CC Cleaner RELEASE version not only wiped out my Firefox bookmarks but even my ability to make new ones. Just a few from long ago. I tried following Mozilla’s fix and couldn’t do anything. Did a thorough uninstall and reinstall. Nothing.
If you can’t save new bookmarks in Firefox then that is a Firefox issue not a CCleaner one.
Have you uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox?
I updated to the latest version again last night and after running a Scan and cleaning it deleted all my bookmarks, settings in Mozilla FF. I could not even recreate them from syncing or backup. It kept telling me a security software was prohibiting it. That’s exactly the same issue I had a few weeks ago when I installed this version. It was a Beta version so I could just revert and it fixed the issue but not this time. Something is off with the new CC and I am reluctant to use it for anything now. Might not renew my subscription if this isn’t taken serious by the developers.
If you haven’t managed to fix this there is a YouTube that explains how to fix the issue. It’s quick and easy. I can’t link it here otherwise I would.
Hi,
This happened to me as well. I did quite a bit of other things that weren’t necessary as I went down the rabbit hole a little bit. Renaming the favicon-sqlite and places-sqlite and deleting the associated files worked for me. It also restored my ability to make bookmarks as well. I would try this first before going to any other topics in firefox that basically didn’t solve the problem. This worked for me.
O.k. I can’t include the link but if you click on the error notification where your bookmark toolbar used to be. It should read something like this. “The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox’s files is in use by another application. Some security software can cause this problem.”
Or google it and it will take you to firefox help page.
I got now the same problem. I was trying out CCleaner for the first time. But then i found out, that i cannot set new Bookmarks anymore. Such things may happen with free sorftware. But on a software with an option for paid subscription? Sorry but that is a huge fail. I have read, that others in that forum talked 3 months ago about that issue. Then it was still Beta. Can happen. But this error persists and stands here since 16 DAYS! It is neither fixed nor adressed. Users are not able to put a proper instruction for a fix here due prohibition of links. No one else is thinking or willing to give such instruction. This topic is already 16 days old. For that i have to pay 14 $ per year? I really thought about doing that but that thought is gone now.
By the way, to get this error done you need just to rename ONLY the file places.sqlite in the firefox folder to something else. Firefox will make a new one without deleting bookmarks. This file is the actual cause for the problem.
Same here, hours of trying to understand what they’re talking about. It also changed the appearance of all my screens.
To have something like this and fail to warn people who are not computer geeks is near criminal.
See my 04-Sep-2025 post in suej’s Lost bookmarks for links to relevant Firefox support articles and another possible solution if CCleaner v7.x deletes or locks your Firefox bookmarks.

Can anyone please share some key words to use to try to find the video to fix the “Renaming the favicon-sqlite and places-sqlite” problem.
FIreFox’s instuctions seem to have been translated from some other language. When I tried to follow it, it seems some nouns got lost in translation. Thanks in advance
Just happened to me also. I won’t ever be using ccleaner again. what a colossal *** up of a glitch.
Hi Keyboard_Zombie:
If you cannot restore your most recent bookmark backup as suggested in my 04-Sep-2025 post <above> then see my 07-Jan-2026 post in suej’s Lost bookmarks about ways to repair your existing places.sqlite and/or favicons.sqlite files.
