1. OK, I have been using my wireless network for my home systems for quite sometime, but it was not until I got my new laptop last month that I realized my network was not secure..meaning anyone in the neighborhood can log on to my network. I have read a few articles on setting up the wirless network, but can not find the right info to secure it. So, I turn to you all.

I am using a Netgear wireless card and router, I can not remember any default login or password? Do I need this info to set this up or do I do this through my Windows XP SP2 software?

    Confused!

  2. Good advise! That usually happens when there's a new update and everyone is trying to update Ad-Aware at a similiar time.

Sometimes however the update "may" work if you manually download and install the new reference file from the download page.

I had the same problem with the last download/update.

But has anyone had a virus after downloading Ad-Aware??? Anyone else have this problem. Not me, but a friend said she had a virus after downloading the free version...she said she checks for viruses, etc.

I have been using for over a year, and have not had a problem. Just wondering if anyone else had experienced this using this software.

  3. Yeah, my mistake. I shouldn't have posted when I was sleepy.

It removes the last opened key/location that was opened in Regedit, this one to be precise (it's in winapp.ini):

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Regedit\LastKey

Thanks, that was the original question I had. So, OK that I check it everytime I use CCleaner?? So far I have not checked it while cleaning, so do I have alot of junk built up?

  4. what? Im totally lost.

Sorry...guess that made NO Sense! I read another entry you had under the DVD/CD Mega Problem post. My problem got solved with my two CD drives..

Then I just wanted to say Thanks!

    That's about it.

  5. Give Lunarsoft.net a try; the majority of what you mentioned is discussed there. ;)

    25937

Checked out Lunarsoft....great site. Why I like this one...simplicity. I can easily maneuver my way around in here. If there is too much stuff on the screen, it's too much for me to handle.

  6. I had the same problem when i was transporting computer to a new case, my drives were not showing up and i was bugging out for like 45 minutes. Stupid me I didnt even plug in the powercords, and i have a see through window.

Hey, I responded to your post under another problem I had...But I like your picture of the canon? I felt like using one last week on this pc! I am better now.

  7. If I had known you had a Dell I would have told you to download Dell Driver Reset Tool, it can fix allot of stuff. However since you've fixed it it's too late to tell you.

"HLKM\Current\Controlset\Control\Class" has a load of stuff in there, hardware related from what I could tell looking at a few subkeys on my system. I don't know what you can expect to happen or if you've broken anything. Hopefully Windows will automatically detect all your devices again or automatically restore that section from a last known good configuration.

    25638

Thanks...I deleted a few subkeys(FOLDERS) under the {4D36E965-E25-11CD-BFC1-08002BE10318}, BUT ONLY DELETED THE UPPER AND LOWER FILTERS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE SCREEN UNDER THIS KEY. What a nightmare figuring all this out. I was about to give it all up and call a technician!

I think you may have suggested this Dell Reset before, someone did. I tried the Dell Driver Reset Tool...did not work for me. Not sure why. I had bought a "DELL" from a third party...not doing that again. I found out while searching Dell Site, my Service Tag, etc on the pc, but I am not registered with them...I may check into this since I do own the pc, it is just that I bought it from someone else, he delivered the pc which does not say Dell, and when windows starts up there is no Dell Logo, but turns out it is really a DELL, which I found out later on. I paid way too much, and he basically screwed me over.....I will only buy directly from the manufacturer now because I did this once before. I guess I did not learn my lesson the first time.

    Thanks!

  8. Okay, I'm assuming these are Parallel ATA drives, right?  Obviously the power is fine, because the lights come on and the drives open.  If both drives went "bad" at the same time, I have a possible idea of what might be wrong.

Most likely, both drives are using the same ATA cable (the gray ribbon-looking cable).  If Windows is no longer recognizing either of them, it is possible that either the cable shorted, or the slot on your motherboard went bad.  Obviously, cables and ports don't go faulty often, but you might be surprised.

Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the drives?  All you have to do is right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware Tab, and then click Device Manager.  Once you've opened the Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives, and uninstal each drive by right-clicking it and selecting Uninstal.  After removing both, restart Windows (you could also just choose to scan for harware changes, but restarting is more effective, since it also resets your processes).  Windows should automatically reinstall the drives.

So if this doesn't work, just get a new PATA cable, and maybe that will solve your dilemma.

First ..thanks I opened the pc and the cables seem fine..I also tried the uninstall, but all along the issue was in the registry. Not Sure how this happened.....But

OK..whoever Glenn is on this forum...your fix was correct all along..I just did not get the Upper Filter, Lower Filter thing...I had to go into the registry and delete those as you had posted. I finally get it after all this time.....Now, I did unfortunately delete a few other sub keys by mistake and not sure if that will be an issue...but the CD drives are working. I have been working on this issue for TOO LONG! I was almost going to just take the pc to some computer place and pay someone to fix it. So, I saved myself the $$$, but my time put into it was finally worth it.

  9. I figured no amount of "tinkering" would work.

Once your system is fixed and running properly I'd highly recommend that you make a whole system backup, you can use the built-in Microsoft Backup utility to do such a full backup. Use it by running: Start > Run > "%SystemRoot%\system32\ntbackup.exe"

    25438

OK..here it is. Somewhere along the way someone suggested a fix in the registry. I have been on this all day. I went to the Dell Website support forum. I finally got it. I deleted the upper key and lower keys in the HLKM..etc. The drives are up and running.

I had checked in my device manager for the drives and had a CODE 41..this other guy had a CODE 39...same fix. We are both happy.

Just thought I would pass along..not sure why this happened?? I did however delete some other subkey under the HLKM\current\controlset\control\class....etc. not sure what problem may arise from that????

