  1. Sounds like a CCleaner bug perhaps.

It's unknown exactly what CCleaner targets because looking at the cleaning routine reveals nothing since it uses Piriform's own internal code for the cleaning, so it doesn't list things like seen in winapp2.ini. Which leads to a question are you using the winapp2.ini file or some download that adds extra cleaning into CCleaner? If so try disabling or removing them.

I think it is a BUG or a new feature that next version of CCleaner should break out......separate check box for website icons.

If you look in "Windows Explorer" section of CCleaner there is a "Thumbnail Cache" box.....I think there should be similar type on in Internet Explorer section.  This is why I posted this in the CCleaner Suggestion section.

  2. Perhaps Win7 stores the icons differently since it works on WinXP, or CCleaner is ignoring the read-only attribute.

    Edit:

Something I remembered: If you're by chance setting custom icons on some of your Favorites some websites will reset them back to the sites default favicon.

No custom icons.........it is the sites default icons that are getting cleared and being replaced by the Internet Explorer "E" icon.

Try this A/V software software site.......save link as FAV and he icon is picture of the guy/inventor.

Using CCleaner clears his face icon to IE "E".

  3. Something to try:

    1. Get the icons to show by visiting some of the websites.

    2. Go into your user profile folder, and then open the Favorites folder.

    3. Now that you're in the Favorites folder right-click and change the properties to read-only, even in-mass if you wish.

    4. Run CCleaner again and see if it can or can't remove the icons since the the properties where changed to read-only. If CCleaner can't remove the icons then the read-only parameter is providing protection against the icons being removed.

    Edit:

I didn't even realize I had did this on my system already and my icons stay intact. So it's worth a try.

Really good thought.........did as you said and not only in user profile but also online went and changed to Read-Only.....CCLeaner still cleared icon pic.

I check others that do NOT clear and they are not set as read only.

  4. When I try to do a print screen the IE drop down menus retract.

I do a agree with you....it is probably favicons.

What is odd is if I run CCLeaner V4.19 with "Temporary Internet Files" checked it clears some of the icons on the website favorites links from their logos/thumbnails to the IE "E" logo.  If I click on one of the links the icon will come back and stay there until I run CCleaner again.  If I uncheck "Temporary Internet Files" these are not cleared.  It is not on every icon/thumbnail.....but many of them.

  5. Icons/Pictures on website links/URLs you've created? If so those are called favicons.

I'm not sure if CCleaner actually cleans those or not because I don't see any cleaner listed for it.

No, just the ones the website creates.

It seems the section in CCleaner for "Internet Temp Files" clears these.........or some of them....not all.

If I uncheck this section they are OK....of course I want temp files to be cleaned so in predicament.

Older version did not seem to do this.

Anyway, I think it would be good that CCleaner separates those out not to be included in cleaning.

  6. OK....been a long time user of CCleaner and have several W7 64 bit PCs......all latest updates.

I use Avast & MalwareBytes to keep protected.

    I'm also a techy.

Anyway, I have not played around with CCleaner settings too much but I noticed every time I run the new CCleaner many of my icons "pics" in IE11 get cleared.  If I click on them they re-populate. I thought this had something to do with Explorer Thumbnail cache but realized after reading that was not IE. I then played around with the CCleaner IE settings and it appears the "Temporary Internet Files" clears these ? I'd like to keep these icon pics but be able to clear the other temp files......is there a way ?

It seems this was not an issue in previous versions ?......do not recall this clearing the icons.

Anyway, I have not played around with CCleaner settings too much but two issues I noticed.

    1) Everytime I run CCleaner many of my icons "pics" in IE11 get cleared.  If I click on them they re-populate.

    2) When I go into Gmail from Google.com it asks me to login.....I have google.com in my "Cookie to Keep" list in CCleaner.

If I uncheck "Cookies" in the cleaner this does not happen.  One note, it seems I DO stay logged into the account when I go to Google.com....just when I hit the Gmail button.

SOLVED: Had To Add "accounts.google.com" to Cookie to Keep list

    Thx !
