  1. I'm not going to get into a war of words with you. It's not my style. You attacked Piriform needlessly and I defended them with just cause. You assumed that just because you had problems on your end, that there was some type of conspiracy going on. I abruptly put an end to that notion. "G.F.Y", I really didn't know what it meant at first but after several minutes of thinking about your blatant abrasiveness, I figured it out. You don't have to worry about me anymore, I just won't try to help you. Have a great evening. Good luck with all 56 of those computers.

"I'm not going to get into a war of words with you. It's not my style." Words that are CLEARLY inconsistent with your initial and subsequent postings, where I quote...

"... before you start crying wolf..."

"Just because you have a problem, doesn't mean the whole world has one..."

"If you can't take the heat, stay out the kitchen."

You consistently and indirectly berate my posts with superfluous banter that has no constructive value whatsoever. Clearly, your supercilious demeanor is better suited away from this forum, swagger.

Regarding your statement, "...I just won't try to help you," clearly you are also diluted since you never offered any assistance - only a ne'er-do-well's divisive derision.

  2. Welcome to Piriform Martin.

Well to tell you the truth I've only just started to use the ini option. I've always gone into the registry and saved the settings to a reg file. Its a bit more convenient using the ini, I also use the Recuva ini option. ;)

    Good to hear, Keithuk.

I chose a slightly different path and created a simple batch file (with desktop icon) that does it all for me in a single click... where, from my PCs root directory, ccl.bat = copy "C:\Program Files\CCleaner_INI_file\ccleaner.ini" "C:\Program Files\CCleaner"

Perhaps a similar batch file would save you the inconvenience.

  3. I've had no problems downloading slim build... ever (well in just over 2 years I've been using it at a guess). I have only ever used Firefox or Opera and only ever download from ccleaner.com, however I have had a few corrupted downloads on other software and it turned out to be my download manager so it might be that Martin.

I know some Internet services slow down at peak times too.

I don't want to drop CCleaner, I love it thanks. So just reporting no problems in my neck of the woods (England, UK) with the download site.

Glad to hear you have had no problems and have successfully accessed the site from the UK, robocod.

Like you, prior to my initial post of Feb 28 2009 at 05:51 PM, I only used FF or Opera and never had problems. Never used a DLM since the, SLIM version, files have always been under 1MB.

Interestingly, I have no problems at Major Geeks - therefore, the only conclusion is a problem with the server(s) associated with http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim as accessed from 56 PCs in the Saint Paul and Minneapolis metropolitan area of Minnesota.

    Martin

    UPDATE

    > Have successfully downloaded SLIM with Opera 9.64 - one transfer down, fifty-five to go (all accomplished via remote connection).

    > Sucess on 2 thru 10 of 56 PCs - as stated in my initial post, dated 28 FEB 09, I just wait a week or so and the problem is resolved - this time I waited (or so) - it must be the CCleaner server(s).

    LATEST UPDATE

    > All good things must wait... problem returns to CCleaner server(s) - whether Firefox 3.07, Opera 9.64, or IE.

    > No problem with Major Geeks - their servers have no problems.

  4. Martin I have just been here

    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds

    and downloaded the slim build.

I can assure you there is no conspiracy here, sometimes it can take a few hours for different builds to get on the servers but there is usually no problems. Perhaps re assessing some of your internet/firewall settings may help, as you seem to have a history of download problems with this. Also give it a try without using a download manager.

Understood - hazelnut . . . if you review my initial post, you will find that this was something that I was aware of (more days, than hours, based on my experience, however) "I just wait a week or so and the problem is resolved."

At this time, the problem remains - after another round of 56 PCs.

  5. Don't get sensitive now... You basically attacked Piriform and their intentions. All I did was tell you that I had no problems downloading the slim version, indicating that this was not a worldwide issue that Piriform has somehow created in an effort to make you install the Yahoo toolbar. Also, they do give you the option to NOT install the toolbar in the installation process. If you can't take the heat, stay out the kitchen.

    removed rude comment

  6. LOL! I don't mean to laugh but your conspiracy theory is unwarranted. I just downloaded the new version of CCleaner Slim through their website at around 7:45 this morning. I think you need to check your network and Internet settings before you start crying wolf. Just because you have a problem, doesn't mean the whole world has one and that there's some sort of conspiracy out there.

    Take care,

    swagger

    Interesting perspective.

Glad to hear that you have not had any problems. Thanks for the sarcasm and for not offering constructive criticism.

