  1. Check your computer manufacturer website for a driver reset program.

    21429[/snapback]

Have not been able to deal with this lately..so I am back. The CD drives open and close. I went to system/hardware device..checked the properties on each drive. It said the device drivers were found, but can not find the hardware (CODE 41). I tried to do a restore on the drivers, but the system said I did not have any drivers to restore..I tried to update the drivers, but it said I have the best drivers for these drives on my system....how do I get my computer to recognize the drives.. Unfortunately, this sytem is a "DELL CLONE", and I can not contact the "manufacturer".

Drives Found: HLDTST CD ROM GCR-8481B

    SONY CD-RW CRX216E

My first post concerning this problem occurred after I updated to the latest version of ccleaner and ran it. Coincidentaly..I did the same on my system at work , and I can not access the CD drive on that system at all.

Anyone have a solution for me??? Really Desperate!

    Thanks

    Doris

  2. Not sure what is going on , but both of my CD drives are not available. When I pull up My Computer, they are not there, and when I put a disk in the message says "can't find dvd rom". I did run CCleaner a few days ago, but not sure if this could have cause a problem??? Could I have deleted something I shouldn't have?Any ideas on how to "reconnect" these devices. I do not know where to begin....THANKS

  3. my is 512kbps for $SGD45 per month... slowpoke...

I have been given a good price from AOL once I told them I was canceling due to lower prices..$9.95/mo unlimited dial-up, (business use) I have been with them a long time and I hate the hassle of switching email etc. Comcast Cable..Maryland...way too expensive, but I have it at home $42.00/mo. I need something cheaper!

  4. I was just wondering how does this forum gets cleaned up? How long do posts stay? Do they automatically get cleaned after a period of time? Where do they go? Maybe this has been addressed already? Just curious.

  5. I am polite, I am not rude, I am just informating about the downsides of such software. And if you wish to bash me, then please do so.

I think it is good that you help people as nicely as you can.

And as for not wanting to help, I took the time to read the post, I informed the user of the downsides of the software and provided a link to an imho better alternative.

You may be intitled to your own opinion, but you orignial reply did not even touch on KM1's problem question. This forum has been and will continue to support its users and not bash other programs. If he uses Word and likes it , so be it. I do too and wouldn't change. The help I've gotten here , and respect for others has been the best I've seen. That's why I keep returning.

  6. I've tried and re-tried before reporting this.  Let me first make sure we're talking about the same setting.  Which setiting in CCleaner did you turned on to clean the most frequently used program shortcuts in your Start Menu?

    Thx!

It did for me. I have XP and the lastest version. I did not want it too. I forgot to uncheck the box. In Issues, File Integrity, I have both boxes checked. Do you? Most CCleaner users check everything anyway.

  7. Would it be more clear for the awerage user to pump up the version-number even more?

Lets say, put a letter behind the version if its "only" a bugfix?

many of my friends are so called newbees, and if it doesnt have a clear higher number they say its not worth updating...

People are kind of lasy, I update every update there is, but I can understand that many people arent so hasty when the updates is: x.xx.xx1 to x.xx.xx2

Maybe its the x.xx.XX that is the trouble? Maybe x.xxa to x.xxb would be more cclear?

Anyway, its my few cents... :)

Another bit of info for some, FYI, maybe you already know, but adding on to a version number ie 1.18 to 1.19 usually means a minor change, probably based on some user input, bug fix etc.

Going from 1.18 to 2.0 usually means a major upgrade to the program. At least that was the protocol when I was programming...which was awhile ago :)

It bugs me when a major upgrade is released and low and behold there are major bugs in the program. Are they testing this stuff. A big problem is getting the upgrade out ASAP, to make the $..then fix the problems. We are the being used to test the programs after we have paid big$'s...OK I've said enough..sorry , just one of those things that gets me going.

  8. Hello! Will I still be able to read .pdf files? If I delete from start folder instead of disable from msconfig? hugs. Rose

I think so. It works for me. Anyone else have suggestion? I would start with the startup folder before going into msconfig..thats just me being cautious.

  9. TuPLaD: Change your color depth to 32-bit.

OK This sounds stupid, I'd show you my desktop screen, but don't know how to copy it here.. Also, it take too long for my stuff to load up, and then a long while to log on to the internet, even with cable modem...Not much stuff on desktop, I still haven't run HiJack this yet, which may clean up alot of startup stuff .

  10. Hey steve1368 and everyone who reads this,

You may not like what I have to say, but it's my opinion from experience. Other people's may be different. But here goes...

First off, I recommend not using TuneUp 2004, I use to use it. But, I stopped for a few reasons.

#1. I don't know what exactly it is fixing and so on...

#2. You can find other programs that will do a better job and you actually know what they do.

#3. Before I knew any better, I installed tweak programs and maintaince programs like TuneUp 2004, and it actually slowed down my system. I stop using all tweak programs (reformatted) and my system has been stable for a long time and not single error.

#4. Most programs do pointless tweaks that doesn't even effect Windows or performance.

    As for Registry Cleaners...

