Apple is really a niche product.
They usually lock you into limited functionality.

Seems to me that neither microsoft nor apple put much energy into virus control.
With the exception of XP I think Microsoft have made some efforts with Vista and Windows 7 to try and minimise the problem of Malware i.e. address space layout randomisation and UAC control.
The problem is malware coders are getting more and more sophicated with their attacks that eventually there's always some tiny way to root a machine.
There's only so much Microsoft can do so people should also wise up about the Internet, don't visit dodgy web sites, don't install cracked software and keep a look out for any suspious behaviour.

And on top of that, far too many people simply don't update.

I agree with you. Even if I didn't I wouldn't argue 'cause you know a bunch more about this than I.
Still I think the decision by both companies is financially motivated. And one big difference is that apple said it out loud.
However...
I must say here that common sense as a preventative is not effective. I once clicked on a link in Yahoo news about the Dalai Lama, and my computer immediately shut down with a pop and restarted...restarted, I'm tellin ya!
If I had not had Powershadow running there is no telling what would have been installed after the restart.
It was not a hardware problem like heat or power supply that shut the machine down.
And the nasty link was gone from yahoo news not more than 5 minutes after I clicked on it.
Microsoft Security Essentials is a really good product - so I would like to think that it's Apple not caring - did you see the second link I posted a few days ago?

Yep, sure did. What arrogance. Apple for sure wins the I DON'T CARE contest. Could you agree that microsoft is maybe second...in this two person race?

Many, many years ago visiting ZDNet would cause an automatic restart all via some messed up JavaScript I suppose. To this day I still block their whole website, never to visit again!

Once you filter out some "look at meeeeeeeee!" and "linux is the best thing since sliced bread !1!!11!" writers, there are some very interesting articles on ZDNet.
I agree, MSSE is an excellent piece of software, especially compared to the non-existant Apple Security Essentials (Apple...deWORMer? )

There is a virus scanner on OS X.
It detects 4-5 types of malware, via non-generic signatures.

Guess you might say that the lack of a dewormer stems from their their core attitudes.

You win 9001 internets

Enough to win a Golden Apple?
Too punny!
From one who uses Windows, Linux & OSX (I own and use each OS at least once per week - OSX used on a PowerBook when away from my home office) I maintain that both Windows and OSX require antivirus software (for OSX I use ClamXav which is still free at this stage BUT not all that great) as I have always considered that sooner or later OSX will get hit.
Check this one out: Mac Security Site"]Mac Security Site[/url]
I do not see Linux being a target in the short term (to many variations) but those mongrels that create viruses etc. are out there with nothing better to do with their time.
Personally my No.1 choice is Windows (XP Pro better than Windows 7, but I use both) No.2 is Ubuntu (the latest version) then OSX bringing up the rear. I was forced into all 3 OS's when I was working full time, as I spent many years selling/supporting the Graphics Design / Print-Publishing Industry (magazines & newspapers) where Mac is still big, No. 1, Windows No.2 and Linux used as Servers, why? I really am not sure.........I just had to grin and bear it.
And for people who like big buttons you might find this

Interesting spin on the trends at apple.
I remember that video, heheh.
I remeber reading a news article about that video; the guy that made it got fired from best buy because of it. I think he sued.