I have had the exact same problem on 56 independent PCs, swagger. All differing networks, many stand-alone.

  7. As I've mentioned in another post Martin, I think the slim build is only different because it's minus the Yahoo Toolbar option, which you can uncheck during the install.

I appreciate the slimmer build will come down for you quicker, but that's all I can suggest at the moment. If any of the other guys can think of a solution I'm sure they'll post it.

I am reposting my initial problem again because I thought that it was resolved by using Internet Explorer. IE may have worked ONCE before, but this morning it has the EXACT SAME PROBLEM that I discribed with FF3 and Opera.

What is wrong with the CCleaner website and the Slim version, Piriform?

Is it that Piriform does not truthfully want us using the slim version?

Is the truth simply that Piriform wants everyone to use the fat-overhead, Yahoo-toolbar, crap marketing, full version?

What is it? Please be honest and truthful because this is really starting to piss me off.

As a consultant, I have recommended Piriform products to over a thousand clients. Given this OBVIOUS and REPEATING problem, I am less than 24 hours away from instructing my clients to REMOVE all Piriform products because they are no longer reliable - at least not in the consistent manner that has been the norm the last couple of years, less the last months with the Slim download problem - which has been a real pain in the ass.

Maybe its time we all droppped CCleaner and use other products like Free Internet Window Washer 2.5

    Disappointed again,

    Martin Smithson

  8. I had the same problem with dialup and FF and Free Download Manager. I went to Major Geeks and downloaded the new slim version with no problems.

Looks like Major Geeks website lags behind FileHippo and the CCleaner website regarding the availability of new releases. Therefore, I have not been able to share the same experience, grewowl2. However, thanks for the tip - I shall try MG again.

    Martin

  9. Well that is a bad move Martin thats if you don't mind loosing all your setting and Cookies to Keep. If your using the ini option then you will need to move ccleaner.ini to another folder before uninstalling then move it back before you run the newer version. Just install over the top of the previous version. ;)

    Good point, Keithuk.

Fortunately, for the past 2 years I have saved my .ini file in a separate directory. Once the new version of CCleaner is installed, I copy my backup .ini to the newly created CCleaner directory.

    Martin

  10. I don't doubt what you say Martin, but I've just downloaded the slim version from the following link, and it came down very quick and intact.

    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds

Are you downloading from this link?

Edit: It appears you are, but give the link a try anyway.

Thanks for your incredibly fast reply, there, DennisD.

At first I thought it may be the .aspx suffix in my saved URL, so I tried your link. Unfortunately, the download quit at 35%.

I suppose this may be a problem for only us lame 56K dial-up folks. I say that because I am guessing that your ISP is not a dial-up service.

Thanks again for your response, DennisD. Like you, I wished it had worked.

    Martin

    EDITED . . . 5:15 PM CDT as follows . . .

    Got it to work. :D

The problem appears to be my preferred browser choices - Firefox 3.0.6 and Opera 9.63

I hate IE6 with a passion and refuse to upgrade to IE7 or try the IE8 Beta. IE (in any form, in my experience) is excessively slow loading, poor security, miserably fails the ACID TESTS, etc. However, I tried my link as well as your link, DennisD, and both worked with IE6 version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_qfe.080814-1242.

Immediately after, I tried both Firefox 3.0.6 and Opera 9.63 and both failed AGAIN. Trying IE6 came to mind when I remembered another time when I discovered or was informed that a website had been optimized for Internet Explorer, because the web pages failed to load with Firefox or Opera. Perhaps that is what has happened at http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx or http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.

Regardless, it looks like I will have to add http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds to my IE6 Links - along with MSWindowsUpdates.

Thanks again for your support, DennisD.

    Best regards,

    Martin :D

P.S. To support my IE6 opinion, my current ACID TEST results include:

    ACID TEST 2 http://www.webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html

    Opera 9.63 - PASSED

    Firefox 3.0.6 - PASSED

IE6 fails miserably - not even close <_<

    ACID TEST 3 http://acid3.acidtests.org/

Opera 9.63 fails, but reaches 84/100

Firefox 3.0.6 fails, but reaches 71/100

IE6 fails miserably at 12/100 - pathetic

  11. Hi all,

Once a new build of CCleaner is released and posted, I typically like to remove my existing CCleaner and install the new build.

I prefer the slim version, currently CCleaner v2.17.853 - Slim

In the last 36 hours (or so), I have tried to download this build 5 or 6 times and, while it starts, it never completes.

