  1. When you first launch CCleaner, the first option (Cleaner) on the left side tab bar is selected by default. This is where the "Wipe Free Space" option appears and you need to select the corresponding check box. That's what Augeas is referring to. It's the last option at the bottom of the list. After that you'll need to select "Run Cleaner" at the bottom right of your screen for it to start.

BEFORE this you must select the drives you want it to wipe, which is under Options, Settings at the bottom right of the text.

Ah, I see, thanks! I was just checking the box for drives, I didn't see the option at the bottom of the cleaner screen.

I wonder what does it do. Seems like it kinda defrags the free space.

Sometimes your system doesn't actually "delete" the files that you tell it to; wiping the free space ensures that you're using the maximum amount of free space on your drive(s). The cleaner writes a large file (or chunks) as large as the free space your computer has (the real physical free space, not what it thinks it has) and then deletes it.

  2. I don't know how to solve your problem (sorry), but I will say this, I had to reformat my computer because I somehow became infected by "virtumonde" which avast just let right in through a torrented photoshop install. AVG on the other hand gave me a warning about the install and even told be what it was infected with; I've been clean for a while subsequently.

Avast's free version seems like something they cobbled together to look altruistic - AVG's free version is on the same par with its 'pro', albeit missing a few valuable features. I'd recommend comodo firewall as well, but I had some gaming issues with it and online gaming protection programs (xtrap, gamegaurd, etc.); if that doesn't worry you then it's one of the best firewalls around.

  3. I use fire fox 3 on XP and my mother uses it on vista and we've never had any problems. It may be because my mother is a very a novice user, but if it get pasts kaspersky antivirus and the plethora of add-ons she's trawled over the years, I don't see why it shouldn't work for everyone.

None of the new features are really all that useful, and firefox didn't hog resources before (it supposedly takes up less now); I would have much preferred for them to spend their time working on a new GUI tat isn't just splicing the back/forward buttons together and dwarfing the other icons.
