  1.

@oh boy could you access the XP boot menu screen again and select "Enable Boot logging".

When XP loads and reboots your computer start up Hiren's Mini XP again and look for the following file: c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt

Does it exist, can you open it and find the last few entries??

Could you tell me the file size for "ntoskrnl.exe" and "ntkrnlpa.exe" this should help determine which XP service pack is installed.

Also the hard drive in the machine is it SATA or IDE??

    Richard S.

okay, i enabled the boot logging, tried to started in normal mode once (same as always) and then started the Mini XP.

i tried the search function for "ntbtlog" and looked manually in c:\windows, but that file does not exist. i expanded the search to the whole of C: but to no avail.

i found the ntoskrnl.exe file - quite a few actually - the sizes vary between 2,132 kb and 2,141 kb

same for ntkrnlpa.exe - sizes vary between 2,011 kb and 2,021 kb

Hard drive - SATA or IDE? i don't know, how can i find out?

  2. Good idea. Oh boy, what kind of computer is it and what is the OS? Xp home, pro, what? Does it have the COA sticker with the serial number on the side or back? Don't post that number here. Also, if it is a 40 gb hard drive (think I saw that in a screenshot), you might think about getting another cause its probably old and certainly small. If you do, it would be good to get this one up and running then make an image to copy to the new one.

Unless someone knows a more efficient way. Eh?

yes it has the sticker with the serial number, it's "Windows XP Home Edition" (don't know what SP though, will figure that out soon). The computer is a "L & S Electronic" - yeah it's kinda old and i don't think it was too expensive when they bought it. But for their needs (Internet, Email, some office-programs and Free-Cell for my father) it's sufficient... i doubt they need more GB :)

i'm beginning to think that a new HDD might be the best solution...

  3. okay, i tried to run "CHKDSK C:" from X:\ but that didn't had an impact either. but it might have something to do with the warning message and it running "read only"?!?

    here's a screenshot:

oh, i think i just realized my mistake (i only entered "chkdsk.exe C:" and left out "/r"... i'll try again

  4. I am sorry if I am repeating any existing explanations that I may have overlooked whilst scrolling past so many large images.

My explanation for failure to run CHKDSK on C:\ is that you were holding C:\ captive and in use by running CMD.EXE on C:\

Had you left the command shell at X:\ then it would be reasonable to command "CHKDSK C:"

Because CMD.EXE had its feet in C:\ then neither explicit "CHKDSK C:" nor the implicit "CHKDSK" should work.

  5. That was a reminder to redhawk that those options are available on Hiren's. Several posts got put up and he might have missed it. As far as the kernel, I am not sure whether the windows kernel is loaded when you are in mini xp or not, because mini xp runs in RAM.

I'm not going to recommend anything drastic here. Go to that tools icon in the corner, and try to run "Hard Disk/Storage" then HDTune. If it runs, click on the "health" tab and see if everything says OK, Then click on the "Error Scan" tab and check the "Quick Scan" box and run it. All the squares should be green when its done.

alright... it's late again, so maybe you'll only read this tomorrow.

i'll try to answer all posts since yesterday evening. so first, i run that check, everything is "ok" and everything is green - a sign oh hope i guess... :)

alright, i'll check that tomorrow (it's late already over here). thanks!!!

  7. that didn't work. same as always.

btw, i saved screenshots of the copied files if that's important. it seemed to have stopped somewhere in the middle, then it said "Access denied" and then "101 files copied".

So is the kernel not loaded?

Just want to repeat, there is an option in Hirens Boot menu to

    1. to "Fix 'NTLDR is missing'" and

    2. to "Boot NTLDR from the hard drive" (that put me into the recovery console)

quite frankly you had me confused with this post and i wasn't really sure if you were talking to me or to Richard/Redhawk.

Kernel? NTLDR? that's already over MY head :)

  8. enter the following from the DOS Prompt (cmd.exe)

    c:

    cd\windows\system32\dllcache

If successful your screen prompt should be C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache>

the next command is (please take note of the spaces and dots)

    copy *.* ..

    exit

*.* refers to all files, the .. refers to previous directory which in this case is system32

    Richard S.

    apologies for the interruption.

if you're still there - i have entered these commands, confirmed with "All" and it now says it has copied 101 files.

What shall i do next? exit and restart?

... oh well maybe it's better to continue tomorrow... ?!

  9. It's entirely up to you oh boy, but I would.

It's a very good program, which I don't think the other guys have seen and therefore not tried. I have, as have members in the past who have fixed non booting Operating Systems by running it.

I can only repeat, it runs System Restore as easy as if you were doing it with your parents computer working normally, and it scans all important system files and replaces corrupt ones. All via a very user friendly wizard.

It can replace them as Windows won't be loaded, just the rescue CD loaded into memory.

    alright, i'll do this.

  10. The reason for your boot problem appears to be corrupted files inside system32 the dllcache folder contains backup copies which Windows normally replaces if it detects a problem.

If you copy all files from ddlcache into your system32 folder there's a very slim chance that the corrupted files could be replaced with good ones.

Unfortunately ntoskrnl.exe and ntkrnlpa.exe are not included since a kernel cannot overwrite itself while loaded

Do you know what service pack XP was running at the time??