When this has happened in the passed, with other CCleaner - Slim builds, after 2 or 3 failed attempts, I just wait a week or so and the problem is resolved. This time, I am not as patient and I am 100% confident that my ISP connection is okay, as well as my O/S, browser(s) and download manager.

I now believe that this is a re-occurring theme - within the first day or two after new build is released where my CCleaner v2.XX.XXX - Slim download begins, but then fails to complete. www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx

What is the issue with downloading CCleaner - Slim soon after it is added to the website noted above?

    Thanks,

    Martin

  12. To this day if I want to do a full system defrag (you know the slow type) I disable the antivirus real-time protection as it can easily add another 25%-50% to the total defrag time. When doing a files only defrag with Defraggler I don't find it necessary.

    As do I, Andavari.

    Thanks for your post.

    Regards,

    Martin

  13. While I too noticed Diskeeper to be fast, it doesnt seem to do a thorough job compared to other defraggers like PerfectDisk.

Also Diskeeper may not be aggressive when consolidating free space.

I am in complete agreement with your perspective on Diskeeper regarding its ability to consolidate free space, anonymous_user.

Diskeeper fails miserably with respect to free space, leaving far too much space between defragmented files. As a result, future files stored are often initially fragmented. I find this issue a HUGE problem when recording over-the-air HDTV broadcasts, where files often exceed 5 GB.

    Thanks for your post.

    Regards,

    Martin

  14. Hi Marty,

    Mainly,Different strokes for different folks.

No personal experience with Diskeeper 9.

The speed that impresses me most is how quickly Defraggler has matured in just one year.

Look up member "thm" posts and you will find some very informative threads about Defraggler versus other defrag products. Go back several months to get all the data. There are other users threads also but "thm" search on member name will lead you to most of them.

Nothing beats info from people who have used many products.

    Good hearing from you,

    :) davey

    Thanks for your reply, davey.

With due respect... I did express my interest that everyone refrain from making "moot" comments, and while your comments are interesting, I find that they have no intrinsic value (unless your goal is to market Defraggler) regarding my post.

    Thanks again,

    Martin

  15. Anyone have any perspective (or reason) why Diskeeper is (apparently) LIGHTENING FAST compared to every other defragmeter, including Defraggler?

In addition to Defraggler, I use a FREE version of Diskeeper, specfically Diskeeper Lite 9 version 9.0.528.0 from 2005. Therfore, I would appreciate those who refrain from making moot or sarcastic comments regarding the issue of "FREE" software versus all other defragmenting software.

I should also mention that when I defrag, the following batch file commands are executed to disable antivirus, firewall and other related software...

    sc stop AntiVirService

    sc config AntiVirService start= disabled

    sc stop AntiVirScheduler

    sc config AntiVirScheduler start= disabled

    sc stop BITS

    sc config BITS start= disabled

    sc stop wuauserv

    sc config wuauserv start= disabled

    sc stop SharedAccess

    sc config SharedAccess start= disabled

    sc stop wscsvc

    sc config wscsvc start= disabled

...as a result, slower defragmenters, like Defraggler, are NOT handicapped by issues of antivirus, firewall or related software.

Other than its ability to defrag a single file (versus the whole drive), performance-wise, thus far, I find only one issue why I prefer Defraggler over Diskeeper Lite 9.

    Thanks,

    Martin

  16. I see you've added the individual files for Google Web Accelerator, how about also excluding it's whole folder, this one:

    C:\Documents and Settings\%PC_ID%

    1. You'll first have to enable the view of Hidden Files and Folders (View the instructions from Microsoft to display them).
    2. Open CCleaner, click Options, Exclude, Add Folder, then browse to:
      C:\Documents and Settings\%PC_ID%
    3. Now set Hidden Files and Folders back to their default hidden view.

    Edit:

Never mind the above instructions, I just realized the %PC_ID% is the user profile name, duh a dumb moment on my behalf. Actually I don't see why CCleaner is removing the individual files you've already excluded, unless perhaps you're also using another cleaning program alongside CCleaner.

    Hey, Andavari!

Thanks again for replying to one of my posts. Your support is sincerely appreciated.

Yeah, I should have identified what I meant by the %PC_ID% notation. Glad you figured it out.

No other cleaner(s). But after I posted, I decided to uninstall CCleaner, and then reinstall it. I had been saving my .ini file in a separate directory and copying it back into the CCleaner directory each time I updated. This time I did not, and instead I re-entered the Registry and Google exclusions.

