My link
  6. You're probably right about this - do you know how to remove or replace these scripts? I'm guessing most of these problems started after the SP3 install and don't have much to do with CCleaner. Am wondering what to do with McAfee - maybe there is a repair option in Add/Remove Programs or I can untick it from msconfig startup items as a temporary measure. Also if I remove SP3 do you think this may cause further problems?!
  7. Hi, I installed CCleaner on a networked computer which was running almost inoperably. I used CCleaner to try to delete temporary internet files but this was at 0% after 1 hour so I removed cookies etc. from the main screen which was done relatively prompltly. I cleaned the registry (fix all selected issues) and took a backup of the it when it was in SP2. I have now done an SP3 install. I am getting some funny messages on the command prompt at startup namely: C:\Ver null C:\Ver> find XP C:\>\\w2kpdc\repl\import\scripts\alms.bat The application or DLL C:\Program Files\McAfee\Virus Scan Enterprise\mfedhia.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette. The following processes have therefore taken place: 1. CCleaner Registry cleaner run when computer in XP SP2. File of deletions backed up. 2. PC updated to SP3 - SP3 install does its own backup of the registry. 3. Messages as above are seen on start up. No further cleaning of registry takes place. Are these problems anything to do with CCleaner or the SP3 install? I'm wondering how safe it would be to double click on the backup file now (if it would resolve these problems and has necessarily been the cause of them), or if this is an unwise moved based on the upgrade from SP2 to SP3 and that SP3 may have rewritten parts of the registry... Many Thanks for any help.
