  1. Maybe. If anything a HJT log could either find that malware is the cause, or rule out malware being the cause if the system is clean.

Should I post a log here or in the Hijack This log forum?

  2. Possible hardware firewall built into the modem, a misconfiguration in Internet Explorer's security settings, or a computer that was previously infected and has LSP issues or a hijacked HOSTS file, etc.

    Thanks, Andavari.

Would a Hijack This log be likely to spot the problem?

  3. A friend of mine has a laptop on to which I have successfully downloaded CCleaner, SuperAntiSpware, Spyware Blaster and AVG Version 8.0.

All of them installed correcty first time, and the internet is up and running, so I know there is no connection problem. But for some reason, none of the programs I have downloaded will allow me to install any updates.

I have done a little bit of research and it was suggestd to me that perhaps there is a firewall problem. But even when I turn the Windows firewall off, the programs won't accept updates.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Canary.

  4. Hey guys - have the moderators given up assisting people in the Spyware Hell forums?

I'm not complaining - goodness knows that so many good people have given so much fantastic help for free over the years - but I was just curious.

    :D

  5. I have two USB ports on my computer. For some reason, my wireless connection won't work when I put the adapter in one of the ports, but it will in the other port.

I know there's no problem with the adapter or with the router because they both work fine when I use the other port.

Equally, all other bits of hardware seem to work fine in BOTH ports.

Does anyone have any idea as to what I need to do to make the wireless adapter work in both ports?

  6. Thanks for all your help and tips, guys.

I finally solved the problem by following the adobe troubleshooting guide. I had to run something called "reset_minimal" which I found in the Window Resoure Kits folder.

  7. I've had problems with Flash player only on one site only so I downloaded the update from here and just to make sure the uninstaller from here. ;)

Hi guys, and thanks for your help so far. I have run the Software Inspector and that shows that there are no old versions of Adobe Flash installed. But when I try to download a new version of Flash, I still get an error message.

I've followed the instructions on the error message, but it has got me nowhere.

I now can't even watch basic things such as videos on Youtube.

  8. I had trouble installing the latest version of Flash, so I visited the Adobe site and followed the instructions that were there. That included removing previous versions of Flash, which Idid.

But now I can't download ANY versions. The Adobe site suggests going to Add/Remove Programs and repairing the browser, but there is no repair option on Windows Internet Explorer 7 (or not one that I can see, anyway).

    Any ideas?

  9. Hi - me again.

I've decided to get a Liteon external DVD burner, but there are different sorts. For what it's worth, I'm in the UK, so the choice might be somewhat different for me than elsewhere.

Could someone tell me which of those available at Amazon.co.uk (not Amazon.com) I should plump for?

    Thanks.

Hi guys - any thoughts on this one?

    Cheers

    Thanks.

  11. Yep, there're plenty of external DVD writers available, connected via USB, although I couldn't recommend one as I don't have one.

I should imagine they're all much of a muchness, but if it's any help I have Samsung and LG internal DVD writers, and they perform well with no problems.

External writers are usually just internal writers with a case and a separate power supply and USB connection, and cost a little more.

Prices vary a lot, so I'd shop around, and maybe the guys on here might have some recommendations.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot Dennis. I'll now try to find some recommendations!

  12. I had used Ad-Aware since it's humble beginnings, however I didn't care for the new version much myself and won't use it either.

    Hi Andavari,

Do you recommend an alternative to Ad-Aware, or is having Spyware Blaster, Spybot, AVG Free Edition and SuperAntiSpyware sufficient?

  13. Thanks for all your help so far, guys.

I like the idea of using a DVD writer to put the movies on to disc, but I don't have one on my laptop. Is there such a thing as an add-on DVD writer? And if so, are there any recommendations?

  14. 15GB of memory?!?! What do you intend doing that needs that?

I've got a number of movies that I've downloaded plus something like 3,000 old cassettes from my youth that I want to turn into MP3 files. I reckon I actually need about 11GB, but I thought I'd get a bit more space for the future.

    Any ideas?

  15. What's the cheapest way to buy, say, 15GB of additional memory? Would it be a memory stick?

Also, are there any such devices that are password-enabled?

  16. Is there any easy way to delete ALL files and folders related to MSN Messenger? I've run the uninstaller, but there are still various Windows Live folders and e-mail counters around the place.

Do I have to do all that manually, or is there a complete uninstaller option?

  17. Hi Dennis, Andavari and everyone else,

It worked! I followed Dennis's advice as far as downloading Microsoft .NET Framework version 1.1 redistributable package, and then let the Automatic Updates program run its course once again. This time the Automatic Updates worked.

Thanks so much for all your help, as usual. I'd buy you all a pint if I could!

  18. Hi Canary, after doing a bit of research, I think it's possible you may have a damaged version of .NET framework 1 or 1.1.

If you haven't already resolved the problem, can you look in start > my computer > C: > windows > microsoft.net > framework, and see what version folders you have, as in the screenshot.

    dvtzzktnthnhhilzjjjz.jpg

As you can see, in my case, I have V1.0, V1.1, V2.0., although V1.0 does not show up in my add/remove programs.

If you already have V1.0 and V1.1, which are the updates you're being asked to install, and can't, you may have to do a repair, or uninstall with a tool specially made by MS for just such a problem.

If it was me, I'd start with the latest version and work my way down, binning them all via add/remove programs. A couple of months back I binned V3 without any problems.

Anyway, post back what version folders you actually have, and we'll take it from there.

And if any of you other guys have had experience of .NET framework installation problems, I'm not proud, feel free to jump in with any advice.

Hi Dennis, and thanks for your help so far. Thanks to everyone else, too.

    The versions I have are 1.0.3705, 1.1.4322, 2.0.50727, 3.0 and 3.5.

    Does that sound right?

  19. Have you tried installing a newer version of .net?

    MSDN .net 3.x

It might work I dunno tho...

I am a newbie canary, it is just a thought. Further if there is a reason that you would want 1.x instead, could you let me know. I am learning here so treat this idiot with kid gloves....k?

Most likely you are looking at this and going OMG...kid gloves, Canary, kid gloves.

Not at all! :D I appreciate your help!

The point is, though, that I don't want that version of .net. It's just that my computer keeps telling me there is an update for me. It's not something I'm actively seeking.

  20. I keep getting a message in my system tray telling me I need to install automatic updates.

I let the updates install but then get a message saying: "The following updates were not installed: Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1"

The next time I log on, I get prompted to install the update again, and then I get the same message. How can I stop this happening?

  21. My Adobe Reader 7.0.8 keeps trying to update itself, but it then comes up with a message stating that it can't update because it can't remove the previous version of Adobe Reader 8.1.

I've tried removing Adobe entirely from my system, but I can't get the last files from version 7.0.8 to delete. When I then visit the Acrobat site and try to install version 8.1 again, I get the same message about version 8.1 - even though I don't think I have version 8.1 installed in the first place.

So I guess my questions are, how do I completely delete version 7.0.8, and how do I also make sure that any trace of version 8.1 is also removed before I start the installation progresss again from scratch?