    Richard S.

ah, no i don't know which SP was running.

concerning the copying... i'm afraid i need some more specific instruction on how to copy these files - i'm not nearly as experienced and knowledgeable as you guys

  11. In Hiren's Mini XP are you able to access "C:\System Volume Information" and a folder _restore(random charters)\rp(some numbers)\SNAPSHOT ?? (fyi they contain system restore registry snapshot files)

    Richard S.

yes, i can acces that folder - you want a screenshot?

  12. Scratch that...can't get speccy to run here, so run SIW (system information for windows) and go down to memory and see how much it says you have.

when i click on "SIW" nothing happens, i don't even get an error message.

  13. In Hiren's Mini XP are you able to access "C:\System Volume Information" and a folder _restore(random charters)\rp(some numbers)\SNAPSHOT ?? (fyi they contain system restore registry snapshot files)

    Richard S.

    i'll try that as well

  14. Am thinking...never easy for me... Good on you to work so much to fix your parent's computer. :)

I'm on here now using mini xp. Exploring the utilities menus.

Did you try to reboot the xp computer with the cd out of the drive, and it wouldn't go?

If so, restart it with the cd in go to mini xp,

and look down in the lower right corner at the little wrench icon.

click on it and then system information and then run speccy to see how much memory you have.

yeah well... i broke it, so i guess i have to fix it :)

besides - i find it kinda educational... i mean i won't get an expert through this, but some knowledge will stick.

so, yes i restarted the computer with the cd and without it, it won't boot in the regular XP either way.

When i click on Speccy i only get this:

    fotoam020923jgvqdkxro.jpg

    is this of some help?

    fotoam02092k7myo2zqiv.jpg

  15. okay, after i clicked these two messages away i went to Start->Run->CMD->C:

    fotoam01092u4zxdhi9tj.jpg

    i got this:

    fotoam01092q7evtupgwz.jpg

i said no to force dismount and then on the next question i said yes to a check with the next start

    fotoam01092kq0o5awy7t.jpg

However, that didn't happen. After i exited and rebooted again into Mini-Windows, it was exactly the same as the first time. So i went ahead and tried "chkdsk /f" (instead of "/r") as suggested by redhawk in post #30.

    fotoam01092uec36lox4f.jpg

    with the same result:

    fotoam01092n78xyectzh.jpg

so i thought i'd try the forced dismount thing:

    fotoam01092ni4kybvczt.jpg

    the result was this:

    fotoam01092bo19shmfnp.jpg

BUT (the regular) Windows XP still won't boot.

Sooo... i happen to have a few hours time right now... any immediate suggestions (aside from buying a new PC :) )

Would any other screenshots be useful? - Just tell me what to post!

  16. Hi everyone,

first, sorry for the delayed reply. After my last post i went ahead and burned the Hirens .iso file on a CD. Unfortunately i choose not to read the repeated advise from Dennis

Worth a try, just remember it must be burned as an "Image".

Alan's link has the how to, but you probably already know how to do this.

    http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/maciso

so that CD turned out to be useless. And it also turned out to be my last empty CDR, so that was that for the day. Yesterday i was away for the whole day, but managed to buy new CDR's and had access to a Windows computer, where i got to burn the Hirens CD properly with the included BurnCDCC (and Dennis' Rescue CD as well, just in case).

So, today i was able to boot into Mini Windows XP and follow Login's instructions. So far it doesn't seem to work out, but i encountered some unforseen error-messages and i might not have done what i should have been doing. I'll show you some screenshots (that i took by manouvering my mac in front of the other monitor, so sorry for the bad picture quality). Maybe you'll see right away what's wrong here.

Right after the start of Mini Windows XP i got these two messages where i just said OK and didn't do anything else:

    fotoam010927u9d5khp4b.jpg

    fotoam01092aebcxvq7r6.jpg

i'll better make a new post for the rest - TBC in a few minutes

  17. Your very first post is very scary.

You have attempted various distributions of Linux before you came here.

A Linux Live CD was suggested at post #5.

What have you been using ?

A Linux Live CD can be used without needlessly damaging Windows.

A Linux Installation DVD could destroy Windows beyond hope of repair.

I have no experience of Linux but I think Bleachbit for Linux could be the worst possible idea if you have any hope for a Windows repair

I doubt that it will give any benefit to a Linux Live CD.

yes, like i said - my parents don't seem to have the original Windows CD anymore, so before i came here i tried to install Linux Mint 11 and 10, the latest Ubuntu, the latest Fedora. Some from CD, some from USB or both. You know, just to be able to get the machine working again, if it runs on Windows or anything else is not really of major importance. But nothing worked, i never got any further then an initial installing screen and then it went black or froze.

That's why i thought that all these switched-off autostart entries prevent the computer from booting anything at all.

I tried to find something on the web about it as well... thought that maybe there is a possibility to switch some autostart-things back on in the BIOS. But to be honest that already goes beyond my usual IT-capability, so i came here.

The Puppy Linux that login123 suggested at post #5 works fine. This i have started from a USB flash-drive without installing it on the computers hard-drive. I now have access to the hard-drive and am able to open and copy files from there. Which is already more than i initially hoped for, i thought it'd all be lost.

I am also able to get online with that computer now, no problem at all (only the browser included in the puppy linux is not the most advanced).

I haven't done anything beyond that - no further installations or anything. Just downloaded the Hirens CD (as suggested in post #13), but am waiting for further instructions.
