    Video news

I tried to watch a Fox News video off the Fox News website (yeah - I know . . you don't need to say anything about that . . .) The video would not play until I diasbled Norton security. Is there a way of configuring Norton so those kinds of videos will play OK without having to disable Norton? (I have no problems with videos off the BBC site, though.) Also, is there any way of downloading those videos so that they can be watched later?
  2. I've run Windows Defender and it detected one item - iMesh, which it described as being of medium risk. Should I be concerned, and what action should I take?

krit86lr and Andavari: Thanks very much for your help and feedback. Yet again the help I have received has done the trick. I appreciate it!

Thanks - can you tell me how I do that?

    Picasa2

I've just installed Picasa2. While it seems to be a great program, it has slowed down the start-up of my computer. It now takes a good couple of minutes for the thing to settle down and for all the icons to appear in the system tray. Is there any way I can restore the start-up time?

    Slow start-up

Problem solved - thanks for all your help! To avoid duplication, I've posted some observations at http://forum.ccleaner.com/index.php?showtopic=4533 - it seems that Windows Defenders might have had somethng to do with it.
  7. I've looked at Event Viewer and you're right - the list is huge! Thanks - that's really interesting. I'll be totally honest, though, and admit that it means nothing to me. What should I do with all that information, and is there anything in particular I should be looking for?
  8. Thanks a lot - that has done the trick. Appreciated!
  9. Hi. Yes, I can do that, but when I use that shortcut it just takes me to a bunch of files within the Defender folder. I was rather hoping I could just have an icon I could click on to run the Windows Defender scan.
  10. Thanks, but like I said, it doesn't appear in my programs list on the Start menu. I'm puzzled as to how to run Defender.
  11. Hi Mike: I ran Step 1 OK, but this seemed to uninstall Windows Defender. So when I got to Step 2, there was no Windows Defender in the program list. pwillener: I'm not sure what Event Viewer is. Hang on - hold your fire! It's worked, but in a slightly different way from how it worked for you. Like I said, there was no Windows Defender in the program list, but the icon (and the warning sign) was still in the system tray after I carried out Step 1. I opened Windows Defender via that icon, and this time the update worked. And the icon with its warning sign has disappeared at last. Thanks! One minor issue, though - now that I have no icon or Windows Defender option in the program list, how do I run it?
  12. I have an alert sign on top of the Windows Defender icon in the system tray. And when I open Windows Defender, it says "Windows Defender definitions haven't been updated in 69 days". So I click on "Check for updates", and I get a message in a bubble saying "Windows Defender is connecting to the internet to acquire new definitions and engine upgrades". It then says that "Windows Defender is up to date with definitions and engine upgrades" . . . but the original message saying that definitions haven't been updated and the alert sign in the system tray don't go away. Any ideas?

    Sound

Sorted it! I followed your instructions again - but this time I scrolled down further in the Sounds menu. There is a dedicated Windows Explorer section on the list. Thanks a lot for your help!

    Sound

Hang on - I've just found something. What you suggested DOES work, but "Select" refers to when I click on "Start" and select an application to open. What I'm trying to restore is the soft clicking sound within IE when a page refreshes - not the sound when I initially open an application.

    Sound

I've tried associating several sounds with "Select", and it seems quite happy to save the changes. But still there is no sound when I open an internet page or click on a link. (By the way, all other sounds - at start-up and playing music, for example - are working fine, so it isn't a problem with the Mute or sound card, as far as I can tell.)

    Slow start-up

I've had a helpful reply from Andy, which I'm working through at the moment. But what is strange is that a couple of things have happened simultaneously. One of them is that a Windows Security Center bubble pops up at start-up, stating that Norton Security isn't on, even though it IS on. And all the icons in the tray at the bottom right-hand corner are taking an age to appear at start-up.

    Sound

kobrakommander56: I know a lot of people don't like IE, but I think this is a sojnd problem rather than an IE problem. lokoike: Thanks for your tips. I went through the Control Panel to the Sounds and Audio Devices as you suggested, and there was indeed nothing next to "Select". But I wasn't sure what sound to associate with it - any ideas?

    Sound

Bizarrely, the "click" sound when I click on something on Internet Explorer or when a page refreshes has stopped happening. Every other sound my computer makes seems to be working fine, though. Any ideas?

    Slow start-up

Once I've gone past the Welcome screen, it's a good three or four minutes before I can start opening applications without it taking an age for them to respond. I've had Windows Defender installed for some time, so I don't think that has been the cause of it. I'll post a Hijack This log in a moment - any advice gratefully received!

    Slow start-up

I've run programs like Ewido, Spybot, Windows Defender, Spyware Blaster, Ad-Aware and CCleaner and my system seems to be working fine, but it is getting slower and slower at start-up. Any ideas on how to restore its start-up speed? (I've also defragged.)

    RegSupreme

I often scan for Issues with CCleaner, and then fix them once I've found them. But I've got a trial version of RegSupreme at the moment, and if I run that it seems to find more registry problems than CCleaner does. So is it worth buying RegSupreme to run alongside CCleaner?