No registry program is the same, some clean pointless entries and some actually clean really good. I have only found 1 registry program I like, Registry Mechanic is by far the best one I have ever used (I have tried tons of them). RegscrubXP is a joke, yes a joke. It's pointless, it finds tons of entries with "null" values. Sure you can clean them, but Windows will just rebuild them after every reboot or when you start the program. Alot of registry cleaners will do that to make it look like it's actually cleaning, but it's pointless, a waste of time, and it can frag your registry.

I recommend this... (This is what I do when I want to create a System Restore/Backup).

Run CCleaner and fix all issues, then run Registry Mechanic, then run NTREGOPT, and then Yes to reboot. Then run a defrag program (Windows or whatever, I use O&O Defrag), then run Page Defragmenter, and then reboot. Now, run System Restore, and create a new restore point. Then run ERUNT if you want to backup your registry. I then use Disk Cleanup and clear all but my recent restore point (to save space). You are now done.

I hope this will help some.

Thanks! I was about to do some cleanup.

  11. thanks for the CCleaner program.. i recently installed the newest release and it seems to work well.. good job..

Just want to say Keep It Simple. I hope this website stays this way. Don't all those extras. I just stay in the forum section and like it because it is very basic. Thanks

I hope you're using Firefox.  If you are you can safely uninstall Starwood Toolbar and AOL Toolbar.

You may also wish to use Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative.

Great...now what? It looks like I can safely remove most of this stuff. How do I do that? And no, I am not using Firefox or the other software you are referring too. Once removed, how often will I need to do this? I suddenly feel very lost out here. Can you walk me through this?

And, once removed, what is left?

    Thanks.....

  13. If they're too lazy to read what the version/build changes are then I'd say its their own loss, they can deal with any potential problems that may exist in previous versions that may have been fixed in the next build of a version of any software, not just CCleaner.

I don't really think removing the last two version identification numbers, and then sticking a letter at the end would help at all, it would still trigger to those lazy folk that it isn't a major update therefore they wouldn't update until they see a full version number leap.

It is just a way for those programers to track their changes, and as the updates are done, we know when the last time it was we updated.

The way I see it is if it isn't broken...I just updated yesterday from a version 1.17...I was not having any problems, so I wasn't planning to update. But then I read the improvements being made, so I said , why not.

Appreciate those who started this program and keep improving on it, based on user input.

  14. ahhh the all powerful TwistedMetal!!!!! *bows down in fear*  :P

Appreciate the respect given to those of us who are new at this, learning and looking for support from those more knowledable. And you do not tolerate anyone who abuses this site. Appreciate that too! It is what keeps me coming back.

Is there a spell check on here? I usually spell correctly , but then there are those times when you just aren't sure.

Thanks Again to all of you!

  15. I was at the bank yesterday and the teller was discussing the movie with a customer. She has not seen ANY of the Star Wars movies. I couldn't believe it. I said, you must have been born after 1977, she laughted and said yes. She said she grew up in a household of girls and all they watched was some Pony show??

Anyway, I grew up with the Batman series, am a big "superhero" fan, (Batman 1st, of course). I told her that I am looking forward to the newest Batman movie. I have three sons and have gotten them hooked on it too. When they were little they had all the batman toys, even dressed up in capes. It was so cute. I am female, and love this stuff. (I played with Barbies when I was little, I kept all of it thinking I would have girls, Oh Well)

Looking forward to the Star Wars Movie...I have seen them all. Saw the first one (actually 6th in the series) back in 1977 in the movies. If you did not see it at that time, you would not understand the impact of seeing such technology on a big screen. It just was not seen before. When the words first came across the screen scrolling into space...WOW, that sent chills down everyones spines. Try to explain that to the kids these days. And to think the original movie was done on such a small budget.

    Have A Good Day!

It is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks. It does not target specific programs/URLs, just the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites. As a result, false positives are imminent and unless you are sure what you're doing, you should always consult with knowledgable folks (e.g. the forums) before deleting anything.

Here is the log file. I just ran it this morning after downloading the software and having run CCleaner and spyware removal software:

I have no idea what this all means and if I use this software again, I would not know what to do either. How can I find out what to keep, and/or what not.

THANKS....I am always wanting to clean stuff up on the pc if it is not necessary.

P.S. This pc is used by the whole family but I do know my one son does the downloading. I have warned him over and over about downloading stuff on here.

  17. I have seen these discussions in the forum. Is this something I need to be concerned about? Don't know what it is, but when I looked at someone else's post I thought I should inquire?? Does this have something to do with spyware?

    Thanks!

  18. I ran CCleaner today. I saw HOTKEYS and was not sure what they are, do I delete them? Also Under TOOLS, Startup, all these programs that load at startup, are they necessary. If I delete them, what will that do? There are some programs loading that I am sure I don't need at startup, but will the program be unaffected? Will the programs load again at startup at some other point in time?

I am very cautious running anything that DELETES. When I run my spyware programs, anything it finds I save to a quarantine file, in case I find out later that I need some file.

    Thanks!!

  19. Ditto..I did not see any mention of leaving the computer on with high speed internet allows hackers, viruses , worms, etc. to access your computer. So, if you leave it on, make sure you have the firewalls, etc..the only way to prevent this access is by turning the pc off. And, some people just turn it OFF..it should be Shutdown through windows, not just turning off the power button. That can cause problems too.

Just had to mention the above... :) Couldn't just pass it up..no offense :)
