I believe most Americans like myself, find the British accent charming and pleasing, especially I would think when listening to the opposite gender. What reaction do you have listening to us? In a hundred million years I can't imagine it would be pleasing unless it is just the novelty of it.
Which British accent would that be slowday?
I know what you mean, and I quite like most American accents. I won't say which I don't like as there's probably someone on here who speaks them.
EDIT: If the above link is down, a good guide to the many accents/dialects here:
I don't mind most American accents but there's something about Beyonc? Knowles that really annoys me.
I've been to many states: Texas, California, Las Vegas, Miami, New York but if I had to choose I think New York is my favourite.
Now I have a question for Americans involving a well known British actor Hugh Laurie who plays a doctor in the TV series House.
I have no issues with Hugh's acting abilities, however I'm not so sure about his American accent he sounds a little weird.
Does he sound American enough??

I live in Massachusetts, so I'm in the most accent-less English part of the United States.
Dennis I've tried your web site link but when I try to play samples I get error 404 - Unfortunately the page you are attempting to load may have moved or may not exist.
Maybe some YouTube links of Rab C Nesbitt might help??

Richard there is a little tickbox on that 404 page which says 'only searches everyone can play'
Does that help?
I typed in Huddersfield and listened to one of Hazel's neighbors being interviewed.

Lets have a talk some time, so you can compliment my accent
As for Hugh Laurie, I find his accent to be really good! However, he doesn't sound like he's from New Jersey where the show takes place

Hello All,
redhawk, I was just running my CCleaner and really did not intend to sign on, just quickly peruse the forum. When I saw your post concerning Hugh Laurie I just could not restrain myself. House is at the very top of my favorites along with JAG. If my t.v. ever went out during an episode I would probably have a myocardial infarction. Dr. Gregory House is listed on my emergency medical information as my diagnostician and Sir Anthony Hopkins as my psychiatrist. Hugh's accent is as American as one can get and would fit in almost anywhere here in the states. His acting simply keeps me in stitches and I never miss a marathon. Nothing else is allowed to go on in this house during that time. Hugh's barking orders and sniping at everyone reminds me of my First Sergeant who saved my life years ago. Take care and have a good one.

That page is down for me as well Richard, so I've another list of sound samples I'll add to that above post as well as this one.
This site was more user-friendly.
For Dennis's area (NE) I clicked on #23 (White male, twenties, student, Tyne and Wear).
It saved in Downloads then opened with WinMediaPlayer.
That was the nearest I could find to my area as well, although there's a trace of Tyneside in his accent.
Pretty good guess.
EDIT: That first link is loading now, and I agree with Kroozer, it isn't very user friendly but I chose it for it's visual impact of the number of differing accents in a relatively small country:
I made all selections based on Google map.
Can't seem to match Hazel's area with the offerings. I guessed on two items.
I selected #54 (White female, late-40s, born in Salford, Lancashire, England. A librarian.)
and #73 (White female, born 1983, raised Manchester. Student.}
My fave tv spot for English accents is PBS's Antiques Roadshow UK.
BTW, Colorado is omitted. We're not important.
Have posted this link before...

In my part of the world of each Yorkshire we have the worse accent in England..even the students at the University produced a book to help undestand the accent !!

Hugh Laurie does such a good job of it I didn't know he was British 'till somebody told me. :-)

We're not giving up the recipes for "Yorkshire Pud", and "Gregs Stotties" Fluff. That would be too much.
I have a special recipe.... .for toast!