  10. From Microsoft XP Resource Kit:

Error Code 41 - Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

A driver was loaded but Windows cannot find the device. This happens when Windows does not detect a non-Plug and Play device.

If the device was removed, uninstall the driver, install the device, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver. If the hardware was not removed, obtain a new or updated driver for the device.

If the device is a non-Plug and Play device, a newer version of the driver might be needed. To install non-Plug and Play devices, use the Add Hardware wizard. Click Performance and Maintenance on Control Panel, click System, and on the Hardware tab, click Add Hardware Wizard.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.

Even if the device was not removed, you may want to remove it and try the complete uninstall / re-install.

    From Windows XP Knowledge Base:

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41 after you remove Easy CD Creator in Windows XP

    1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

    2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

    4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

    6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

    7. Restart your computer.

Although this is specific to removing Easy CD Creator, others cite this as a general fix for Code 41.

    22547

OK...I am over my head here. I did go to Microsoft.com and found this fix that you have noted. I am ready to try it...but in the registry I see one key...since both keys are the same values, what does Upper Filter and Lower Filter mean?? If I delete the first "Upper Filter" where is the lower one.?

Anyone? I will give this a try to get my CD drive working again...otherwise I have no clue.

  11. You could use it, but at your own risk!

More clearly explained: I'm saying that program JV16 PowerTools has a built-in feature that will remove all current hardware settings from a system, which will cause Windows to re-detect them. The warning "use at your own risk" was because I noticed when I had used it on my Win98 system (just as a test mind you) that it really created a mess, e.g.; more problems versus just formatting.

The BIOS settings are in your system boot menu, e.g.; on some systems you press the F2 or F12 key when you see the Windows logo before the system starts, then you enter the BIOS settings to make sure all drives are detected in the BIOS and enabled via the BIOS.

I don't know if it's current or not, it was something I just stumbled upon purely by accident or coincidence and remembered this thread started by Ulimate Predator.

I would think that Microsoft "may" or "should" have some KB article about this issue, try searching Microsoft Help & Support.

    25230

I was about to go there and try to find an answer. Meanwhile I removed Easy CD Creator...no change..I didn't think it would

I check System/Device Manager/DVD....both my drives have a yellow symbol with an point ! in the middle...when I click properties this is what is stated:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

I tried that ....no good...so now I am off the check out Microsoft...thanks

  12. And I'm checking that cdgone.zip patch....

    25187

I think your problem sounds similar to mine...see MY CD Drive's are not there....I have been trying everything today. I checked out the link that was suggested, but that fix cdgone.zip patch has a date from 1999..2002. I seem to have had this problem when I downloaded the last version of ccleaner and ran it. I must have removed something. Someone suggested removing some registry values and I am really afraid to do that. I have a CODE 41...something to do with Easy CD Creator..I am not sure about removing these registry entries...

When I reboot the system, the lights flash on my 2 CD drives as if they are there, but my system does not recognize them...

    Any ideas??

    the cdgone.zip patch....is that a current patch??

  13. Well since it isn't an actual Dell manufactured PC I have no ideal if it would even work, you may actually cause problems running it and allowing it to make system changes. On my system I just ran the downloaded file, it installs the program which you can then run from the start menu program group named:

Dell Accessories > Driver Reset Tool

    22737

OK..I am trying to fix my CD problem, still. I tried the driver reset tool from Dell, someone suggested..did not do the job. I also tried checking the bios and found the CD drives both set on auto..also a suggestion.

When I shut down and restart the computer the drives both light up as if being recognized, but I can not use either of them

    1. Sony CD-RW CRX216E

    2. GCR-8481B

Anyone Else Have an idea as to why these drives are not being recognized???

  14. I did some searching and this seems like a very strange error. But your right your son isnt the only one with the problems. Look here:

Thanks. We checked out the SOCOM3 site. Lots of problems there. I guess we have to see what Router we have. I don't get what DMX they are talking about.

Thanks for searching this out for us. We will have to try and work through their forum.

  15. Tell him to make sure he turns the system off before he plugs it in. I have one and I have noticed that you cant plug it in while the system is on.

    24503

Thanks. He said he tried that, and said he is not the only one with this problem.

  16. My son plays SOCOM3, on PS2 and his headset will not work, but works for other on-line games he plays. He said the headset works fine for SOCOM2, but since he got SOCOM3, he can not hear or talk. Someone told him something about opening up "ports"????

On days if you go out for a short trip, leave it on but on suspended/power-save mode. If you leave for many hours then turn it off.

What, I too can not believe that leaving the pc on for two weeks straight can actually kill the thing. Something else must be going on....computers are left on all of the time. I tend to shut down only due to spyware, etc from the cable connection..and conservation...etc. Anyone else think leaving on a pc can cause it to burn out.

  20. Not sure what you mean by Dell Clone and even if you don't have a valid service tag which would be the case if you bought the system used from an individual you can get the service tag information transferred to you in your name.

Dell has a utility called Dell Driver Reset Tool v1.02L A01, direct download:

    http://ftp.us.dell.com/app/R92578.EXE

    22578

Thanks...well, by "clone", I mean, I bought this pc from a guy who built it to my specs...sold it as his, but he said it is a Dell PC. I can not contact Dell for support, and this guy and I no longer do business together. So, I feel like I am on my own. I will never buy a pc this way again. When I start up the pc..there is no DELL logo appearing..OK, now back to my drive problems. I downloaded the driver you suggested...now what do I do??

    Thanks for your help

    Doris

  21. Also if you check you bios there could be a problem there. Make sure they are set to master and slave and all that good stuff

    22533

Can I check the bios without doing a restart and going in that way...to system setup?? I think I may have checked this awhile ago, and I think it was good, but can't be positive??