The new install and "fresh" .ini file (with freshly entered exclusions) seems to have resolved the problem. Of course, I will monitor this result for the next few days. Let's hope that it works! ;)

Many thanks again, Andavari for your kind reply.

    Best regards,

    Martin :)

  17. Hello again all!

This morning I decided to give Google's Web Accelerator software a spin with my dial-up service.

I am not that familiar with other acceleration software, but Google writes four (4) files to the HDD in C:\Documents and Settings\%PC_ID%\Local Settings\Temp. The files are...

    - GoogleWebAccWarden.exe.log

    - GoogleWebAcceleratorCache

    - GoogleWebAccelerator.pac

    - googlewebaccclient.exe.log

After running CCleaner, I discovered that, given my existing settings, the above files were deleted. This, of course, virtually eliminates the beneifs associated with Google's Web Accelerator.

I thought that adding the file locations/names to my EXCLUDE list would prevent CCleaner from deleting them. I was wrong. I believe the EXCLUDE list is strictly for the Registry Cleaner. Is this correct???

I would prefer not clearing (or unchecking) the "Temporary Files" box found under CCleaner/Applications/System.

    Presently, my .ini file reads...

  18. You can add those registry locations into the exclude list. Note the inputting of exclusions has to be done manually therefore taking a screenshot then pasting it into an image viewer is very helpful, that way you'll know exactly what to type in.

If CCleaner won't let you input the exclusions take a look at this thread to learn how to input them manually.

    Thank you very much, Andavari.

I did as you suggested and per your instruction, and the problem has been resolved. :)

    Thanks again!!

    Martin :D

  19. Hi All!

My first post regarding a recurring problem with CCleaner.

I've been a CCleaner (slim version) fan for well over a year and enthusiastically recommend (almost insisting) it to friends.

A few months ago, I added a TV tuner card to my PC, an Intel 2.8 GHz Pentium D with 1 GB RAM, etc. The tuner card uses audio and video codecs, and CCleaner's Registry scan likes to remove "Unused File Extensions" but there are a few that are IN USE and that's why I am posting here today.

I am updated to version 2.01.507 (slim version), and, in addition to several other extensions, Registry scan consistently wants to delete .ax, .pf and .s3 file extensions.

    1) .ax - a used file extension

If this file extension is deleted (without creating a .reg backup), the AC3Filter (audio codec) no longer runs and the software must be removed and reinstalled. Sadly, after reinstalling, CCleaner/Registry scan wants to delete the .ax file extension once again. The .ax file extension must be registered by the installing AC3Filter software, else it would not be available to the TV tuner software programs.

    2) .pf - a used file extension

Here, I am confused why CCleaner/Registry continues to add the prefetch extension, .pf, to the Unused File Extension list when the Windows/Prefetch directory is full and, among other programs that employ .pf extensions, Firefox's prefetch option is fully enabled.

    3) .s3 - a used file extension

The .s3 extension is intrinsic to my ATI graphics card and deleting it would compromise the s3 controller drivers. When I allow CCleaner/Registry to delete them (again, without creating a .reg backup), the ATI drivers and control center software would have to be removed and reinstalled.

Fortunately, CCleaner/Registry scan allows the user to uncheck "supposed" Unused File Extensions and I have been unchecking .ax, .pf and .s3 whenever I run CCleaner/Registry scan. Not related to .ax, .pf or .s3, the remaining file extensions ) are deleted without any complications or adverse effects to their respective software programs - as far as I know.

I am unaware of a CCleaner/Registry option to EXCLUDE "user specified" extensions, and would like to continue using the cleaning program. However, having to constantly uncheck "supposed" Unused File Extensions, when I know they are "in use" or intrinsic to necessary drivers and controllers, is becoming an annoying issue and is beginning to destroy my confidence in CCleaner's ability to work without harming or creating problems with software running on my PC.

Interestingly, this "Unused File Extension" issue did not appear to be a problem with previous versions of CCleaner, two or three releases ago. Unfortunately, I did not keep a copy of the downloaded (slim) program and therefore cannot test this statement. Then again, given the faithful CCleaner service that I have enjoyed and come to rely upon, as I mentioned previously, the Registry issue is destroying my confidence in CCleaner.

Prior to posting, I did conduct a search for "Unused File Extensions" and read most of the threads. After consistently reading that "Unused File Extensions" were SAFE to remove, specifically suggested more than twice by the forum moderator(s), I had to post my question because there are a few (on my system) that are NOT safe to remove.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and or guidance.

    Martin
