  1. Please help - I can't get a simple description of what the "Wipe Free Space" function is actually for? Is it to hide deleted files? I don't have anything I want to hide on this computer -- should I therefore ignore this function? it sounds like it has potentially dangerous sside effects anyway. Many thanks, NOEL NOEL
  2. Hi Ishan, yes I am referring to the bottom right hand corner showing on the task bar -- I thought this was called the system tray. The Windows Updates icon WAS showing, then suddenly disappeared. At the time, there WERE important updates waiting to be installed, which I subsequently have installed. I will however now wait for a week or so to see if the icon reappears when new updates are ready... it is of course always possible I am just being completely stupid about this and that the icon disappeared AFTER I started the update process... I don't think so, though. Many thanks. NOEL
  3. I'm pretty sure my system is clean. it lives behind a hardware firewall with good internet security and up-to-date regular virus scanning.
  4. To give you precise info, guys, what has actually happened is that the icon for Windows Security Centre has disappeared from my system tray. I can still find Windows Security Centrein my Control Panel, but it has gone from my system tray and I cannot find how to get it back. thanks, noel
  5. Thanks Robbie, I have run that command and -- like Ishan_Rulz's link, it brought up the Windows Update website. In both cases this showed me a ghraphic telling me that "Automatic Updates: Turned ON." and "Your computer is set to receive notifications when new updates are available. " But y system tray doesn't show me the icon to allow me to manually get updates, which is what I want. noel
  6. Thanks Ishan, your link does work and I have got as far as the list of recommended downloads I need. But the Automatic Updates and Windows Security Centre icon in my system tray have just vanished. I need to turn them back on, if anyone has any ideas please. noel
  7. Yes, fully virus protected. The spring clean was because the PC has had some problems lately -- corrupted graphics card has been replaced, the machine physically cleaned and extra RAM put in, but still running very slow... my fault, because for much too long I haven't cleaned up all the crud lately that ccleaner deals with. noel
  8. Possibly coincidental with me installing CCleaner v.2.20.920 and Click&Clean 3.1 today, my Windows Updates icon disappeared from my system tray and I can't find anyway of updating my system, which I am spring cleaning. Even connecting to the Windows Update site seems to result in a "server not available for this page" error. is this a known issue with CCleaner or Click&Clean 3.1 please? I am running XP Pro SP3. thanks, NOEL
