  1. I have a 1 terabyte 'Western Digital My Book Pro II' drive and I recently started getting delayed write fail messages in Windows. I installed the included diagnostics utilities and ran a test on my drive and one of the disks failed the SMART test.

    My questions are:

Is there any way I can fix my drive or is it a lost cause?

What is the best/safest way to backup what is on there?

Should I just copy and paste all of files to a different drive or use a special program to do it?

  2. Does anyone know of any program (preferably freeware) that can monitor a setup file or installation and keep a record all files and registry changes? I found one shareware program called Total Uninstall but I'm sure there are other better alternatives out there.

  3. The new version of CCleaner 2.01.507 does not seem to be fully portable yet. The winapp.ini is still installed as a separate file in the installation directory as opposed to being embedded in the CCleaner.exe. Is there any way that I can embed it into the CCleaner.exe myself?

  4. It really shouldn't... maybe you should try uninstalling CCleaner, deleting the folder, and reinstall it. Wouldn't hurt to try.

I uninstalled and installed again and just tried the portable version that was released today. They both still have winapp.ini as a seperate file. Is there any way that I can embed it into the CCleaner.exe myself?

  5. Finally, Webroot have got around to making Window Washer work with the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera et al. I don't know about you lot, but I've been waiting for this one for ages and ages... glad I never bought the darn thing too!

You can pick it up from HERE

Is there anything this cleans that CCleaner does not? It seems to list more items.

  6. I am experiencing a bug with Recuva v1.04.104. Recuva works just fine with my other hard drives but if I choose the System Drive it will complete the scan and then suddenly disappear. I have run Recuva in debug mode to get a clue as to whats going on. Here is a selection of the output:

[iNFO ] Recuva v1.04.104[iNFO ] System Info: MS Windows XP SP2, Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 2.40GHz, 1022MB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200[ERROR] Exception: DriveNamesEnumerator.cpp(46) : The device is not ready.[iNFO ] OEM Name NTFS	[iNFO ] Searching for deleted files...[iNFO ] Read from MFT: 259344 records total[ERROR] Exception: NtfsFileRecordImpl.cpp(322) : Invalid MFT record detected[iNFO ] File record is invalid

Another unrelated issue is that when scanning my external hard drive, Recuva will freeze for a minute or two at 99% right before it displays the files.

  7. When I run the CCleaner Analysis it lists files to delete in the C:\Windows\Temp folder but when I run the Cleaner it does not remove these files/folders. I have tried to delete them myself but they seemed to be locked by Windows. I have used a tool called Unlocker which will find the program locking these files and delete them. It couldn't delete them but added them to the list of PendingFileRenameOperations in Registry to remove them on System Reboot. I have rebooted Windows and these Files/Folders are still there. I don't know how but these files seemed to be locked even before Windows starts. How can this be? Can a virus be the reason? How can I remove these files?

Here is the log of files that I can't delete:

  8. Thanks for the quick replies.

Is there any intention of adding the Timed/Shutdown Cleaning into CCleaner in the future?

TheOdds: Thanks for that explanation. It makes perfect sense.

Any reason why CCleaner only cleans the current user? Another possible feature for the future?

  9. I would first like to say that I have used to think Window Washer was the best program out there but now that I know about CCleaner I think otherwise.

I just have a few questions about CCleaner...

    1) Is there anyway to have CCleaner sit in the system tray and automatically clean at timed intervals, on browser shutdown and system shutdown?

    2) When Scanning for Issues with the Issues tool I find that it doesn't find all the issues on the first scan. I have to scan once then repair and hit scan again to find more issues that werent listed the first time. Is this a bug or is there a certain amount of issues it can list?

    3) I see that CCleaner adds a registry entry to clean the index.dat files in 3 directories. When I search for Index.dat files with another program I find there are a few more that CCleaner doesnt pickup. Is there anyway to clean those Index.dat files? Is there any reason why CCleaner doesnt pick them up?
