error: Unable to determine file system type ?

I've only just download Recuva, because I accidentily deleted lots of important files yesterday from external backup harddisk 

 

I thought I'd start with a scan of that harddisk, but...

whether I choose just the external harddisk as the location to scan or more specific a specific map on that harddisk, I get the same error:

'unable to determine file system type'

 

Doesn't seem to make any difference whether I opt for all files or just documents...

And it DOES work for scanning the internal harddisk of my laptop, also scanning another external harddisk.

The external harddisk I'm trying to scan has been checked for errors prior to starting Recuva by the way.
