  1. I don't even really know what some of these files are so have been pretty much just using CCleaner for Temp.Internet Files but out of curiosity I just enabled the Default settings in both Windows & Apps. & did just the Analysis which found 142.1MB.  I don't even know if that amount is considered a lot.  Anyway . . .  my actual question is: should I really keep all the Default selections?  I read somewhere that there's at least a couple that shouldn't be selected, especially by a PC novice. I guess the ones I really wonder about are:

    Index.dat files

    System Memory Dumps

    System Windows Log files

    Windows MS Search

    Thank you.

    eMachine

    Windows 7

    IE 9

  2. Never had this happen before.  It did keep my "To keep Cookies" just fine but left about 20 in the "Cookies to Delete".  I'm assuming they're Flash cookies?

I'm still on CCleaner  version 4.02

    w7 64 bit

IE9 just updated a couple days ago.

I suppose I should update CCleaner,  am quite behind.  So, if I do, will the update still save my Keep cookies?  iirc,  I had quite a time trying to get them set correctly.

    Thanks a bunch,

    grits

  3. I believe these are 'Default' selections.

Under 'Windows' - IE- " what is Index.dat files?"

Under 'Applications' - Windows - MS Management Console - "is that referring to Event Viewer?"

Also under Apps - it still lists Thunderbird which I uninstalled long ago. ?

    - lists 2 versions of Foxit Reader. ?

    - lists 2 versions of Avast. ?

    - lists 2 programs that I've never used, came Pre-installed when I bought PC. ?

  4. Sorry for this dumb question but can't seem to find an answer otherwise. Are "portable" & "slim" the same thing? I did see something that kinda sounded like the "slim version" is intended more for 'advanced' people, not a 'novice'. ???

  5. Also make sure you don't have your web browser(s) configured to automatically delete them when you close the browser(s).

Nope, don't have that set. I'm probably doing something wrong when I select the cookies to keep when I run CCleaner?

  6. I'm still on version 4.02.4115

    Windows 7 64 bit

    IE 9

I like to keep cookies for the weather channel 'cuz I'm watching at least 2 - 4 locations. I move everything with "weather" in the name to the "Keep" column but the keep getting deleted. What am I doing wrong?

    Thank you,

    grits

  7. CCleaner -> Options -> Advanced -> Save all settings to INI file

Takes all settings out of the registry and puts them into ccleaner.ini which will be in the same folder/path where CCleaner.exe is.

Is it better to use ini rather than registry?

  8. Sorry for my stupidity when it comes to computers.

I'm the only one using this PC & don't at this point have to worry about my drive filling up.

I'm guessing that MFT means Master File ? which at this point is "Greek to me"

Both of those have check marks by default but not sure I really need them checked?

    Thank you.

  9. @Andavari, I don't even know what you mean by "INI file.

99.9% of anything in my machine is at Default Settings because most of what I read in 'Options' might as well be printed in a foreign language, I don't know what I'm supposed to pick or unpick. I probably shouldn't even be allowed to have a computer due to my lack of knowledge.

  10. This question actually applies to both CCleaner & Speccy, but am hoping I don't have to ask in separate areas?

I have both programs already but not the newest versions. Is it best to just update over the top of what I have or uninstall old & install new ones?

    Thanks,

    grits

  11. Installed Defraggler yesterday, 1st time ever using it. Did the analyze, then clicked defrag button. I believe it said it would take a day to complete!! It was time to fix supper anyway so went ahead with it.

I have no idea how long it did take (have used something in past that showed how long) but was done when I came to 'puter this morning. I'm not sure it did much of anything? Did it give up too soon? Did I not set something right? I didn't see anything else to do other than analyse & defrag. Will try to attach a couple screen shots so you can see what I'm talking about. Thank you.

  12. By running the cleaner only, it just removes temporary unimportant junk, right? So if I want to find & delete some leftover's from a bad uninstall of a software program, the cleaning won't cause a problem?

    Thanks

  13. Hi all,

Thanks for all your replies in my absence of several days. I don't understand some of them: "cmdliine, midline, predictive texting" ?

Will get back to this tomorrow & do some checking out of your suggestions but feel I need to clarify my biggest need for 'scroll capture'. I rarely need it for a web page. My need is for captures to post in help forums to show what I probably can't describe in words or to show the whole thing. An example would be all the warnings & errors in my Events Viewer.

Not sure that's a good explanation but need to get out of here to ready for big dinner.

    "Merry Christmas",

    grits

  14. I know of a program that captures a window that scrolls off the screen.

But Nergal stated earlier that it is bad form for someone who is not a mod to recommend, so I decided against posting.

Do hope you get it sorted out. :)

Sounds like you got an 'ok', Super Fast, so whatcha got to recommend?

  15. Darn! I just installed Firefox on Sat.12/8 but after read this I'm wodering if I should have gone with Opera instead.

I'm just a simple computer user so several of the posts were way ovr my head. I went with Firefox 'cuz I've read so many times that it's safer than IE even tho' I am very careful about where I go.

oops, was just re-reading this when I noticed I misspelled 'over' & it wasn't caught but the last time I posted using Firefox I was thrilled about spell checking 'cuz IE didn't.

  16. Thank you,Dennis!! Will give them a try.

I've used WOT for several years & really relied on it using IE, but changed to Firefox a few days ago & haven't

    got it there yet.

  17. That's why I was wondering, 'cuz I remember one time was gonna download from a site I kept seeing until I did some research & found it to be baadd. But "thanx" will just have to 'let my fingers do the walking', carefully tho'.
