That's because the "portable.dat" dummy file mentioned above your post is not complete. It has to have this, and only this inside it, and then save it:
    #PORTABLE#

    portable_dot_dat.png

Good point, but as I mentioned, the executable files are very different too.  Any chance of getting the actual portable release of Recuva available via official channels again?

  2. I'm also looking forward to continued portable releases.  At least for me, I'm fine if it doesn't have the Performance Optimizer or Driver Updater or Software Updater, as I'm not planning on using these (much too much "feature creep" for my preference).

In the meantime, I noticed that the portable version v5.92 was replaced with v5.91 on the official ccleaner.com download page.  What's the story?  Was this intentional?  Is there a serious problem with v5.92 (besides the following, which has an easy workaround: https://community.ccleaner.com/topic/62829-592-portable-broken/ )?

I found a solution here in this forum.
I succeded in opening the rcsetup153.exe with 7Zip and to extract ist in a directory on an USB stick. The unpacked direectory contains the files recuva64.exe and recuva.exe. The first one runs without error.
So far and thanks to this forum

    Hi,

    You can try this one.

    1. Install the free version of Recuva using this link https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva/download/standard Once the download has completed, simply double-click the file to start the installation.
    2. Create a folder on a USB drive and name it anything that you would like. (e.g. Recuva Pro Portable)
    3. Browse to the program's installation folder (e.g. C:\Program Files\Recuva) and copy its files to the folder you created.
    4. Create a portable.dat dummy file inside of the folder you created.

To create the portable.dat dummy file:
    - Right-click on a blank area of the new folder > click New > Text Document
    - Replace the entire file name with "portable.dat" and click Enter.
    - You will be prompted to confirm the file extension change. Click Yes.

Just to let everyone know, neither of the above techniques will successfully create the most recent portable version of Recuva that was officially released.

The official portable Recuva release of v1.53.0.1087 was just 4,956,888 bytes for the 64-bit executable.

The current non-portable Recuva release of v1.53.0.1087 weighs in at a hefty 5,609,656 bytes for the 64-bit executable.  That's over a half a megabyte of unnecessary additional closed-source code doing who-knows-what.

When you try either of the above techniques, you will get the bloated release, and not the true portable version.

Hopefully, someday, a real person from Piriform/Avast will come to this forum and let us all know that a real portable version is available again.  Until then, I cannot recommend Recuva to others.

Does not seem to be present on the builds page https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva/builds.  It was there a week ago.  Will check if it was temporarily withdrawn for some reason or if the page has suffered from bitrot (the latter is more likely)

Still missing over 5 months later, and no updates to this thread.

What are the official links to the portable versions of Defraggler, Speccy, and Recuva?

We've got a couple of broken links as a result of moving recently to a new download server.  These will all be reestablished shortly.

What's your definition of "shortly"?  It's been about 4 months since we were promised the links to the portable versions would be restored, and still nothing.

What are the official links to the portable versions of Defraggler, Speccy, and Recuva?

Given Avast's recent problems and investigations into their actions, there is no way many of us are going to use closed-source installers.

  6. CCleaner does a solid job cleaning up Firefox profiles in the default storage locations.

Is there currently a way to have CCleaner clean up Firefox profiles (including compressing sqlite databases) that are not in default storage locations?

If not, will you implement it?

It will be totally acceptable if the user has to specify the storage locations, even if that means editing an .ini file manually.

  7. Well, it's been over 4 months, and no reply from anyone at Piriform.  It appears that no one from Piriform actually reads their own forum.  That's unfortunate, especially since they designate this forum as the place to "Post bug reports, suggestions and questions about CCleaner for Android".

Is Piriform about to go out of business?  I can't think of any other reasonable explanation as to why they would ignore their own customers.

  8. often suggested, never implemented - yet.

try a great little tool by EaseUS called Partition Master to resize partitions when the Windows Disk Management GUI can't do it due to data at the end of the partition.

Thanks.  I'll take a look at it.

Hopefully Piriform can implement this suggestion... especially since it's often suggested! :-)

  9. If you run the 32 bit on a 64bit machine, it will automagically hand over to the 64bit exe

Thanks. I didn't know that.  A small nit: I think you mean 64-bit operating system, not 64-bit "machine".

So it sounds like, for 64-bit operating systems, defraggler.exe, defragglershell.dll, and df.exe can all be deleted.

  10. I don't see anything in the documentation about it (perhaps I couldn't find it or perhaps the information is missing), but the portable version of Defraggler includes both the 64-bit and 32-bit versions of the GUI application, shell extension, and command line version.

Am I correct in understanding that the 64-bit version should always be used on 64-bit operating systems and the 32-bit version should always be used on 32-bit operating systems?

Thus, is it correct that for 64-bit operating systems, defraggler.exe, defragglershell.dll, and df.exe can all be deleted?

  11. From a command prompt, running "df64 /?" pops up a window with help for about 1/10th of a second, and then it disappears.  This makes it impossible to read.  Please respond to acknowledge that Piriform will fix this bug (my bug report for ccleaner for Android has not even received an acknowledgement response from Piriform even though it was posted over 3 months ago).

  12. That entry deletes old prefetch data, not just prefetch data for apps that no longer exist. At a certain age prefetch is useless (to some) while newer prefetch is pertinent (for most users if pcs). Thus prefetch which has been untouched is exactly what ccleaner's junk cleaning routine is useful for

Interesting, thanks for the feedback.  I tried it on a computer about a week after a fresh OS install, and it cleaned out a bunch of Prefetch items.  Then I tried it again about a week later, and it cleaned out several more, including applications that I had used regularly.  A week later I repeated the process, with the same results.  What do you think is happening?  Bug or by design?

  13. I downloaded CCleaner for Windows v4.19 on October 25, 2014 directly from the official Piriform website.

On November 6, 2014, I again downloaded CCleaner for Windows v4.19 directly from the official Piriform website.

The two zip files are different.  The executable code inside the archives is different.

Is Piriform changing the executable files without changing the version number (not a good practice), or have the Piriform servers been compromised?

I sent the above information, along with a copy of both archive files directly to Piriform, but did not receive any response.

I would like to attach the files here, but the maximum file size allowed is less than the size of the CCleaner download.
