[Question about older additions of CCleaner.]

I was reading the changes to an very old version of CCleaner (v2.34.1200) and it said

 

"- Improved Index.dat cleaning by deleting ones not locked by the system."

 

 

 

I used to use the build right before it (2.33 free version) on XP way back when. This statement seems to me that if I were signed in it would not delete the main history/cookie/ and cache  index.dat files of that user account, since they were locked I believe. I also remember there being an index.dat file option, though. What exactly was being deleted?

Were they being overwritten but not deleted, but then in the 2.34 version they switched to deleting instead??

Just a bit confused.

[Question about index.dat file deletion.]

I know index.dat is not really used anymore, but my question relates to them, as I the computer I'm trying to figure out something on is on XP and used old IE browsers.

 

 

Lets say I wanted to clean the temp internet files index.dat file on a machine running XP. 

 

What exactly is happening here? I know the content is removed, but..

 

Is the folder "Temporary Internet Files" being deleted as a whole? (thus that folder has a new creation date)

 

Is the index.dat (which resides in the above folder) file being deleted or just cleaned? I.E if I used CCleaner would the index.dat file have a new creation date, or remain the same?

damn, v2.33, a super old machine indeed.

can't vouch on such an old version (memory not that good) but CC should say CC Pro or CC Free in the top left corner when opened. (right above the version number)

 

what SP is that XP on?

and just to clarify, how are you determining that all users are being cleaned?

when you Analyse do you see other user accounts listed?

 

can you provide a screenshot?

It was SP3, Home edition. I wasn't sure if all users were being cleaned, although the Guest account seemed to have been.. Would the Guest account count as the public (all users) account? I.E you could clean the guest account from the current logged in user (admin)

 

Also I was wondering, would the CCleaner downloader usually put a desktop icon or something on the other user accounts after installation for all versions? I suppose the guest account may have been cleaned individually if that were the case.

 

I'm going to download that specific older version soon on windows 10 since my old computer does not work anymore.

multi-user cleaning is (should be???) only available in the Pro version.

the Free version will clean the currently logged-on user AND the Public (All Users) account.

 

what is your CC version, Windows version?

have you added any INCLUDES?

do you use winapp2.ini or any other enhancements to CC?

 

 

 

Just fyi, I'm trying to figure out if this was possible on a super old system. (Its not in use anymore)  The version is 2.33.1184   

I see no indication that it was pro. I don't believe I used INCLUDES or winapp2/other enhancements, but if you know a way to check i can tell you for sure. System is Windows XP

I always thought it only worked on the account you ran it on, but apparently this is not the case. When/what version did this become a feature?

[CCleaner and Chrome question]

I noticed that when I clear the history/cookies/peronal data from the Google Chrome browser, it does not clear all the data within the history file (It might clear some, I'm not entirely sure, but there is definitely some remaining)

 

Obviously I could use CCleaner to clear it, but I'm wondering why the browser can't do it now, since it works fine on other accounts. Is this a side effect of CCleaner?

No, ccleaner is not creating these (or any) files. Ccleaner uses a identify and remove techniques with hardcoded locations from which it detects if a software is there or not. If the detected location is found then a hardcoded set of disc locations and registry entries are removed directly; they are not moved to any temporary location first.

What I mean by that is this; On my old computer running XP, I have many index.dat files located in weird directories like TEMP. Even on accounts that I didn't use CCleaner on. Is this normal? When I google Index.dat file locations, I never see any in the TEMP directory. I have at least 10 or more index.files per account.  

 

Some internet history that was definitely recorded before I downloaded CCleaner can be found in index.dat files in TEMpP directories. I have no idea whether they were there before I downloaded CCleaner or after.

 

So is this normal? Or is something weird going on?

Those from Internet Explorer it definitely cleans.

 

As for the others I can't remember off hand, when you click Analyze or Clean it will display a Summary, clicking upon a summary item will display what has been deleted.

I'm not sure which file is the file that records Internet Explorer History as well as local files visited and all that stuff. (I can't check because my old computer broke) but as for the Windows 10 equivalent at the location USERS/ username/ app data/ local/ microsoft/ windows/ webcache/ webcacheV01.dat, it didn't delete any of it. Can I assume it didn't for the XP version as well?

Nope, this file has nothing to do with chrome. It just stores google searches.. possibly from the Google Toolbar.

 

I just would like to know if it was ccleaner that cleared the data. I dont see an option for application data on the ccleaner menu, so I dont know if it clears that file or not

I was going to find some google searches in the below file but couldnt find anything. I wasnt sure if that was because of ccleaner or not

 

For example, in the following location-

 

C:/Documents and Settings/username/Application Data/Google/Local Search History/google%2Eweb there are normally W files with google searches on them. But when I went to check there was nothing. I didnt think ccleaner touched application data, can somebody tell me if this was the case or not?

 

Currently have ccleaner v2.33.1184 on ms windows XP SP3
